WELCOME TO THE CLIMBING ACADEMY Our passion for climbing has inspired us to develop climbing walls that enable anyone and everyone to access the sport and develop the next generation of climbers. The Climbing Academy started in Bristol in 2008 when The Mothership opened. We delivered on our vision to build a bouldering wall that would appeal to as many people as possible, giving them the opportunity to take part in what we think is the best sport in the world. Soon after, we opened The Newsroom in Glasgow – based in an old newspaper printing works – bringing the city its first dedicated bouldering centre. In more recent years we took over Undercover Rock AKA The Church, Bristol’s original roped wall in St Werburghs. In late Autumn 2018, we opened a brand new climbing centre in Glasgow. The Prop Store came to life in an old BBC prop store and offers both bouldering and roped climbing. All of our climbing walls offer the very best in climbing facilities and courses, designed for climbers of all abilities. Our staff are always on-hand to offer advice to help you get the very best out of your experience climbing. The Young Reporter Scheme has been running since 2008 in partnership with Newsquest Media Group. It is a quality programme, delivering lectures and teachings to help mould young people, not only into the world of the media, but also into worthwhile careers for the future. Starting with two pilot schools and a handful of students in South West London, it grew exponentially and since then we have taken thousands of students through the process. Initially, students from the two pilot schools, wrote for The Local Guardian online newspaper but as the scheme grew, we extended the range of titles and now they write for Newsquest’s range of online newspapers throughout the entire of the UK. The scheme is open to Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 and students start their ‘writing career’ uploading articles directly onto the Newsquest websites, within specified deadlines and categories. What is involved? • Students sign up for eight months writing one article per month • ALL articles are published on our online newspapers • The scheme runs from September through to April of each academic year • All those completing the scheme receive a written recommendation • At the end of the scheme, there is a chance to go forward and compete for prizes • Winners receive an undergraduate day at a London University • Top thirty-three students attend a Media Award Ceremony • One student from each age group becomes the face of Young Reporter for the next year • Students doing Duke of Edinburgh can do the scheme as one of their skills Costs There is a minimal administration charge from the school and an additional cost for each student All monies received purely cover the running costs of the scheme, supporting students and mentoring sessions, as we are totally self-funding.

I studied Sales and Marketing whilst working as a Care Worker in the Community, seeing the other side of life which most of us either avoid or deny. Later, I started a family. As my children were growing up, I decided to establish my consultancy business, consulting for a local independent newspaper, a local pallet company as well as, Admiral Commercial Cleaning, a valued client to this day. In addition, I branched out into Health and Safety Management then Management in Construction and qualified as a trainer, assessor and IQA. I continued consulting part-time for small businesses and worked in the local community piloting community projects, in mentoring. Following a successful pilot project for the Local Authority, I was “head-hunted” by the HMPS to create a mentoring scheme for “Lifer prisoners.” This project was a success, reducing re-offending in young adults by 40% across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Due to the prison closure in March 2013, the project continues in-house today. In 2015 I was awarded "Outstanding for contribution to the Business” achieving a growth of 1mm in 12 months, Leading the training provision for government contracts (SFA and ESF) with Department of Work & Pensions - Southeast, Hampshire, Isle of Wight. I continued the journey of life-long learning and completed studies in Teaching, Assessing and Internal Quality Assurance, consulting for local colleges South Downs & Havant College, Basingstoke, and Fareham. I serve on the IAP (Independent Advice Panel) for the DSPG (Defence College of Logistics, Policing and Administration). Volunteering as a committee member of the Southwick D-Day Revival - a pioneering, independent community group who focus on raising money for SSAFA.

