Dr Anita Shaw Dr Anita Shaw has over 23 years experience of supporting teachers in interactive science teaching, starting at the Science Museum in London, and more recently at Techniquest Science Discovery Centre in Cardiff where she was responsible for the centre’s education strategy. She started her career as a research scientist, initially in neurosciences and latterly in medical genetics. Anita is passionate about engaging young people, particularly girls, in STEM. She currently sits on the Welsh Government’s Women in STEM Board and chairs it Education subgroup. She runs the Welsh Valleys Engineering Project for the Royal Academy of Engineering, is a coach for the Institute of Physics Improving Gender Balance project and a trustee at Chwarae Teg. She is excited about the career opportunities in STEM for young people and believes that, alongside parents, primary school teachers have a central role in nurturing children’s natural curiosity.

For every event and and everyday! Sally showed for two seasons at London Fashion Week in her own catwalk show, and her work and inspirations are featured in four books. She is also featured in the main film in the 'Fashion and Style' gallery at the National Museums of Scotland, and created a headpiece which was shown in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery as part of the stunning 'Beauty By Design' exhibition. She is a V&A Dundee Design Champion. Her hats have graced the heads several members of the Royal Family including HRH The Duchess of Cambridge; HRH Princess Beatrice; HRH Princess Eugenie; Zara Tindall; and Autumn Phillips, and other clients include First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins, and broadcasters Edith Bowman; Charlotte Hawkins and Francesca Cumani. She also creates headwear for opera, ballet, and theatre companies, television, and film. Each piece is designed and made with great attention to detail and finish. She is Scottish Opera's milliner making hats for over 30 of their productions, and other clients include The BBC, Scottish Ballet, The Royal Lyceum Theatre, and Netflix including a hat worn by leading lady Brooke Shields in 'A Castle for Christmas'. After her BA Hons degree in jewellery, Sally dallied a while in paper conservation and museum sculpture, before nurturing her passion for hats and accessories with comprehensive millinery training in London. Amongst others, she has trained under the late Queen Mother's milliner and with The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. She was one of 100 top British design business selected to exhibit at 'UK Now' in Australia, and also exhibited at the prestigious Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show.

the exchange

The Exchange is a unique community-owned cultural/social organisation, empowering local people to make & make things happen. Founded by local residents in 2017 with just £5, The Exchange is housed in the old Carnegie Library in Erith, Bexley. Erith’s recent history hasn’t been easy; it has long been neglected and, as a result, is perceived (unfairly) by many as unwelcoming and not somewhere people have wanted to visit. The Exchange, however, is inspired by a brighter history; one of industry, community endeavour, thriving high streets, & port-town inclusion that welcomed transient groups & visitors from afar. We have so far raised over £3.6m to repair the town’s most significant building, turning this once derelict space back into a community hub with a year-round programme of workshops & events. Previously a library and museum, that was commissioned, designed and built by local people, we are creating a space that celebrates and restores local craft, and empowers people to make the change they want to see on their doorstep.

About SEAS SEAS (Socially Engaged Art Salon) is an award winning artists' led organization that promotes socially engaged art practices and artists from underrepresented sectors and works with marginalized communities through exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events. It also offers an artists’ support programme and residencies. SEAS' programme takes place at Black and Minorities Ethnic Community Partnership (BMECP) Centre, The Ledward Centre (TLC) the up and coming Brighton's LTBTQAI+ centre, and at the Jubilee Library. SEAS is the South East hub of the Social Art Network (SAN) and we often collaborate with invited curators, art institutes, charities and community organisations. Founded by Dr Gil Mualem-Doron in 2016, and supported by Art Council England and Brighton&Hove City Council, SEAS is a beacon for socially and politically engaged art in Brighton and south-East England. SEAS is the South-East hub for the Social Art Network (UK) and it has collaborated with organisations such as Platforma Arts+Refugees, Sanctuary on Sea, Brighton Museum, Brighton Pride, Brighton Photo Fringe, Photoworks, Blast Theory, Esmée Fairbairn, and the Coram Foundation. Since 2018 SEAS has been supported by the Art Council England and Brighton & Hove Council.

