Samantha Valand

samantha valand

My interest in wellbeing and weight loss was sparked in my early 30s when maintaining my weight was suddenly not quite as easy as it was in my 20s. Around the same time close family members were prescribed drugs for high blood pressure and cholesterol problems. I became interested in the concept of ‘eating yourself healthy’ and how lifestyle impacts a person’s health. This curiosity has never left and has evolved to include how we are choosing to age as we get older. #agingwithattitude In 2006 I trained as Pilates teacher and Personal Trainer, leaving the world of IT behind. While most of my clients successfully lost weight – usually men, a number did not – usually women. This was despite the women following exercise programmes and restricting their calorie intake. The “Eat Less and Exercise More” mantra was not working for everyone. I decided to determine the underlying cause by undertaking further training and research. I trained to become a Metabolic Effect Nutrition Consultant. This training is provided by a US company which combines holistic Medical Doctors and Personal Training qualifications. This course covered hormones and how they impacted the body and weight loss, for women in particular. Menofitness Training from Australia was next. It was a course about the Menopause and the health and fitness aspects for women as they get older. You can find a list of my qualifications here This combination of years of experience and courses has become my first book The Menopause Diaries I wrote it because I struggled to find any practical information on how to adapt to the changes that comes with the menopause. I cannot be the only person that is finding this challenge. Hopefully my book will help other women be as healthy as they can at this time in their life. coffe and cake I enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like coffee and cake at the weekend and rediscovered the joys of reading novels after purchasing a Kindle a few years ago. You can find some of my favourite health books here. While I don’t sit up reading in bed with a torch anymore (need to balance hormones with a good nights sleep!) I still enjoy a good book. Europe is one of my favourite destinations where I enjoy taking life a bit slower while enjoying good food and wine.

The Yoga Village

the yoga village

Nottingham

At the Yoga Village our ethos is inclusive and independent. There need be no barriers to practising yoga and so our classes welcome everyone, young and old, people with medical conditions, people who have practised yoga for years and people who are completely new to it. The Yoga Village began when we – a couple of yoga teachers – moved to Nottingham in 2005. We are now known throughout the city for our wide-ranging antenatal and family-centred yoga classes, which includes pregnancy yoga, birth workshops, postnatal classes, parent and toddler groups, kids’ yoga and mini retreats for mums. We love and value these classes immensely and believe that they are able to provide deep support for women and men through the intensity of early years’ parenting. We’re delighted that hundreds of friendships have been born out of these classes. We are also experienced and highly qualified teachers of general yoga classes for adults. We started out as general yoga teachers and have taught for two decades. Our style of yoga is essentially restorative and meditative with a focus also on physical practice and health. This style and training is the underpinning of all our classes and in particular gives us the tools to work with a broad range of students. We have run specialist classes for people who have suffered strokes, for prisoners, for people with ME, MS, addiction and more. Our general classes are for anyone interested in a style of yoga that is relaxing and holistic. The somatic (body) awareness practised can lead to a transforming relationship with our bodies which can gradually free us from old patterns (physical and mental) leading to more resilience (eg from the effects of stress) and improved mental and physical well-being. As teachers we’ve been fortunate enough to spend over twenty years training with a much loved senior teacher and in ashrams. When we started teaching, yoga wasn’t the big business it is today – with quick teacher-training courses and multiple franchises. We have been blessed to experience and value depth of training, long term commitment and a sense of integrity which honours the subject of yoga. Yoga means union: this can be union with ourselves, with our friends and family, and with our community and planet. Simple yoga techniques can help us live a healthier life that is more balanced and harmonious.

