Broom Swim School is a privately run family business, based in the gardens of The Grange and is run by Sallie and Alice Walters. The team at Broom always maintain the best standards of teaching and cleanliness, with organised, efficient and professional staff. Broom also has the warmest water locally, set at a balmy 31.5°C. The story of Broom Swim School starts in 1975 when Sallie’s parents, David and Gillian Burden, moved to The Grange and discovered, within it’s overgrown garden, an ornamental Victorian fish pond, complete with pondweed, fish and frogs! Having fished out all the occupants, the pond was converted into an outdoor family swimming pool. In 1986 Sallie returned from London and its office jobs to start up her own business. Having always been a very keen swimmer, competing for the Avon Neptunes in Stratford, Worcester City and various school clubs. Sallie took her ASA Preliminary Teachers Certificate at Crystal Palace, and spent the summer teaching locals, relatives and other unsuspecting people to swim in the family’s outdoor pool. The old wood sheds were converted into changing rooms, and ever eager punters had to race across the lawn, towel in hand, to plunge into the relatively warm water. Once Sallie was fully qualified as an ASA Level 2 Teacher and RLSS Lifeguard, the pool was enclosed within a wooden, log cabin style building. The official opening day was on Saturday 2nd April 1988, when more than 250 people tramped around the pool house and garden, and more importantly, booked lessons and sessions in the pool. In 2009 Sallie’s eldest daughter, Alice, started to work at the Swim School part-time as a fully qualified lifeguard. A keen and competitive swimmer herself, she swam at competition level for Stratford Sharks and school, and then qualified as an ASA Level Two Swimming Teacher. Alice’s love of sports led her to study Sport & Social Sciences at the University of Bath, and after a stint working in London for the 2012 Olympic Organising Committee, she found herself being drawn back to Warwickshire life. Alice now works full-time at the Swim School teaching and running the office with Sallie; and has become the third generation involved in the family business, alongside Sallie’s brother Angus Burden who is our Head of Maintenance. In November 2017, Broom Swim School was honoured and thrilled to be awarded “Swim School Of The Year” at the National Swim England Awards held at Birmingham University. The award means the world to us and our team, and we have dedicated this to the late David and Gillian Burden, without whom there would be no swimming in the garden at Broom.

Hal Higdon began running as a student at the University of Chicago Lab School and continued running competitively at Carleton College in Minnesota, where he won several conference championships. After school, Hal competed 8 times in the Olympic Trials, notching his best finish as 5th place at the 1960 Trials in the 3000 meter steeplechase. In the 1964 Boston Marathon, Hal placed 5th overall and was the first American finisher with his time of 2:21:55. His World Masters Championships M40 record of 9:18.6 in the steeplechase (set in 1975) remains the oldest American masters records in the books. Hal Higdon is a Contributing Editor for Runner’s World and is the magazine’s longest lasting writer, having contributed an article to RW’s second issue in 1966. He also is the author of more than three dozen books, including Marathon: The Utimate Training Guide and the recently published Hal Higdon’s Half Marathon Training. In 2003, the American Society of Journalists and Authors awarded Hal its Career Achievement Award, the highest honor given to writer members. I work closely with the NHS and other allied therapists and have my clinic in Fremington. I specialise in all massage disciplines. I can do a firm Remedial or Sports Massage and have released tension and spasms in several Olympic athletes as well as military staff and Formula One drivers. For me, massage keeps body and soul together and without that regular M.O.T to destress and release tension and pain throughout the body, I would certainly not be able to continue enjoying such a healthy lifestyle and living the dream. My clientele tends to be a variety of adults of all ages who enjoy a therapeutic treatment to improve their mobility and release aches and pains. I am also a clinical Aromatherapist and have used my oils to treat numerus conditions as well as detoxifying, uplifting and relaxing thousands of clients over the years. A non-profit association of volunteers under the banner of the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre (BAC) was formed on December 7, 1986 under the leadership of Mr. R. Neelakanta Rao Jagdale. Mr. Jagdale has taken keen interest in the activities of the Centre. In the midst of his busy schedule as an industrialist, he has acquired considerable knowledge in the science of swimming training by obtaining certification from the American Swimming coaches Association (ASCA). The association is registered as a society under the Karnataka state societies ACT 1960. The name of the association has been subsequently changed to Basavangudi Aquatic Centre. BAC - 25 Years and Beyond Since December 1986, 25 consecutive state team championship awards. 2451 medals to the Karnataka state at the National-level Swimming Competitions. 285 National records at the National-level Swimming Competitions. 123 medals to the country at International-level swimming competitions by around 120 swimmers. Over 70 medals to the Karnataka state in the National Games conducted at Poona, Bangalore, Manipur, Hyderabad and Guwahati. Three Olympic participants - Nisha Millet (2000), Rehan Poncha (2008). and Gagan Ullalmath (2012) Four Arjun Award winners - Nisha Millet, Abhijith J. Rao, Rehan Poncha, and Prasanth Karmakar Over 23 Ekalavya Award winners. Karnataka Olympic Association Award to the President, Mr. Neelakanta Rao R. Jagdale and head coach, Mr. Pradeep Kumar. Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre (BAC) is one of the few sports clubs in India, which has completed 25 glorious years and takes pride in being the first swimming organization in Karnataka, where the Public-private Partnership took place and is being executed successfully. BAC conducts "Learn to Swim” camps during the summer (April and May) and winter (October) seasons to impart basic water safety skills to the children and adults. Over 3000 swimmers aged between 6 to 12 years are taught water safety skills during these camps every year. BAC believes in tapping talented children at young age through their school programs. The Centre is associated with schools in the Basavangudi area and teaches basic swimming skills. The Centre provides well-maintained and hygienically-clean pool to the general public. The swimming pools at the Centre have been acclaimed as the best maintained swimming pools in the country.

Judo can be many different things to different people. It is a fun sport, a martial art, a discipline, a recreational sport, a means of self-defence or simply a way of life. It can be all of these and much much more. Kodokan Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujitsu. Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo. In 1964 Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games and has stayed there ever since. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or take-down an opponent, to the immobilise or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Judo is practised by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it. Judo also helps children to build their self-respect, enhances their confidence, teaches then discipline and most importantly allows them to make new friends.
