At the very beginning of my 20-year career in technology (in the City of London)
I used to arrive at the office at nine each morning only to be greeted by a
colleague who’d been there since seven. “Afternoon!”, were the first words I’d
hear. She probably thought that I was going to feel bad, feel guilty because I
hadn’t been in early. But what I actually thought was, “Whatever, it's not my
fault you need two hours extra to do the same amount of work as me!” I later
came to realise that she didn’t need two hours extra at all. She was in the
office early because she wanted to be seen in the office early; by her manager.
Seen as committed. She probably should have been committed…if you know what I
mean.