The Carter And George Academy

the carter and george academy

London

Our co-founders, Jamie George and Rhys Carter, established The Carter & George Practice with the vision of making elite medical treatments (usually reserved for high-level athletes) accessible to everyone. The synergy of Rhys’ professional and experienced physiotherapy background, with Jamie’s unique understanding as a professional rugby player, allows The Carter & George Practice to provide a uniquely well-rounded service to all our patients. The Carter & George Practice consists of a team of highly qualified professionals with specialist knowledge, spanning a diverse range of conditions and treatments. Our team works collaboratively to treat our patients with a balanced approach that is usually reserved for professional athletes. OUR COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO PHYSIOTHERAPY: WHAT WE DO A RAPID INITIAL APPOINTMENT THAT ELIMINATES UNCERTAINTY: We recognise the toll that pain and uncertainty can cause for our patients, which is why we guarantee an appointment within 48 hours of contacting us. From our very first meeting, you’ll be able to walk away with an accurate diagnosis and peace of mind; facilitated by a physiotherapy treatment plan and prediction of your recovery time. LONG-TERM RESULTS FOR INJURY REHABILITATION AND CHRONIC CONDITIONS: Our professional physiotherapy clinic uses manual physiotherapy techniques (hands-on) to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of injuries, muscle spasms, and short-term challenges. However, we also offer specialist clinics for longer term conditions such as arthritis, improving the function of painful joints, and reducing your reliance on medications. PREVENTION AND STRENGTHENING: With our unique implementation of Strength & Conditioning, Gait Analysis and PNOE Metabolic Assessments, we give all of our patients access to data to train like an athlete while preventing injury, determining your unique biomechanics while walking, running, and standing – and establishing any physical limiters we can improve. This allows us to detect and treat issues before they become injuries. However, in the event of an injury, our expert team of physiotherapists and strength and conditioning coaches are on hand to diagnose, formulate a physiotherapy treatment plan, and prevent their recurrence. OVERALL HEALTH AND TRANSFORMATION: We offer more than physiotherapy and strength and conditioning: Our range of services promotes holistic health and comfort in your body. Our other services include health testing packages, bespoke orthotics, along with transformation programmes and memberships – for those who truly want to take control of their health. Our staff have broad experience working with a range of patients, from professional athletes to the elderly, and we have verified reviews and outstanding results. If there is something we cannot do for you, our close network of regional experts will be able to help.

Dharma-Zen Tai Chi Studio

dharma-zen tai chi studio

Tai Chi can help improve the balance and help reduce the risk of falling. In comparison to other exercises, including weight training, stretching, endurance training, and balance training, Tai Chi was the most beneficial exercise, reducing falls … ( The Journal of the American Medical Association , May 3, 1995, Vol 273, No 17, pp 1341 – 1347). Danny Lai is from Taichung, Taiwan. There, he learned many different kinds of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Hsing-Yi, Ba Gua, Tae Kwon Do and Shaolin. Tai Chi Punch Although each style of Tai Chi Chuan has its peculiar features, the five styles of Tai Chi Chuan something in common, they are: With a calm mind the performer breathes naturally. In peace and ease the performer moves lightly, softly, slowly and equally. The performer moves harmoniously and in a balanced way. The performer moves like a circle–graceful and perfect. The motion is slow and steady and strong strength (yang) and weak strength (yin) can be used in motions mutually. Tai Chi Chuan has attracted attention internationally. It has special functions in promoting health and preventing illness. To help the performer to concentrate their mind and to make their motions coordinate with their breath, music can be played to accompany practice. Flow with the sound of the musical instruments. In following the rhythms of the music, practicing Tai Chi Chuan will relieve stress and benefit health. Crescent Kick (Shuang Pai Chiao) The name Tai Chi comes from the Taoist symbol the West calls yin (black) and yang (white). This Tai Chi symbol represents two balanced opposites: black and white, sky and earth, fire and water, masculine and feminine, moon and sun. Feminine is the black or yin. Masculine is light or yang. The yin side of Tai Chi is like yoga, moving meditation, or chi kung. The yang side is the martial art – the practical application of the movements – using your power. Most often the yang side of Tai Chi is not taught. The healing benefits without the martial application is the yin without the yang. Through the movements of Tai Chi, one can set the mind and body in balance. It is not easy to do. You want to make sure that for every movement in motion (yang) or at rest (yin) your body is moving together. Through Tai Chi training, you can learn more about yourself and you can feel calm and peaceful all the time. It is a kind of martial art, but it is a gentle martial art. It is not for attacking, but has powerful self-defense applications.
