I have been working with autistic children and teenagers for 20 years. I started my teaching career in Further Education, and have worked in the Supported Learning Department of 2 large Mainstream Colleges teaching Numeracy, Literacy, Life Skills, and Childcare. I also worked as the Life Skills Coordinator at a residential college for young people with severe physical disabilities. My passion has always been working with autistic young people - I believe that they have so much to offer, and yet the education system often fails them because staff do not have the right skills and experience. This is something I am passionate about changing! I am an experienced trainer and really enjoy training others. I have a degree in Psychology, a Post Graduate Certificate in Special Education (Autism) a PCGE in Life Long Learning and hold NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship). I am also a Surrey Autism Champion and have a NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Working with Students with ADHD and a Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I am also trained to use 3Di diagnostic programming which enables me to carry out assessments for possible ASC and ADHD. Laura is an advisor to PDA North America and provides support, advice and training to families all over the world. Laura is also the founder of Healthy Happy Me! providing support to children to help them maintain happy bodies and healthy minds.

TechyTots was established at the beginning of 2017 in response to a gap in the market by mum of two Gemma Murray. Having family members working in this field and after researching the benefits of teaching children coding Gemma was keen to introduce her own children to coding and quickly realized there was nothing available in the early years to develop such skills. It was quickly apparent that there was high demand for TechyTots with lots of schools asking to run sessions and with family sessions being popular. In just over a year the level of supply and demand was so high for TechyTots, the opportunity for the business to grow was clear. TechyTots is now a national franchise providing classes from Tyneside to London. Now run by Gemma’s Cousin Julie Barber, TechyTots has gone from strength to strength. Julie has been a franchisees with TechyTots since 2018, and has a unique perspective as a business leader, she has faced the challenges of a franchisee and devolved a successful franchise with multiple classes running well in her area. Julie now has the opportunity to develop TechyTots and make sure more children are able to be part of TechyTots and learn important Coding skills. Our aim is to work on the first steps of coding with children at a young age to help prepare them for the technical world we now live in whilst making it fun. 'Coding' for those who do not already know is simply a set of instructions for a computer or device. At TechyTots we encourage children to develop early coding skills by using robots and the most advanced ‘Techy’ toys available. We also use unplugged play and activities which encourage problem solving skills, critical thinking, sequencing, early math skills and early programming, which are not only educational but lots of fun too!

Refuge In Literacy UK began when children’s author Anne Stairmand donated signed copies of her books to a local domestic violence refuge at Christmas 2020. The response was so positive she wondered if this would be the case throughout the UK, and so she spent the following January and February speaking to over 300 refuges in the UK asking whether authors donating signed copies of their books to their local refuges would make an impact. From the joy of receiving a personal gift, to the simple joy of reading, to the educational, emotional and self-improvement opportunities books can present – which in turn can create empowerment and self-esteem – it was clear these books would have an impact.