I first took up silk painting at the 2001 Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace, when the Fabric Colour Workshop were doing taster sessions. I went with curiosity, and came home with a large frame, some silk, a brush and a box of little bottles of paint! Since then, I have completed my City and Guilds qualification in creative textiles (silk painting), and the "Access to Art & Design" Diploma at the University for Creative Arts in Farnham. I enjoy teaching silk painting and helping each student to achieve their potential. I have written tutorials on aspects of silk painting for Crafts Beautiful Magazine and Creative Crafting Magazine, and contributed three projects to "Craft", which was published by Dorling Kindersley. I appeared (briefly!) on Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution (BBC2), and was interviewed by the Victoria & Albert Museum as part of a project on traditional crafts. I have run silk painting workshops for many local organisations including Watts Gallery, The Lightbox, The West End Centre in Aldershot, Amberley Museum, Woking College, NADFAS, The Embroiderers' Guild, the Guild of Weavers Spinners & Dyers, and the WI. I have also run introductory evening workshops for a number of local businesses, and many private parties. I have also been working in fused glass and ceramics since 2009, and have my own home workshop. I have been on a number of courses at Glasszoo, UCA Farnham, Warm Glass and The Glass Hub, and have also attended workshops at the International Festival of Glass. I have been featured in the Glass Beadmakers UK Magazine and Journal. I am a member of the Guild of Silk Painters. I set up their Surrey Branch in 2005. I have also spent time on the Guild of Silk Painters Executive Committee as their Vice Chairman and, more recently, as their Publicity Officer. My silk painting courses are also listed on craftcourses.com. I produce a range of hand made accessories and homewares from hand painted silk and fused glass, suitable for all occasions. Park Pharmacy Trust, a registered Educational Charity, has since its inception in 1984 been working closely with Plymouth City Council for the wider benefits of the local community. It has received National recognition for both its innovative approaches to life-long learning and as a tourist attraction for visitors to Plymouth. Its famous C J Park Pharmacy, the last remaining Victorian chemist's shop in Plymouth, established in 1864, had been a major tourist attraction in the Merchant's House Museum where it was manned by trust volunteers. There thousands of visitors could see the pharmacy, try their hand at old fashioned pill-rolling (and earn a certificate of proficiency in the art of pill rolling) and talk to the volunteer stewards on duty. A weekend event held at the Merchant's House Museum Pharmacy is Phun, attracted record numbers of visitors. The pharmacy was televised Nationally to over 8 million viewers when Park Pharmacy Trust became the joint United Kingdom winner in the Tourism and Heritage categories of the BBC's ''It's My City!'' competition. In fact, Plymouth, because of Park Pharmacy Trust, became the only winning city in the south of England. The C J Park pharmacy display is currently in store and the Merchant’s House is closed following extensive repairs to the structure of the building. Park Pharmacy Trust has ambitious plans to develop a major tourist attraction: Plymouth Heritage Health Science Exploratory (THE EXPLORATORY) in which the C J Park pharmacy display will be rebuilt. This is the way the pharmacy purchased by Mr Charles Park in 1875, looked in 1864. It was then at no. 1 Mutley plain. It is thought that Mr Park moved the pharmacy to number 23 Mutley Plain around 1879. The original shop had four carboys (big glass bottles) in the window whereas at 23 Mutley Plain there was only room for three carboys. The fourth carboy was found in the hayloft and is in the collection of Park Pharmacy Trust and will be included in the C J Park display in the Plymouth Health Science Exploratory. . Mr Charles Park (third from right) with his staff around 1910 and the delivery boy on the left, who worked for the Park family for 40 years was known as ‘Park’s Express’.

