Wadhurst

My name is Anna Robinson and I am the Executive Headteacher and Chief Executive Officer of MARK Education Trust. Our trust was established in 2012, and for the last 10 years has been a trust of one school, Beacon Academy in Crowborough. From September 2022, we are delighted to have welcomed Uplands Academy into our trust as our second school. I was the Headteacher of Beacon Academy from September 2015 – August 2022 prior to becoming the Executive Headteacher from September 2022, overseeing both of our schools. To support Uplands during their first year as an Academy and member of our trust, for this academic year, I will also be the named Headteacher of Uplands Academy. In addition, my colleague, David Callard, with an excellent and sustained track record of senior leadership at Beacon Academy, will also be joining me as our Senior Deputy Headteacher. In addition to bringing additional leadership capacity and experience of school improvement, we are looking forward to working with the well-known and established Uplands senior team, its staff and most importantly our inspiring and incredibly capable students. As with colleagues at Beacon Academy in Crowborough, those of us at Uplands are ambitious for excellence in all we do. Our vision aligns with our trust and that of Beacon Academy. This vision, which is established and sustained, is to provide the best possible education for all our students and to be an exceptional educational establishment for our communities. We are never complacent. Becoming a student at Uplands Academy I know that choosing a secondary school is one of the most important decisions you will make for your children and family. At Uplands, the relationships between our staff and our students are excellent and ones that we are proud of. Our staff have high expectations, are ambitious for our students, and they know them well. We pride ourselves on our rigorous focus on the child as a unique individual, including our most disadvantaged and those with SEND. We ensure that the lessons that our students receive are personalised and inclusive, enabling them to be actively engaged in their learning. Uplands Academy Vision At Uplands Academy, we want our children to be happy, successful and confident by providing the best possible education for all our students. We want to be an exceptional educational establishment for our community. Our curriculum for our students is rightly ambitious - it is as broad as it is balanced. It has a strong academic core which, where relevant includes vocational and technical ambitions with choices for students to opt into in key stages four and five. Our curriculum is expertly planned to maximise educational opportunities and prepare our students to be socially and economically successful. As a result of this, we want our students to develop keen interests, a lifelong passion for learning and an impressive, coherent, and cumulative understanding of the world. All of this meaning that they can consistently achieve highly and be prepared for future success and happiness in education, employment or training. We have uncompromisingly high expectations for the quality of education that our students receive, including the most disadvantaged and those with SEND - there is no room for complacency. We support and encourage our school community – we expect everyone to Make their MARK academically by being motivated, articulate, resilient and knowledgeable, both in their lessons and beyond, and socially both inside and out of our school environment by having excellent manners, being accepting, respectful and kind. These expectations are reflected in the excellent relationships that exist between our board of trustees, staff, students, parents, carers and the wider community. We recruit, retain and develop exceptional staff and trustees to ensure that through every aspect of their experience of Uplands, our students are inspired, engaged and challenged, enabling them to make excellent progress and attain well. This includes our most disadvantaged and those with SEND. Our staff care deeply - each day they strive to be positive role models, thus supporting the inclusive culture of our school environment. Our staff want our students to feel safe and happy and listened to academically, socially and in terms of their well-being. We have a culture that is highly aspirational and ambitious for excellence in all we do and where commonalities are identified and celebrated and that differences are respected, accepted, valued and nurtured. As staff we model what we want to see from one another and our students – we promote and expect a positive and motivated commitment to education from our students and their parents and carers. Our standards are unapologetically high – this applies to both our staff and students, thus enabling our teachers to teach and our students to learn and excel, at Uplands Academy and beyond. We encourage you to come and see this and Uplands for yourselves during this exciting new phase for our school.

By Jo Pick

Open to anyone who has been to me for training, either 4 week basic course or the loose lead & recall workshops and understand how I encourage you to communicate with your dogs. We will continue to build on the basics - lead work around distractions, walking to heel off lead, recall, sit stay, impulse control, and manners around other dogs at a distance. Practising 'leave it' and 'drop' at a distance and going on group walks. If you have attended an introductory class with me, or your dog already has basic manners and you are ready to continue practising, this is the course for you

4 weeks Basics/Beginners Course

By Jo Pick

We will discuss and practise basic manners and behaviours and how to attain those through primarily reward-based training, the timing and types of rewards, and setting boundaries using distraction, redirection and appropriate correction for unwanted behaviours. The behaviours we will primarily cover will be; • Loose lead walking, including desensitisation to exciting triggers such as other dogs • Recall - ensure this is a positive, fun behaviour, for both you and your dog, and to ensure your dog doesn't learn to ignore your recall. • Sit, stay and wait • Impulse control games. We will also discuss and practice, where possible, manners and long-term aims for a well-mannered family dog, such as meeting strangers and other dogs, visitors to the home and unwanted barking or nervousness. Other issues as needed by individuals that arise in the group discussions

1-to-1 training - an initial consult and first lesson

By Jo Pick

In private individual lessons, I aim to demonstrate, and help you learn, that we can communicate effectively with our dogs during our daily lives. For dogs we primarily do this with reward-based training and the use of resources and consequences of actions, for both the dog and yourself. We will also discover that it is ok to ask the dog not to do certain things, but in a non-aggressive way, to help the dogs understand what we don’t consider acceptable. We will further find that we can either encourage or suppress certain behaviours with positive and negative reinforcement and affirmatively communicate with dogs. The initial 1-hour consultation and lesson will usually occur at my premises near Lumphanan, so we can discuss and practice in a neutral, controlled environment. During this session I take the time to understand you, your dog and your needs. I also conduct training and address any behavioural issues. We often solve many of the common problems in this initial session. If needed, subsequent training can take place at my premises or a location that suits the issues - such as your home or a public place. The types of issues that I commonly help with are; Pulling on the lead Reactive behaviour when walking your dog on a lead - either over excitement or fear aggression Dog recall issues. Jumping up and bad manners with visitors and family members Excessive barking. Toilet training problems. Excessive 'mouthing' or biting. Stealing food or other objects. Anything else!

RACISM – ACKNOWLEDGING AND UNDERSTANDING

By Inclusive Solutions

In this course we deepen participants understanding of systemic racism and the spectrum of privilege. It challenges the participants to examine their behaviours and take close looks at some of the views they have held since a very young age, e.g. this area is a “bad” area, because it has a high proportion of black/brown people living in it, or that young black men in tracksuits are “thugs”. We think about where these messages come from and how people are indoctrinated by the media. Course Category Inclusion Team Building Leadership Emotional needs Description In this course we deepen participants understanding of systemic racism and the spectrum of privilege. We explore the reasons why white people are so defensive when it comes to talking about race. We discuss having racial biases and the implications of them, such as unconsciously insulting people around us in the workplace. When we become aware of how our behaviours can affect people, we then look for solutions.  The course is designed for groups of professionals to come together as a team to try and take responsibility for the racism that goes on in their workplace – empowering the leadership to have difficult conversations with team members and create a paradigm shift across the entire organisation.  Please come with an open mind, and you might be surprised at what you find out. We are striving for a world where racism is an open conversation and not a topic that we shy away from.  Testimonials “That was a really insightful session and thought provoking. I would love to attend more sessions on racism. Thank you for the engaging questions and delivery” “Lots of things to reflect on!” Learning Objectives Participants will: Confront their own racism and unconscious biases Become aware of the ways they treat people differently based on race Think about practical changes they can make in their workplaces Who Is It For? Why don’t we talk about race? What does your race mean to you? Examining our privilege – activity Interracial friendship video Visioning – what does the ideal workplace look like?
