Extinction Rebellion York (XR York) is part of the international environmental
pressure group Extinction Rebellion. . We use non-violent direct action and
civil disobedience to urge decision makers and leaders to act now to reduce the
impact of climate change. Our campaigns led to the City of York Council
declaring a climate emergency in 2019 and pledging to reach Net Zero by 2030. We
have 3 key demands: Tell the Truth: The government must declare a climate
emergency. Act Now: The government needs to act now to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions to Net Zero by 2025. Beyond Politics: The government should create and
be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological
justice. Our core principles include non-violence, building a regenerative
culture, challenging the toxic system we live in, breaking down power
hierarchies, and achieving climate justice.
