SOPHIE RAE IS A MURAL ARTIST WORKING PREDOMINANTLY IN BRISTOL, LONDON + THE SOUTH WEST SPECIALISING IN BOLD, COLOURFUL, BOTANICAL, ABSTRACT DESIGNS Sophie Rae loves gliding a paintbrush across a smooth surface, transforming bland grey walls into beautiful works of art. It is truly where she gets in the flow. She loves working on walls outside and in, large scale murals as well as smaller ones. She’s painted murals in gardens, cafes, bars, restaurants, offices, schools, shop and high street facades and hoardings, to name a few. Drawing inspiration from plants (glorious plants) and enlarging, and playing with abstraction until a sweet balanced composition emerges. As well as mural painting Sophie creates beautiful prints, lovingly handcrafted, without using a press. Shapes are sketched and refined, then cut by hand with a craft knife into stencils. A roller then applies ink in the gaps. This helps give each print its irregularities. If you’re after learning from Sophie Rae she can be found sharing her unique printing technique, inspiring and igniting creativity through (fairly) regularly teaching workshops. Bauer Academy was founded by Courtnay McLeod, a news broadcaster and academic, in 2014. Courtnay had seen that traditional education was in many instances failing employers and learners. She set up the Bauer Academy inside Bauer Media, initially to create a talent pipeline for Bauer’s multi-platform media business in the UK. The Bauer Academy grew rapidly, launching partnership programmes with The Big Lottery, The Rank Foundation, the European Social Fund, and The Prince’s Trust, amongst others. The learners on these programmes are given access to Bauer Media’s experts and resources to learn practical skills like content production and creative writing, as well as all-important employability training. In 2016, The Bauer Academy was accepted on to the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers. Apprenticeship Standards can be introduced to develop and increase skills in existing employees as well as new entrants, and our team have developed a smart, flexible and collaborative delivery model that has changed the language of Apprenticeships. The Bauer Academy’s work on diversity was featured in an Ofcom report and video, and has been showcased at an event we hosted at Westminster for MPs and leaders in education. We have introduced new programming roles within Bauer Media’s radio business, that specifically targeted and hired from under-represented female groups. Westfield School is smaller than most: there are currently just over 60 learners on roll, between the ages of 2 and 19. This number varies year on year. The school dates from the early 1970's, but the buildings and grounds have undergone considerable improvement over the years, and now feature six class bases, two sensory areas, a specialist food technology room, therapy room, multi-purpose hall and sensory garden. Other facilities such as hydrotherapy and RDA are accessed via alternative providers. Our playground is divided into four distinct areas to enable different activities to take place with no effect on young people requiring ‘quiet time’. We regard playtimes as an extension of the curriculum and different activities are offered on different days, which enables learning to continue throughout leisure activities. It is a great feeling to witness four of the ECM outcomes happening every time you look out of the window: no-one has yet managed to achieve economic well-being out there!
