Beulah is an outward looking church, interested in Rhiwbina and concerned about the wider world. We describe our style of church life as liberal but lively encouraging participation in worship in which we mix traditional hymnody and new music from the world church. We encourage a thoughtful faith, questioning and exploring together what we understand the Bible and faith means today. We have adopted a range of worship patterns. Our main service is Family Worship on a Sunday morning. This gathers all ages together, there is a Junior Church catering for all ages and we have a crèche. The service lasts an hour and a quarter or so and there is coffee after the service. In addition to the service on a Sunday there is one other mid-week service. Meeting Point is primarily a gathering where we share readings for the week and pastoral news. Beulah Church affirms that Christ welcomed all into his company without exception. He did not judge who people were, though he challenged how people behaved towards each other. We believe God calls all kinds of people to work and witness in his name and we want all to feel welcome and included in all aspects of Beulah’s life and leadership. We acknowledge that we have not always lived up to Christ’s standard of warmth and welcome. But, we testify that when his Spirit is at work amongst us we are a people offering care and compassion to all-comers. In 2018 six URC congregations agreed to form The Cardiff and Penarth United Reformed Church Pastorate. The other five churches are: Bethesda URC Tongwynlais, Canton Uniting Church, City URC, Elfed Avenue United Church, and Parkminster URC. Following the URC call process we are delighted to welcome the Reverends Martha McInnes and David Dean as Ministers to the Pastorate. Welcome to our Outstanding Chinese Academic School It is our pleasure to welcome new and returning students to Hua Hsia in 2022. We hope you have all had a lovely summer! As always during these summer months, we take a step back to unwind and relax while awaiting the GCSE and Pre-U results of our students who have worked tirelessly to secure themselves top grades. The good news arrived earlier this week and we are delighted to announce this year’s cohort achieved outstanding GCSE and Pre-U results! Our GCSE group, made up of 10 students (7 in class and 3 private), achieved nine 9 grades (highest possible grade, akin to an A*) and one 8 grade. This keeps us in line with our 100% grade 8-9 track record and even gives us a 90% grade 9 achievement rate. Our Pre U group, made up of 3 students (all in class), achieved 2 Distinctions and 1 Merit. These brilliant outcomes are well deserved and are a testament to both the talent and dedication of pupils and staff, and to the quality of education maintained throughout the last two-and-a-half years even with all the speed bumps along the way. A very special thanks to Teachers Katja, Nicole, and Joseph for supporting students to unlock their full potential. The return of public exams has given the students the opportunity to clearly demonstrate the fruits of their continued hard work and focus during the challenges of the pandemic, especially in a period where nationally pupils were being warned of lower grades. Thankfully, things here have since rebounded as strongly as ever, with these pupils, and the School as a whole, able to look forward with optimism to what comes next. We look forward to seeing you all on the 10th and 11th of September, as we reopen our doors for another academic year.

Why EY Matters? My love affair with the Early Years sector began back in 2011 when I started working with Laura Henry, and through my work with her I started to connect with other Early Years Professionals. During 2013, I supported Laura with her vision of creating an organisation for the Trainers and Consultants of the sector, by organising the first meetings, the first survey and collating the results. Out of this vision NEyTCO was born. Launched in 2014 at the House of Commons, NEYTCO - National Early Years Trainers and Consultants - brought together experts in the sector to offer mutual support for trainers and consultants and a one-stop-shop for early years settings, local authorities, schools and others. In 2017, at the invitation of the CEO, Catriona Nason, I started working closely with NEyTCO, looking at the member experience, finding ways to improve the membership offering and also promoting the members and the organisation, but sadly in the current climate, NEyTCO was unable to survive and closed in October 2018. After receiving the devastating news that NEyTCO was unable to continue trading, I thought long and hard about what this would mean for the sector and then came up with the idea that the new Twitter Chat (#EYMatters) I had introduced a few weeks earlier in September could perhaps be utilised in some way to support Early Years Professionals to continue connecting, communicating and collaborating. With this in mind, I formed a new company EY Matters Ltd with the sole purpose of providing the platform to support the sense of community that has been building over the past few months between the NEyTCO Members and other individuals, companies and areas within the sector. I should stress, this is a separate venture from my main business, Virtual Support UK Ltd, where I still provide support and administration services to the sector on a Pay-per-Minute basis!

Liverpool Law Society boasts 2500 or so members in practice; it is one of the largest local Law Societies in England and Wales. Membership is broad and varies from practitioners engaged in high-value commercial work to complex charity work. The Society prides itself in being at the forefront of debate and has been able to communicate on behalf of its members their concerns in a number of areas both public and professional, and at regional and national levels. The directors meet twice a year with local MPs where there is exchange of information, news about bills going through parliament and constituent issues are raised and discussed and parliamentary questions are put down on behalf of LLS members. Separately, the directors also meet with the nominated councillors from the Liverpool City Region local authorities. This again is a useful way of ensuring our members’ concerns and issues, including those of their clients, can be raised at one of these meetings. The councillors also come to the Society with matters their constituents are facing and we work together on joint initiatives where there is a common aim. The Society also has good communication channels with The Law Society, the SRA and the LeO, where members’ issues can be raised and matters affecting the legal profession discussed. On a regional level, Liverpool Law Society is a member of the Joint V, a grouping of autonomous local law societies that meet and discuss common issues affecting membership organisations for legal professionals, sharing best practice. The members of the Joint V are Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester Law Societies. United the Joint V have a strong voice nationally, representing over 10,000 legal professionals. In addition to our representation role, Liverpool Law Society runs an extensive legal training programme with approximately 100 seminars and conferences organised every year in various specialist areas of law. This is because almost all children develop gaps in their understanding of school work which, if not promptly addressed, can grow year-on-year into more significant problems. I see many children who, had they been brought to me for tutoring at an earlier stage in their education, could have achieved so much more. Established in 2015, Arran Street East is a craft and design studio based in the markets area of Dublin city centre, where we make pottery and woven homewares to our own functional designs. We have a studio shop and we teach craft skills in Dublin and in Schull in West Cork. We use traditional crafting techniques to make and teach our craft, throwing on pottery wheels (pottery workshops), and weaving on looms and frame looms (weaving workshops). Each piece is individually made by hand using locally inspired colours and materials, and while our pottery and textiles are designed and made to mix and match, no two items are exactly the same. Our Adult Education-Night Classes programme was first launched in 1999. Since then, the number of participants enrolled in our night classes has grown dramatically, as has the number of courses on offer. The Director of Adult Education is Conor Barry. There are two terms each academic year. The Autumn Term generally commences towards the end of September, with the Spring Term getting under way towards the end of January. An extremely comprehensive and diverse range of classes are available, with over 100 exciting courses on offer each term! Courses vary from Yoga and Pilates, right through to classes on Genealogy, Cooking, Painting, Mindfulness & Meditation, Spanish, French, Italian, Calligraphy, Guitar, Gardening, First Aid, Felt making, Tai Chi, Zumba and Ballroom Dancing, to name but a few!
