ActiveHistory.co.uk is the work of Russel Tarr. I am Head of History at the International School of Toulouse. Prior to this I worked at Wolverhampton Grammar School. I have a degreee in Modern History from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. I am also a fully-qualified teacher with a PGCE from the School of Education at Birmingham University. What is ActiveHistory.co.uk? ActiveHistory.co.uk (est. 1998) provides interactive simulations, decision-making games, self-marking quizzes, worksheets and lesson plans for teachers and students of World History. It provides materials on scores of topics from the Middle Ages to the present day, aimed at every age range between 11-18 years. It provides a highly effective means of teaching history using all the benefits of modern internet technology. ActiveHistory is a practical, continually evolving resource produced by a full-time history teacher for his students and his colleagues. All of the top activities have been produced with the classroom in mind, and are continually amended after being tried out in class by myself and other visitors. As a result the site has earned some glowing testimonials from its loyal subscribers and praise from newspapers such as the Sunday Times and the New York Times. Roger Frost in The Sunday Times wrote, "To see teaching creativity bubble onto the internet, and regain any lost joy for school, take a trip to Active History. Pick your year and topic, and discover an enjoyable, intensely hands-on learning environment...The exercises are witty, irreverent and often brilliant". Becky Hewlitt, writing the Times Educational Supplement, was of the opinion that, "If the Queen taught history then Russel Tarr would be a knight of the realm. His superb site has saved me thousands of hours of planning and is a constant source of innovative and exciting ideas."

Complete Lean Solutions Limited

complete lean solutions limited

Burton on Trent

A global Lean consultancy and training organisation with offices in Australia and the UK, servicing forward-thinking clients throughout Europe, North America and Australasia. Complete Lean Solutions was established in 2004 by Richard Pounder and Andy Kelsall. Between them they had over 22 years experience of working for Toyota in the UK and Europe. Initially offering straightforward Lean specialist services in Australia, it quickly became apparent that there was a market for structured Lean training. CLS-developed training programs have been created around real business need as opposed to simply ‘ticking the right boxes’ to obtain certification. With more diverse clients came the need for more diverse approaches. From banking through to telcos, pharma, food and healthcare, each project offers fresh challenges. The one thing that remains the same, however, is the Lean mindset. From some of the largest companies in the world through to business with only six employees, our approach is always the same: engage the people, listen to what they have to say and coach them through to success. In 2008, CLS commenced operations in the UK, quickly becoming established as a respected and successful Lean consultancy within manufacturing operations in the Midlands. Since then, CLS have become a nationally accredited training provider for NVQ’s in the UK, and have continually delivered successful Profit Improvement Projects (PIPs) in the UK, Europe, North America and Canada. In 2012 Andrew Lunn, General Manager of operations in UK, was invited to join the committee for Birmingham Best Practice in Construction (BBPC) and was responsible for identifying ‘transferable skills.’ Using our extensive knowledge in automotive and manufacturing, CLS developed training and materials that can be readily utilised within the construction industry.

Buckshaw Village green man The conversion from Flash to HTML5 Over the early years of the company, the predominant technology used in the company was Adobe Flash and most of the internal developers would recognise Flash as their core skill. In 2010 however, Greg realised that the days of Flash as the main delivery mechanism for e-learning were numberered and the internal team started their transition to development using HTML5. This foresight proved to be revolutionary for the company, as Lancashire Digital developers were upskilled to HTML5 well ahead of the curve. This put them in a strong position to win work for both new development using HTML5, but given the cross-skills of the team, a large quantity of Flash to HTML5 conversion projects were undertaken. Today sees the team as a well-seasoned group of HTML5 developers with a strong background in Flash development, along with back-end specialist developers for our platforms projects. Chrysalis Craft Coventry

chrysalis craft coventry

Coventry

Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC was founded in March 2020 in response to the urgent unmet needs of BAME and migrant communities who were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown has challenged the mental health and wellbeing of everyone, more so for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in our communities. Many have experienced unimaginable trauma and have seen major disruptions in their life already. The pandemic has amplified further the existing mental health problems. Often left in limbo, not able to take on higher education studies and not allowed to work (with many refugees under or unemployed) and likely to face loneliness or worse, direct discrimination, within their new communities. Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC run sessions and activities to help with healing, using art and different artistic methods for wellbeing. The aim is to build self-esteem and friendship through artistic techniques, using art to work against loneliness as a result of language, cultural and ability barriers. The social enterprise supports people from a variety of different backgrounds, focussing on disadvantaged adult women immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Focusing on women who came to Coventry and the surrounding area recently, and those who have been here for a long time, but who have experienced barriers to integration. Local authority, NHS and charities working with migrants’ commission and refer people onto in-person and online workshops. Grant funding supports materials and content development. Over the short period of the start-up, Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC supported thousands of individuals suffering from loneliness, domestic abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, homesickness and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder because of life experiences with positive results. During the pandemic the workshops have proven invaluable, acting as a safe environment and an information and signposting service. Directing people to urgently needed services they could not reach due to language barrier or stigma caused by misinformation.

New book - Interactive Computational Geometry in Python! Interactive Computational Geometry in Python, is now released. Click on the link in the sidebar for information and preview chapters. This book is an updated and expanded version of our popular “Interactive Computational Geometry - a taxonomic approach” ported from Mathematica to Python. It has some very useful extra material and greatly improved demonstrations and text. If you are not an experienced Mathematica programmer, you will find the Python code is much easier to undestand. In fact, when we made the port, we were delighted by just how simple and elegant the Python code turned out to be. We will no longer update the Mathematica version (although it will always remain available) and we consider “Interactive Computational Geometry in Python” to now be the definitive version of the text. Python is a great language for this sort of thing, and we hope and expect that moving to Python will make the book accessible to a much wider audience. We are very excited about this book! We have developed a complete process, including software, for creating long-form texts as interactive Jupyter notebooks and this book is the first result of our efforts. If you need help writing your own book in Jupyter, or just need help working with notebooks, please contact us for training and consultancy. Books Jim and Ila are authors of several best selling books on UML, BPMN and Model Driven Architecture. Our latest modeling book is “Secrets of Analysis”. This describes an approach to object oriented analysis called Generative Analysis. It tells you how to take unstructured, informal information, and, through a well-defined process of transformation, produce precise, structured information and ultimately UML models. If you ever wanted to learn the secrets of how experts perform great analysis and produce great UML analysis models, then this book is for you! We expect it will help re-establish OOA as a key discipline for the UML modeller/Business Analyst. Fed up with semantically weak user stories? Want to put some rigour back into your analysis process? This is the answer. Also be sure to check out our “Introduction to BPMN 2”. We believe that this is the first interactive modeling textbook ever produced. It is an enhanced ebook with animations and interactive figures for the iPad and Mac. Animations show you precisely how the various BPMN modeling element work. The interactive edition is available in Apple iBook Store. It is also available in a non interactive PDF version for all other readers from Amazon. Bespoke technical authoring We can help you author interactive texts in: - Apple iBooks - Jupyter - Wolfram Language Future books More or less as a hobby, Jim has been writing an interactive textbook on mathematics, music and musical set theory.
