I’m a poet, prose-poet, short story writer and journal keeper. I write regularly for enjoyment, self-exploration, and as a form of reflective practice, and I’m passionate about the link between creative expression and wellbeing. “I’ve loved stories, poems and language since I was young. I’m fascinated by the different means we all use to communicate with others, and how we strive to overcome the blocks we encounter in our attempts to hear and be heard by others.” — RACHEL GODFREY I'm also a qualified and experienced Creative Writing for Wellbeing facilitator, offering interactive courses and workshops for adults, as well as one-to-one mentoring. I create and hold a space where participants can take creative and emotional risks to express themselves on the page in short (5-25 minute) bursts of 'live' spontaneous writing (poetry, narrative, prose-poetry, autobiographical fiction, memoir, and other forms), in response to a range of prompts. Participants can choose to share their writing and/or to discuss their reflections on the writing process, knowing that anything they do share will be held supportively. I constantly marvel at the diverse pieces generated by a single prompt and a time limit, and it’s a privilege to witness people grow in confidence as they entrust themselves, their writing and their creative process to the group. I have a background in ELT / TESOL (English Language Teaching / Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and I’ve been a published author in this field for about 15 years. This work draws on my years of experience as a teacher and teacher trainer, and satisfies my deep interest in the patterns, sounds, and nuances of meaning of English.

Jenni's work incorporating a bigger sense of the abstract, self expression and a little bit of the landscape. The abstract comes from love of the outdoors, the sea, her Cornish upbringing and Jenni’s dyslexic tendencies. With being so visual I carry this with me and find a need to put it somewhere which is down in a creative way.Jenni often finishes her work with thicker heavier lines and this is a nod towards the line and text she finds so difficult to make sense of when reading. Jenni sees in pictures and finds that gathering information from her surrounding is easy to implement into her painting. The narrative here explains that colours are the confusion, often when its overwhelmingly busy and ‘noisy’. Jenni declares ‘it is often misunderstood, the amount of brain power needed to stay focused, it is exhausting, art is natural to me and defuses that struggle and expectation of something that comes easy to others, reading. At other times Jenni likes to take her work right back to her routes and her childhood experiences. Her memories in colour, source materials from trips out, family time and conversation. Often starting two or three pieces are a time, mainly works in acrylics applying oil bar drawings on top of space and colour.

When I was a teenager, I used to be called utopian, idealist, naïve. The reason? I thought that love could change people's hearts and the world. It was a naïve idea and, if you are reading this, you know things are not quite that simple. But intuitively I already knew the power of human presence for healing and transformation. It took me years to find a career path that really fitted me. Becoming a therapist was the biggest gift of my life. I started to do what I've always dreamt to do: helping people transform their lives so that they can help others and all together we can change the world. You might think I sound even more naïve than when I was a teenager. Well, I embrace my naiveté so. I believe it is possible, and I see it happening all the time in my therapy room. People tend to feel happier and discover ways in which they would like to help others, starting by helping themselves.

Project 4 Youth Empowerment (P4YE) is a Community Interest Company born by four friends who became tired of constantly speaking about issues impacting young people negatively, so they decided to do something about it. Concerned about the number of young people involved in, or on the verge of criminality, unemployed, or not in education or training, our team decided to try to change the narrative by dedicating tailored programmes for young people. We assist young people and families by offering a range of support such as group and 1:1 mentoring, online workshops, case study workshops, a weekly youth club, advocacy, and signposting to other professional services. Prevention, intervention, and diversional work is at the forefront of what we do and what we aim for with our young people. We have been trained in Conflict Resolution and mediation and work to resolve instances that can often lead to situations of serious youth violence by using our bespoke methods. Our team has many years of experience of working with young people in a variety of settings such as youth work, teaching, specialised gang work, outreach work and working with young people with special educational needs (SEN). We also have experience in leadership, project management and media and we use our skill sets when developing projects and programmes.

A recording of Alastair's live online performance during the Covid-19 crisis for the World Storytelling Cafe Alastair K. Daniel is a performance storyteller, researcher, writer and consultant in storytelling (and related fields) working in the UK and abroad. Following twelve years touring schools in the UK and the Low Countries with The Story Tent, in 2010 Alastair made the move from professional storytelling to academia. In the summer of 2022, Alastair ended his term as Principal Lecturer in Primary English at the University of Roehampton in 2022 to focus on storytelling once more, and develop his work as an independent scholar. Alastair's 'Story Tent' style brings traditional and literary texts to life through physicalisation, puppets, masks, costumes, artefacts, rhymes and songs - creating performances in which the distinction between performer and audience become blurred. The Story Tent project came out of Alastair's use of storytelling as a teaching strategy with children with profound emotional and behavioural difficulties. He found that storytelling (contrasted with story-reading) provided a unique method of drawing children, who often had difficulties with imaginative play, into new worlds. As a consultant and researcher, Alastair has worked with a range of organisations and specialises in the application of oral storytelling in educational contexts and the use of narrative analysis to evaluate educational programmes.

It’s time to look again at Let the Right One In, the Swedish film from 2008 that perhaps has something to say about 2022. It offers a distinctive take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula story which itself appeared in 1897 at a time of migrations from Eastern Europe. Dracula has proved to be a popular story in both theatre and cinema with many adaptations. 2022 is the centenary of Nosferatu, perhaps the most celebrated film adaptation. The novel Låt den rätte komma in by John Ajvide Lindqvist was published in 2004. The story is set in the early 1980s with heightened tension caused by Russian submarines tracked in Swedish waters. It is a fantasy story but Lindqvist made use of some of his own experiences as a young teenager in developing the narrative. The film adaptation in 2008, directed by Tomas Alfredson, presents an almost social realist Stockholm suburb with a new resident, a girl of 12 named Eli, moving in next door to Oskar, an introverted boy of the same age. The 2008 film became an international hit, celebrated by popular audiences and critics alike and generating a Hollywood remake (not so successful) and several stage adaptations. Tagged a ‘romantic horror’, the film raises questions about ethnicity, gender and migration. There will be plenty to discuss. Let the Right One In is available on BBC iPlayer for the next two months. Delivered by leading charities tackling youth violence, Catch22 and Redthread, The Social Switch Project is switching the narrative on how social media’s relationship to youth violence is understood, tackled and solved. How the project was formed The Social Switch Project launched when Google.org was seeking a way to tackle the growing issue of antisocial and violent online behaviour, which often leads to violence offline. Where antisocial behaviour was once mostly limited to a physical audience, harmful content is now rapidly shared online, resulting in retaliation and feeding gang violence. This programme contributes to the public health approach to tackling youth violence. Utilising funding from the corporate sector, Catch22 and Redthread are able to offer these learning opportunities for London’s young people and professionals. Who is involved? Initially funded by Google.org, two of London’s leading charities Catch22 and Redthread, launched the pilot project in 2019. Catch22’s extensive research in the area and frontline experience of reducing violence, is combined with Redthread’s expertise in delivering youth violence interventions. Google.org encouraged both partners to use their knowledge to create an exemplary pilot project.  The Mayor of London’s Violence Reduction Unit is now supporting the next phase of the project to build our impact and shape its future development. The Social Switch Project has a large advisory board, with representatives from across the sector, police, and academics. We’re already working with key players, including Google, Facebook, TikTok, City Hall, the Metropolitan Police, and The Children’s Society.
