The Richmond Training Hub supports multi-professional primary and community care workforce development and transformation. Funded primarily via Health Education England (HEE) we do this by co-ordinating training as well as undertaking various pilots and initiatives helping facilitate new ways of working. For example supporting primary care placements for student nurses, pharmacists and other non-medical learners. Additionally the Training Hub is committed to promoting and supporting apprenticeships throughout the health and social care. A key objective across all work-streams is the requirement to boost capacity and capability in primary and community care to enable more care to take place at home and out of hospital. The Foundation University Islamabad (FUI), a project of Fauji Foundation, was established under a Federal Charter in October 2002. The University has been rated as category 'W4' (the highest rating category) by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. The academic programmes offered by FUI are duly accredited by Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC), Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), National Business Education Accreditation Council (NBEAC), National Technology Council (NTC) and Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC). As a higher education institute (HEI), FUI, on priority, establishes linkages with other HEIs at national as well as international levels, local community and corporate sector, especially Fauji Foundation industries. FUI has signed number of MoUs with various local and foreign organizations including universities, industries, both public and private. We are regularly pursuing these deeds in order to establish a vibrant knowledge economy for the benefit of students, faculty and alumni. Penelope Ody BSc MNIMH Penelope Ody is a Member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and Fellow of the Herb Society. Hello – and welcome to "Herbs at Walnut", a series of one-day courses on using herbs now in its twentieth year. I have been exploring the fascinating world of herbs for more than 40 years studying initially with the School of Phytotherapy in Kent, UK, and also at the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangzhou, China. I practised as a consultant medical herbalist in Buckinghamshire UK, for 11 years while also writing regularly about herbs and editing The Herb Society's various journals from 1988-1994. For the past 20 years I have concentrated on writing books about herbs and lecturing at various courses and summer schools - including Herbs at Walnut which I started in 2002 at my home, Walnut Cottage, in Hampshire. In 2006 these courses were featured in Meridian TV's "Country Lives" series. For most of us, herbs are familiar and readily available plants used for flavouring foods or scenting rooms. Many of them are also potent medicines ideal for using at home as alternatives to over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs for treating a range of health problems. Our great-grandmothers would have been very familiar with home-made medicines but over the decades we have lost the everyday skill of making them. Commercially produced medicines – both orthodox and herbal – have been readily available to meet our needs. Now, thanks to changing legislation and tighter regulatory control, many of these herbal products are no longer available from chemists or health food shops, so we need to re-learn how to make these simple nostrums and to understand which are most suitable and when to use them. Courses at Walnut Cottage cover a range of herbal topics – from using herbs in cooking to making your own creams and ointments to replace those which are no longer quite so easy to find in the shops. Courses are relaxed and informal with small groups – generally no more than six – giving plenty of flexibility to explore your particular interests. In 2008, our hospital founder Shailen Jasani, a Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care specialist, helped to treat an adorable rescue cat called Ralph, after he had been hit by a car. They went on to share a home together for two years before Ralph sadly passed away in 2010. In 2014, when Shailen embarked on his journey to set up a new and very special veterinary referral centre, it felt only right that as a lasting tribute to the wonderful Ralph, the hospital be named in his honour. It officially began for us in 1918 after our volunteers, who were recruited into the 130th Field Ambulance, returned from France where they’d helped treat soldiers on the battlefields of the First World War. It was the hard work and dedication of those volunteers, at home and overseas, that earned Wales it’s very own St John Priory, based in Cardiff. After the war, our volunteers continued to provide first aid treatment in Cardiff and the surrounding valleys, including taking care of the war wounded and rehabilitation of returning St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers. Since then we've been there for people through some of the country’s highs and lows, from providing support at the Aberfan disaster, to being pitch-side as Wales won Grand Slams. As the need for first aid developed, so did we. The organisation set up the first Ambulance Service for Wales and in 1974 we were the first organisation to take first aid treatments and emergency response into the heart of communities, by introducing mobile treatment units - something we still do today. The tradition of delivering first aid hasn’t wavered, and while our 4,000 volunteers are no longer needed on the battlefield, they support at a different type of field – the sporting field. As proud medical cover providers for the Principality Stadium, we help keep the public safe during events – including the world’s biggest sporting event; the Champions League Finals when they came to Cardiff in 2017. A nation of lifesavers St John Ambulance Cymru believe everyone should learn basic first aid skills. Since the beginning we've trained people in first aid at work and in communities. Accessibility to first aid training was improved after we made the Preliminary Course in First Aid and Nursing available in Welsh, and in 1923 the organisation set up the first Cadet Brigade in Wales, meaning for the first time, children and young people in Wales had the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills. St John Ambulance Cymru Badger and Cadet Youth Programmes are now a staple of our work, teaching those aged 5-17 how to save a life and providing the perfect springboard for our healthcare professionals of the future. Today, we're proud to train over 30,000 people in first aid skills every year. Training everyone from school children to multi-million pound businesses, and working towards a Wales where no one dies because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.
