A dynamic and physically challenging practice consisting of six series of postures (asanas) to be learnt and followed in sequential order. The first, Primary Series, (‘Yoga Chikitsa’, or ‘yoga therapy’) realigns, detoxifies, and stabilizes the body, purifying muscles and organs, and building strength, stamina and flexibility. The second, Intermediate Series (‘nadi shodana’ or ‘nerve cleansing’) works on the subtle body, purifying and strengthening the nervous system. The remaining four or Advanced Series (‘Sthira Bhaga’ or ‘divine stability’) require even deeper levels of strength, concentration and humility. Whichever series you are practising, you will always start with the same set of ‘sun salutations’(surya namaskar) and end with the same sequence of finishing postures. Each posture builds on what has been learnt before. The student must not race ahead and try to do too much too soon, as each level is a preparation for the next, and must be fully developed before moving on. It takes time for the body and mind to strengthen and stabilise, and many years of practice. Moving on before you’re ready could result in injury.

Thistle Aikikai is a member of the Scottish and Borders Birankai under the technical direction of T.K Chiba Shihan. The Chief Instructor, Michael Flynn Shihan began his study of Aikido in 1982 at San Diego Aikikai under the direction of Shihan TK Chiba. He was named Shihan in June of 2005 and was awarded 7th Dan by Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru on 14 January 2018 during the Kagami Baraki celebration at Hombu Dojo. He was formally awarded his Shihan Certificate in a ceremony at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in November 2006 by the second Doshu, Ueshiba Moriteru. He has also received Iaido Shihan title from Mitsuzuka Sensei. Since arriving in Scotland, Flynn Sensei has established the Thistle Aikikai. He serves as the Chairman and Technical Director of Scottish and Borders Birankai. Thisle Aikikai offers beginner through to advanced classes in Aikido and weapons. All are welcome. Instruction in Iaido , the art of drawing the sword and striking a killing blow, is also offered at Thistle Aikikai. In Iaido, students learn to use the sword not merely as a tool for cutting down one’s enemy, but as a method of allowing the mind and body to become more harmonious with nature. During training, students will learn the forms of the Muso Shinden Ryu Iai as developed by Nakayama Hakudo Sensei, with a goal toward synchronizing their breathing and body motions within the techniques in order to understand and practice the efficient use of the body. Tuesday Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow classes are held at 'autonomous room east' in Dennistoun, Glasgow. A generously sized lounge in an old merchant villa provides a beautiful, unique and calming backdrop for a varying Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow! Sessions are designed to improve strength and flexibility, focus the mind and more importantly, bring a smile to your face! Expect to perfect sun salutations, alignment of core standing and seated postures, as well as exploring peak poses and a juicy savasana! A community based class welcoming all ages and levels. For now, 8 spaces are available so ensure everyone has enough comfortable space around their mat. Class booking + attendance is £7 and can be paid in person or via PayPal with this booking, subject to booking fee. Leading building and construction specialist, The JR Group, has launched a new scaffold inspection service as part of its new training services division. The service will provide a thorough seven-day scaffolding inspection in accordance with the Working at Height Regulations, 2005. The launch from the firm, which has more than 25 years of expertise in the field, meets massive demand from the sector, offering a fully compliant service to comply with SG4. As well as mandatory weekly scaffold inspections, the team will also provide one off inspections, independent scaffold inspections, Anchor Tie Pull Out Testing, PASMA aluminium tower inspections, advanced design structure inspections and incident and accident investigations. Expert advice on access solutions will also be on offer. All audits and inspection reports will provide detailed information regarding remedial works required within an appropriate timescale, complete with photographs. Ronnie Charters, HSEQ Manager for JR Scaffold will be leading with the new inspection service. He has more 30 years’ experience within the scaffold industry and is the current regional chair for Scotland / Northern Ireland for NASC. As the NCC / CITB access instructor / safety advisor for all National Construction colleges throughout the UK, Ronnie has been carrying out safety site audits and scaffolding weekly inspections for various clients throughout the UK and abroad for more than 20 years. Ronnie Charters, HSEQ Manager, said: “We are very excited to be able to offer this invaluable service to the industry considering the current high demand, and at the same time satisfying the shortage of accredited, competent personnel available to carry out this type of work. “The demand for this type of service is massive as there is a conflict of interest once a company erects a structure and carries out its own scaffold inspections. Introducing an impartial company to carry out audits and inspections provides peace of mind for all involved. “By using a service like this, it will ensure that all scaffold structures meet appropriate safety standards before first use, and they will be inspected at intervals of no more than the seven days until it is dismantled. It will inspect structures after extreme weather conditions, high winds or any other events likely to affect its strength or stability, as well as after any substantial additions or alterations or after any unauthorised or third-party interference. “We look forward to rolling this service out, providing much-needed support to the sector.” The JR Group employs around 200 staff and was founded in Govan in 1995. It started as a scaffolding business and is now one of the largest building and construction firms in Scotland. The business operates throughout Scotland and Northern England working on behalf of a number of the UK’s leading housebuilders, registered social landlords and private clients.