In 2017, The Comet,, a local newspaper, issued an appeal to find a way to restore and revive Fairlands Farm - to save it from 'wrack and ruin.' It reported that the farmhouse had been registered as an Asset of Community Value. The registration had occurred when a few residents of the local neighbourhood had noticed dereliction of the site. After making enquires to Stevenage Borough Council, they sought the help of a local charity based in their area, to prevent the council from executing their undesirable plan. Leading the residents, the charity could only ensure the site's registration and, refusing to take advice, ultimately could not develop a viable proposal for the use of the farm. Although aware the farmhouse was a Grade II listed building, the group's ambitions blinded them to its implications. Efforts to sell the site had first been made around 2008 when the local council sought to raise funds for town-centre redevelopment. That is really when our story should begin, but until ghosts from the past came to guide us ten summers later that wasn't known. The town-centre scheme had barely begun when prospective investors got cold feet due to a global financial crash, but it gave time to ensure the farmhouse gained its listed status which was a local historian, Margaret Ashby had first proposed in 2004. In 2011 further attempts were made to market the farm, but with the listing now in place the was no party willing to take on the risk. By 2016, lack of investment left the house unsafe for occupation. After 25 years at the farm, the trustees of Digswell Arts Trust decided it was time to call it a day and the artists cleaned their brushes for the last time. With the property unoccupied for the first time since 1990, the council returned to its plans to sell the property to a pub or restaurant chain for the third time. Renewed determination to rid itself of the albatross around its neck, the council commissioned a condition survey to establish the extent and cost of repairs needed, but the plans failed to pass under the radar of the ever-watchful residents, and so it came to our notice. Reading about the plight of the house, Friends of Fairlands Farm recognised that an organisation dedicated to ensuring respect for the long heritage of the farm, that its place in the hearts of the people of Stevenage, would be necessary to commit to and sustain its longevity, and so the CIC was formed. We hope that the former dairy farm and arts centre will once again proudly stand central to the whole community of Stevenage and invite you to support and join Friends of Fairlands Farm on this journey. Sophie Conran is the only daughter of designer and restaurateur Sir Terence Conran and food writer Caroline Conran. Sister to fashion designer Jasper, restaurateurs Tom and Ned and product designer Sebastian, Sophie has two wonderful grown-up children. Sophie left school early and worked through a variety of different jobs including apprenticing for Stephen Jones the couture milliner, working in Jasper's fashion empire, running a supper club which evolved into a catering company, working in a small business making boxer shorts and another hand-making lollipops. She delved into the world of interior design with various show homes, private homes and retail projects. She has worked as a buyer for both The Conran Shop and The Design Museum shop and also set up her own 'corner shop of the world' Wong Singh Jones in Notting Hill. Sophie moved to Melbourne, Australia for a couple of years where she worked for clothing and homeware brand Country Road and was a contributing writer for The Age newspaper and Belle magazine, as well as having her son Felix. On her return to the UK, Sophie had her daughter Coco. While raising her young children, she collaborated with her father on several of his restaurant interiors and worked again with Jasper on colour predictions and his range with Debenhams. Sophie launched Sophie Conran Pies - a gourmet collection of top quality, handmade pies, which won 4 medals at the Great Taste Awards. She supplied racecourses with her brand Great British Pies, which led to her debut cookbook Pies, published in November 2006. This was followed by Easy Pies for Marks and Spencer and later Soups and Stews, published in 2008. Sophie has been a contributing editor for the magazines Junior, House Beautiful, In Style and Country Living. Sophie regularly writes and develops recipes for her blog, newsletters, catalogues and publications. March 2006 saw the launch of Sophie’s hugely successful range with Portmeirion. The range has won many prestigious awards and is sold worldwide, with the range continuing to expand. Sophie now works with many amazing companies creating stunning, well-known ranges. She partnered with Arthouse in 2008 to develop a range of wallpapers for B&Q and luxury design pattern books, and in 2010 she began her relationship with Burgon & Ball - creating an ever-growing range of garden tools and accessories. In the same year, Sophie joined forces with the British Cutlers to the Queen, Arthur Price, and has 2 extremely successful cutlery ranges with them.
