In 2016, Brunel celebrated 50 years as a university. However, our history can be traced back much further to 1798 through our predecessor colleges of Borough Road College, Maria Grey College, Shoreditch College and the West London Institute of Higher Education and as well as through Acton Technical College then Brunel College. Our rise since 1966 has been impressive and our reputation grows year on year. Now a university of 12,746 students – 3,309 students engaged in postgraduate and research study – our special approach is to combine academic rigour with the practical, entrepreneurial and imaginative approach pioneered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The decision to be named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel was taken after much discussion. Rather than name the new College after a location, Dr Topping, the first Vice Chancellor of Brunel University (and former Principal of Brunel College) pleaded that the name should be a well-known person preferably an engineer or scientist associated in some way with Middlesex or Acton. Agreement was reached in March 1957 that person would be Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) is one of the great British engineers of the 19th century. Isambard was born into an industrious family in 1806, with his mother Sophia Kingdom working for the Royal Navy and father Marc Brunel being a prominent French engineer. Isambard took on formal training as an engineer and went on to build twenty-five railways lines, over a hundred bridges, including five suspension bridges, eight pier and dock systems, three ships and a pre-fabricated army field hospital.To add to this he was a keen social engineer, building housing estates, churches and hospitals. We aim to diversify the Creative Sector. We achieve this by identifying, supporting and promoting non-traditional artists and filmmakers who might not otherwise consider a career in the sector. FILM: Through work with such organisations as Aik Saath and SWIPE, our Slough based YES programme provides free workshops in filmmaking open to all 11-25 year olds. ART: With the support of our Arts Council England partners HOME, we run quarterly free Meetups for all aspiring or professional artists aged 18+ alongside our new Arts Forum for leaders across Berkshire. Our clients ranging from BAFTA, BFI, Creative England, BBC, and Channel 4 contract us to devise and deliver regional and national outreach for their own training, recruitment and commissioning programmes. 2.TALENT DEVELOPMENT & PROMOTION Our goal is to develop the skills of a diverse talent pool and prepare each individual to progress on to successful paid employment in the creative industry. Through The Creative Collective, our talent development programme comprising a range of accredited and informal bespoke training workshops, as well as our one-to-one personalised Individual Progress Plan support, we ensure progress through networking, mentoring, accredited training as well as exclusive work placements, apprenticeships and connecting with funders. We have project funding from Arts Council England and work closely with NPO theatre company RIFCO. In film, our core partner (since 1999) is Pinewood Studios but we also regularly work with BFI, Screen Skills and Creative England . 3. CREATIVE & COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION From developing individual talent to supporting larger projects ranging from producing a first piece of art, to shooting your first drama, our focus is on producing projects that tell stories from new perspectives not currently seen in the mainstream media or art world. We co-develop, script, shoot and edit high-quality, emotive and engaging, cost-effective documentary, drama, animation and motion graphics and have a talent for connecting charitable and commercial clients. Through our ground breaking partnerships with companies like the BBC, Channel 4 and Disney, we continue to explore and build on new immersive content. We have developed new projects and ways of working through collaborations with global companies like SEGRO and innovative funders like The Rothschild Foundation.

James Gregory is the Founder & CEO of the Manchester-based Charity, Families Against Violence (FAM). The Charity has its origins in a tragic event over 13 years ago when the Founder’s son was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity in a gangland act of revenge. James personally experienced the lack of support for Black families in such tragic circumstances and resolved to do something about it. He founded Families Against Violence, a charity supporting principally Black and ethnic minority families in the Moss Side area with the over-arching aim of helping to prevent young people getting sucked into anti-social behaviour, criminal activity, gangs and violence. FAM works with hundreds of children and young people each week. The Charity uses sport, principally football, to engage with children and young people. Trained and experienced coaches can then mentor and become role models, helping sometimes hard-to-reach young people find pathways into training and employment and to have better life-chances. Separate from his role with FAM, James is the CEO of AAM. In both of these roles, and working with a network of experienced and inspirational coaches and trainers, he: – I. Networks with local and regional stakeholders, including in the criminal justice system; II. Acts as an advocate for addressing social injustices, particularly for Black and Ethnic Minority Communities; III. Plans, organises and runs sports events and activities for young people; IV. Plans and organises training events for young people; V. Manages a network of local sports coaches; and VI. Mentors young people. To support his role, James is a certified football coach and has obtained qualifications in ‘Working with Gangs’ and ‘Training the Trainer’, both from Birmingham University. He also has earned a mentoring Diploma from Manchester Metropolitan University. Feeding into his role with FAM, James spent 12 months as a Youth Worker for User Voice, an organisation that gives a voice to people in the criminal justice system. In that job he worked with young offenders in prisons help manage their reintegration into society.
