An essential part of the work we do involves teaching young people about themselves. Learning about the impact of our developing brains on behaviour; transforms behaviour. Talking connects our emotional non-verbal right brain with our logical verbal left brain and allows us to create an integrated brain capable of expressing need and solving problems. We have seen how empowering people to express themselves in this way has had a profoundly positive impact on their self-esteem and mental health. My practice has evolved to include a variety of media. I work with natural inks, watercolours and oils; often combining these with drawn elements, print and collage. Taking a process-led approach through open-ended drawing and painting, my own experience and understanding of nature sustains an individualistic, painterly language. Visualising formal content for abstract work, I allow elements to take their time and rely on my mind’s eye as a guide, unaware of the outcome. Studio experimentation on a range of surfaces generates a family of diverse but connected artworks. This ‘what if?’ process embraces a notion of becoming; something is caught, glimpses perhaps from a kind of reverie, half-dreamed. Often coupling the familiar with the unfamiliar, the paintings I make can be read as a string of things, as a syntax of forms. Analogous to language; the work occupies the space between word and image, voice and brush-mark, sentence and form.

Our school supports students in developing creative confidence and finding courage through a range of icon painting courses and workshops open to students at all levels. Edinburgh School of Icon Painting was founded in September 2013. It is a small school based in the artist hub St. Margaret's House. The school mission is to teach icon painting (writing) to people of all different backgrounds but at the same time maintaining the ethos and essence of it's spirituality. Introducing this unique form of art to students of the school I introduce a way of practising art which is different the other forms of art and it is said to be more then just art. Students learn egg tempera technique which has been used in art for centuries and it is one of the most lasting painting techniques. There are still reasonably well preserved icons from VI Century. Egg tempera involves preparing own paints using egg yolk and dry pigments. Through the whole process of work we try to limit synthetic materials. Using organic materials helps to develop a connection with nature and in consequence with the Divine. Basia Mindewicz - founder and teacher. Born in 1978.
