Throughout the years we have been developing a collaborative network of interests and opportunities for the Romanian community living in the UK, contributing to England's multicultural milieu. We facilitate cultural exchanges between Britain and Romania, constantly aiming to improve our relationship. RCC also provides an up to date Guide containing information about Romanian institutions, organisations, businesses and services in the UK. Our Work We rely on the enthusiasm of our team of volunteers, who get involved in our programmes and help us improve invariably. Moreover, the Centre benefits from a number of voluntary British advisers on dealings with British institutions and audiences. These are friends of Romania, private or public persons from various institutions who have supported the Centre in its endeavours by encouraging us to bring new ideas to life. Besides the cultural activities implied by the name, RCC also plays an active part in the social life of the Romanian Diaspora in Britain. Our History The idea of establishing an organisation to represent Romanians in the UK dates from the '50s, when ACARDA (Asociatia Culturala a Romanilor din Anglia - The Cultural Association of the Romanians in England) was founded by Ion Ratiu and Horia Georgescu working together with various individuals, notably the ladies of the Romanian community. In 1984 the UMRL (Uniunea Mondiala a Romanilor Liberi - The World Union of Free Romanians) was launched in Geneva to unite Romanians from all over the world. Ion Ratiu was elected the first President. From that date (1984) UMRL published a monthly newspaper in Romanian and English, 'Romanul Liber' (Free Romanian), which flourished until 1997. In 1984 a British branch of UMRL was founded, along with branches in 23 other countries. Sandu Pobereznic was elected as the first British President, and succeeded by Nicolae Ratiu in 1992. The newspaper was closed and political activity sharply scaled down after the election of 1996, when it was considered that the objective of UMRL, the restoration of freedom and democracy to Romania, had largely been achieved.

Have you been to Italy and loved the fresh pasta you ate there? Would you love to keep eating that yumminess at home, but can’t find the same quality and delicious taste anywhere else? Don’t worry: you are in the right place! Ciao! I’m Silvana, a 4th generation artisan pasta maker from Naples, currently living in London. My great grandad started a pastificio in Torre Annunziata (a town next to Pompeii) back in 1893. His daughter, my beloved nonna Rosa, took over in 1927. I came in the picture a several decades later: when I was a teensy weensy 5 year old, my nonna decided I was a bit of an handful, and put me to make pasta in order to save the house from destruction! As I grew up, I also helped in the pastificio, until it sadly closed in 1995. I started teaching how to make pasta quite a few years later, in 2013, because I was frustrated by the confusion and misinformation there is around pasta, pasta making, and Italian food in general. To this day, my biggest achievements are: appearing on BBC2 as a pasta expert, publishing recipe on The Local Italy, holding pasta making demonstrations in Harrods, and being included in a roundup of best workshops in Britain by the newspaper “i.”

The goal of the library is to collect and maintain these materials in trust for future generations. Our Local History includes the political, social and economic history of County Monaghan past and present. We also host a range of Genealogy records that can assist with the study of your family history. Many of these are available online but some, such as the Local Newspaper ‘The Northern Standard’ Obituaries have been compiled in-house and are only available to view in a Co. Monaghan Branch Library. You can however view the index to these Obituaries (see link below). The FMG Project is a Brighton-based community project funded by the Friday Media Group Foundation. In 2021, The Foundation acquired and renovated the facility, formerly known as ‘The Basement’, in the heart of Brighton’s famous North Laine. Our kick-off project is a gym facility that will host our new academy programme, whilst also supporting local sports clubs and other educational groups and charities. The venue also has other facilities such as business offices and space for events, meet ups and more! Friday Media Group is a Sussex-based digital publishing business, born off the back of the success of The Friday-Ad newspaper. The Kidger family started the business back in 1975 and established the Foundation to put something back into the community from which it was born. The family are passionate about fitness, education and local business- hence the creation of The FMG Project.

Shahid is the founder, director, and main teacher of Salsa Buena and most of its classes. He began his Salsa journey in 2001 whilst living in London when persuaded to attend a local Salsa class and has since not looked back! Living in London he was fortunate enough to count some of the worlds best teachers and performers as his mentors, Super Mario, Susanna Montero, Marchant Birch, Leon Rose, Tamambo, Larisa Balogh, as well as travelling to international congresses around the world from Spain to USA learning from all the worlds best teachers . “I was so lucky to have these guys as my teachers, learning from the best of the best!”. After returning to his home town of Cardiff in 2006, Shahid found that his skills were much in demand and Salsa Buena was eventually born! Shahid teaching a Bachata Class The success of Salsa Buena has been huge, Our Classes are multi award winning, including Three Best Rated and Dance Classes of the Year – Wales Prestige Awards. Largely due to its great, fun, friendly and structured classes with very experienced and professional teachers, enabling everyone not only to enjoy their experience but to be able to achieve their full potential on the dance floor. Salsa Buena’s success extends far beyond having the most popular classes and organising the biggest events in and around Cardiff. Salsa Buena Party Event Shahid is also regularly booked to guest teach at renowned dance events and functions around the UK, and has made numerous media appearances and interviews as part of Salsa Buena on major Radio, TV, and newspaper channels as well as using his dancing/choreography/teaching skills in dance scenes when called for in TV dramas and movies. For Shahid and Salsa Buena it’s about reaching as many people as possible to enjoy the amazing positive benefits socially, mentally, physically and spiritually that dancing and learning to dance brings ALL of us.

