As a teenage gymnast, my weight was constantly being monitored by well-intentioned coaches and I started to develop a very unhealthy relationship with food; periods of eating very little, followed by uncontrolled binge eating. It took nearly a decade for me to completely heal my relationship with food. This long and arduous struggle is what inspired me to study clinical nutrition at Cornell University. As a dietician in a hospital setting 30+ years ago, I cared for many very sick patients who were often unwittingly sabotaging their health with their lifestyle choices. Now, thankfully, we know the monumental impact of nutrition on the prevention and reversal of chronic disease, but at the time, medical nutrition therapy was not considered an evidenced based science. lt was terribly frustrating to witness the patient disconnect with regard to their own lifestyle choices and their health. Consequently, I left the field and returned to school to study pharmacy. During my 20 years of hospital pharmacy practice, I have observed an incredible rise in the rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, and I was again feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. I really wanted and needed to put health into my practice as a healthcare professional! My final wake-up call came a couple of years ago, when two of my colleagues (very close to my age) tragically died of cancer. They were only 58 and 62. It really forced me to look at my life and ask the questions-- What really matters to me and what do I want my life to stand for? During this same period, I completed a pharmacy continuing education module in health coaching, and I knew I had found the path to fulfill my potential as a true health advocate. I then applied to one of the best programs in the country, and completed my certification in Integrative Health Coaching at Duke Integrative Medicine.

First of all, let’s clear up the name thing. My parents weren’t so cruel as to name me Kitty Kittley… I just happened to be called Kitty and fell in love with a man called Mr Kittley! I grew up on the Kent/Sussex border and went to school in Cranbrook, but after spending 20 years living and working in London, my husband Chris and I took the plunge and moved to Hawkhurst in Kent, where we now live with our two young children. In my 20s I worked as a scuba-diving instructor and then opened my own dive school and shop in London, taking people diving around the UK and abroad. Sadly, when the recession hit in 2009, I was forced to close the business. I went on to work as a court transcriber from home, which I still do on a part-time basis. However, my passion is movement, exercise and the outdoors, so I decided to retrain as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I’ve been a keen exerciser since my mid-20s but in 2008 I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, which ultimately led to me having three vertebrae fused in my lower back shortly after my son Billy was born in 2014. At the time of diagnosis, my consultant said to me, “You will be pain free if you get strong and fit.” This gave me the nudge I needed to get serious about my health and to really start taking care of my body. I am a firm believer that something good comes out of everything. Without exercise I am not quite sure where I would be. It has helped me physically and mentally a great deal and I believe that movement is one of the key elements to a happy and healthy body and that our sedentary lifestyles are to blame for many ailments. Through exercise and movement I believe that you can be stronger, healthier, banish aches and pains and be happier in yourself. I am a level 3 personal trainer and level 2 British Weight Lifting instructor based in Hawkhurst, Kent and I am qualified to work with post-natal and pregnant clients. I am also a MovNat Level 1 certified trainer. MovNat is entirely based on the practice of Natural Movement skills, i.e. movements that the human body was designed to perform. I aim to incorporate functional and natural movement into my sessions, which in turn helps with everyday life and creating a leaner, stronger and more supple body. I am also a certified Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach and can offer nutritional advice and plans. Reading

The Museum of English Rural Life is owned and managed by the University of Reading. We use our diverse and surprising collection to explore how the skills and experiences of farmers and craftspeople, past and present, can help shape our lives now and into the future. We work alongside rural people, local communities and specialist researchers to create displays and activities that engage with important debates about the future of food and the ongoing relevance of the countryside to all our lives. We were established by academics in the Department of Agriculture in 1951 to capture and record the rapidly changing countryside following World War II. The Museum is based on Redlands Road in a building originally designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse in 1880 for local businessman Alfred Palmer, of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit company. The house then became St Andrews Hall of Residence in 1911, and in 2005 a modern extension was built onto the house for the Museum. The Museum was awarded £1.8million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2014 for the redevelopment of the galleries, reopening in October 2016. The redevelopment strengthens and renews our links with agriculture as well as enhancing our position in supporting engagement opportunities for students and academics across a wide variety of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The MERL and Reading Museum are currently in a strategic partnership as part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio 2018-2022. As Museums Partnership Reading we work together to provide cultural opportunities for Reading’s young people and diverse communities, through schools, volunteering, digital engagement and exhibitions.