Giulia Manzoni is a Master Mosaicist who designs and makes bespoke mosaics for residential, artistic and architectural commissions in her central London studio. Classically trained at the renowned Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, Italy, Giulia has spent the last 10 years refining her craft working on projects between London and San Francisco. Using centuries-old techniques, Giulia’s work reflects the rich tradition of this ancient art form. Her studio practice spans a breadth of applications, from traditional mosaics for domestic and commercial settings to contemporary works of art for private commissions. Giulia specialises in recreating historically accurate mosaics for walls and flooring. Selecting the finest Italian marbles, her designs are sensitive to a building’s architectural heritage. Notable projects include Victorian marble flooring for a private Kensington townhouse, an entrance sign for Restaurant Vermuteria designed with a nod to the grand cafés of 18th century Europe, and a collaborative restoration project for the gallery floor of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Underpinned by the same rigorous training, Giulia takes a more free form approach for her art commissions. Applying the individual tesserae directly to a surface, she gradually builds texture and colour to create works of art with a three-dimensional quality, using a range of traditional materials and found objects. She has applied her artistic flair to a range of private commissions, from tables and picture screens to a large-scale abstract artwork based on the paintings of Sam Francis. Giulia established her eponymous mosaics studio at Cockpit Arts in Holborn. Where she offers her mosaic services and runs courses in mosaic techniques.

Ms. Iwanaga spent four and a half years of her childhood in the United Kingdom. During that time, she was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Hammersmith, London. Upon graduation from Seishin Joshi-Daigaku (University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo) in 1971 (BA in English), she returned to the UK. From 1971-1973, she helped to set up Rikkyo School in England and worked as an administrator. In September 1973, she joined HTS Management Holdings Ltd and started the Euro-Japanese Exchange Foundation (now EJEF). From 1985 to 1991, Ms. Iwanaga worked as the Appeal Organiser for the British Museum Japanese Gallery Appeal. With the help of the Keidanren and various industrialists, the Appeal was a great success, with most of the target amount of five million pounds sterling being raised in Japan. Ms. Iwanaga was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for this achievement. She was also awarded a Foreign Minister’s Commendation in 2014 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays from the Japanese Emperor in 2018.

Stephen Shiell and Hannah White are artist duo Blanc Sceol. Their compositions, interventions and performances express their experience of place, anchored in what is found in a landscape but re-imagined into new territories. They create encounters to connect both materially and energetically to their surroundings. They are certified Deep Listening® practitioners and regularly run workshops and sound walks exploring listening and sound making in public spaces. They have worked with a variety of and experimental platforms such as Anti-university, Fort Process, We’re All Bats, MIA festival and Art’s Birthday and cultural institutions such as Ashmolean Museum, The Royal Academy, Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe and Oxford Contemporary Music. In 2018 they established Surge Cooperative, a collaborative effort to benevolently occupy the Channelsea river in London. Their research seeks to live with, listen with and act with this vital living system, finding new ways to tackle problems of neglect and misuse whilst navigating ancient acts of parliament and institutional backwaters to fight for the protection of this waterway.

farnham maltings is a cultural organisation based in south west surrey with a regional, national and international reach Farnham Maltings is many things. For over fifty years we have operated as an arts and cultural centre presenting a programme of performance and participation work which contributes to the town’s quality of life. Over the past ten years we have also cared for the Museum of Farnham. We make our own theatre, mostly for rural communities, as well as producing and investing in a cohort of the region’s leading theatre companies. Our ambition in leading the ‘house’ network of 180 arts centres and theatres is to ensure that the southeast of England thrives as a set of creative communities. Through, ‘caravan’ we present the best theatre being made in England to an international audience with the ambition to develop reciprocity and exchange between artists and producers across the world. As an organisation we are curious about how to encourage generosity, build on Farnham’s reputation for crafts and meet the challenges facing towns across our region.