Based in Devon and South Yorkshire, Hoarding Disorders UK – Community Interest Company was originally set up by Jo Cooke and Amanda Peet. It is now run by both Jo Cooke and Jo Cavalot. Mission Statement Hoarding Disorders UK is a not for profit Community Interest Company. Our aim is to provide practical hands-on support as well as expert advice to those affected by the varying levels of hoarding disorder, ranging from the chronically disorganised to those with extreme clutter. We support both the individuals and their families throughout this process which helps them to reconnect with each other as a family unit and the wider local community. We have a responsible and unique person-centered approach using professional decluttering, life skills and home organisational skills. We provide an ethical, sustainable and quality approach throughout our work which includes the use of our 8-step plan, support groups, coaching, research, education and training. We also work collaboratively with other professionals and organisations in contact with these individuals and families. Jo Cooke is a Director of ‘Hoarding Disorders UK – Community Interest Company’ and also runs her own business ‘Tapioca Tidy’. She is also the author of the book “Understanding Hoarding” which is fast becoming the “go to manual” for hoarders, their families and agencies that work with people exhibiting hoarding behaviours. She has appeared in the Guardian newspaper, Take a Break magazine and other publications. She has also appeared a number of times on BBC Radio and in a BBC documentary ‘Inside Out’. Jo was selected as a finalist for the Thames Valley Venus Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Jo is a professional declutterer and organiser who has a very professional, calm, non-judgemental and “makes sense” approach to helping you reclaim your space. Jo previously had a varied career in charitable organisations, human resources, project management, bookkeeping and the civil service, but realised she had a flair for decluttering and organising when she had to sell the family home that her father had lived in for more than 30 years. She has a wealth of experience and skills required when working in cluttered environments and takes a responsible and empathetic approach to the needs of people she works with. Jo runs three hoarding support groups in Bracknell, Newbury and Reading, Berkshire.

The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) was founded in 1965 by Wilfred Clark (1898 – 1981), who had been practising yoga during his service in the army in the First World War. In his civilian life, Wilfred became a journalist editing a newspaper in Sutton Coldfield. He began teaching yoga and it was this work that culminated in the founding of the Wheel. The organisation began life as The Wheel of British Yoga but this was changed in 1969 to The Western Yoga Federation, which was registered as a charity in 1973. The name was changed to The British Wheel of Yoga in 1974. During his latter years, Wilfred devoted himself to spreading the yoga message, travelling the country to present at meetings and seminars. Wilfred died in 1981 having attended many BWY Congresses. A bursary has been set up in his honour to be awarded to BWY teachers developing the teaching to support students with special needs. For more information on the bursary, click here. The first National Congress took place in Birmingham in 1967, expanding to a national two-day residential event in Walsall in 1976. The Annual Congress, or BWY Sangha as it is now called, continues today, providing the opportunity for members to meet, exchange ideas and develop their practice.

Involve parents and friends. Invite them to come and watch or join in, some may even like to purchase a kite from your school as a fund raiser. Hold your kite day on a Friday so it will encourage the children to fly with their family on the weekend. TOP TIP – Grandparents and Aunties and Uncles love it! To publicize an event such as a fete, hold your kite day two weeks earlier. Invite the local newspaper to take photos, and also mention your coming event in their story. Don’t worry about the weather. Our kites fly in everything except pouring rain and very strong winds. Some schools in Scotland held their kite day in the snow in January. Take your left over sticky tape, a hole punch and a pair of scissors when you fly so you can make quick repairs and cut out tangles and re-tie kite lines if you need to.. Have a science lesson in the week before your kite day. Kites are a feature of almost every culture, old and new, from India and China to modern kite surfing. Why not combine kites with your multicultural activities program? Practice tying knots in class the week before and set a weekend task of encouraging your children to have their family help them practice tying knots.

I’m Audrey Bodman, founder of Outshine Telephone Training & Resources, a company that was born out of my passion for supporting individuals and organisations in building strong relationships with their customers and securing more business in their market. My career began as a junior at a food and drinks company. I was tasked with selling services to customers, both new and existing, over the phone and I found that just a few well-chosen words could mean the difference between no sales and several made through up-selling or cross-selling. That success was addictive, and the next step on my journey saw me advertising sales for a regional newspaper. Here I climbed the ladder quickly and improved my team’s performance through individual coaching sessions. Those two jobs sparked a passion within me that was hard to shake off. After the birth of my gorgeous son, I joined a company as ‘job club leader’ supporting long-term unemployed individuals in getting back into the world of work. It was here that I really saw how life-changing opportunities could be generated by phone, so I decided to build my own business centered around supporting people to do just that. Outshine is built on my experience as both a practitioner and accomplished telephone skills trainer with over 29 years’ of experience.

Our passion for climbing has inspired us to develop climbing walls that enable anyone and everyone to access the sport and develop the next generation of climbers. The Climbing Academy started in Bristol in 2008 when The Mothership opened. We delivered on our vision to build a bouldering wall that would appeal to as many people as possible, giving them the opportunity to take part in what we think is the best sport in the world. Soon after, we opened The Newsroom in Glasgow – based in an old newspaper printing works – bringing the city its first dedicated bouldering centre. In more recent years we took over Undercover Rock AKA The Church, Bristol’s original roped wall in St Werburghs. In late Autumn 2018, we opened a brand new climbing centre in Glasgow. The Prop Store came to life in an old BBC prop store and offers both bouldering and roped climbing. All of our climbing walls offer the very best in climbing facilities and courses, designed for climbers of all abilities. Our staff are always on-hand to offer advice to help you get the very best out of your experience climbing.
