With a strong family history in the clothing industry, right back to my great great grandfather, Johannes, shown on the right (a tailor to Queen Victoria & Prince Albert, no less!) I am an internationally experienced merchant. I have worked in Retail and Wholesale for internationally recognised brands such as Levi Strauss, Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, Barbour and Ellesse. I started out at the age of 18 as a trainee buyer for a European Clothing Wholesaler, Campari International Plc, where I was mentored by the managing director and my father John, in all aspects of design, product development, sampling, sourcing, buying, brand franchises and major account selling. This led to the opportunity of travelling the world extensively around Europe, the Far East and the United States, providing me with a rich understanding of different cultures and the ways of doing business on the international stage. From there I went on to live and work in Germany, then back to the UK where I set up a designer fashion store business with a good friend in Clapham, South London. I then proceeded to work for Timberland EMEA out of their UK EHQ; I consulted for the Pentland Group (with the Ellesse brand); then to Levi Strauss Europe as Design & Merchandise Director for Dockers EMEA; next to Simonside, near Newcastle to consult on the J Barbour & Sons clothing brand; before moving overseas once again to work as Senior Merchandise Director Menswear for Tommy Hilfiger Europe, in Amsterdam. On returning home once more, I then began working on small consulting projects. That led me to become, a creative industry focussed business adviser initially, with LSBC, as part of a London based business advisory team. From my experience/background, I have developed strong business insights and an entrepreneurial approach to developing business strategies, as I work with both new and established businesses. These businesses include fashion creatives, artists, service industry professionals and a multitude of on-line and off-line line enterprises in the food & beverage, tech, furniture, beauty, travel, sports and well-being sectors. In assisting in the process of setting up a business by developing business plans; financial projections; product management strategies and gaining access to business funding, I have developed a broad skill set that is well appreciated by those who work/have worked with me (please check out my client testimonials). I now also work as a proud Partner of the British Library where I deliver quality and popular business planning and business development workshops. I have also worked on the Reset Restart programme started as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. I also work as a mentor on programmes such as the UK government’s HELP TO GROW Programme, operating as a consultant engaged by Brunel University London.

Jon Gibson, Didac’s Managing Director, was himself an apprentice working within the industry, before becoming a lecturer at Brunel College in Bristol from 1989-1995. Commercial Director Martin James was an undergraduate trainee with G Plan Furniture becoming a Chartered Engineer, before moving into CNC router machine manufacture. PETA was founded in 1970 by Alex Zemenides who, at the time, was Managing Director of component manufacturing company Sealectro. At the time, Zemenides felt there was a lack of training and development opportunities for his staff in the local area. Training that could be tailored to his staff and business, that met industry and commercial standards and that didn’t have to work around a rigid syllabus or programme. Together with five other local businesses, he created the Portsmouth Engineering Training Association – PETA – that was based in Southsea, Portsmouth. The combined vision of this group was to establish an organisation, controlled by local business, that would be free from external influences to concentrate on the training and development of people employed, or about to be employed, in industry and commerce. As such, PETA was set up to be (and still is) a registered charity, directed by an executive council of leaders elected from our member base. There are no shareholders at PETA, only stakeholders. We operate on a self-financing basis and are non-profit making, which means all our funds are reinvested into the services and training we deliver. Whilst our heritage is in engineering, today, PETA offers over 200 courses and apprenticeship programmes in the most sought after professional, digital and technical skillsets – from management training to health and safety qualifications, IT skills and engineering. Today, PETA is one of the largest and most respected training providers on the south coast and we will continue to build on this reputation, transforming careers and building the next generation of business leaders and technical experts.

When World War Two broke out the firm moved into the production of aircraft wings and it was to be peacetime before it turned its attention to plumbing, manufacturing copper cylinders and complete plumbing systems, mostly for Australia and the Middle East. As the markets for complete systems decreased McDonald Water Storage found itself expanding within the copper cylinder market. McDonald Water Storage is proud of its independent status – it is one of only a very few British independent manufacturers remaining in the plumbing and heating industry. The 1930’s saw the original company formed as McDonald Engineers by the McDonald brothers, motor and general engineers. WWII had McDonald Engineers rapidly expanding to three factories manufacturing various items for the war effort but mainly aircraft wings for Hudson Bombers and other aircraft. The end of the war saw them to move into new products such as pre-fabricated plumbing, sheet metalwork and vented copper cylinders. Financial instability in the 1960’s saw the company bought over by the Inglefield Group who employed James R Stewart (late Father of Bill, Jamie and Grandfather of David and Rachael) as managing director in 1960. JR Stewart performed a management buyout in 1973. At this time the main activities were prefabricated plumbing, vented copper cylinders (solar cylinders from 1968, foam lagging from 1971, coils from 1975), truck bodies and waste disposal skips. Due to declining markets and a recession, the decision was taken to close the steel fabricating factory in Kirkcaldy and rationalise the entire operation into the Loughborough Road, Kirkcaldy factory – concentrating wholly on copper cylinders and soon after, acquiring the BSI Kitemark. The company bought its first computer in 1986. 1990’s Huge changes! The company moved premises to Glenrothes in 1992. The POWERflow unvented system was launched the same year, soon followed by the THERMflow mains pressure thermal storage system. Jamie Stewart took over as Sales Director to support Bill Stewart as Managing Director and James Stewart became chairman. James sadly passed away and Bill also took on the role of Chairman. During the 1990’s, it was decided to pursue product specification by appointing two technical sales managers. The company website and emails were setup in 1996 one of the first in their industry to do so. In 2004 The Company bought the Amada CNC Punch Machine, our biggest capital Investment at that time. In 2006 the company self funded and built a 10,000sq.ft. factory extension to accommodate increased sales. More recently in 2018 Jamie Stewart became MD and David Stewart son of Bill, became Sales Director. The company took on a Divisional Director for England and to make it clearer to potential new customers what we do, changed our name to McDonald Water Storage and took on a full time marketing manager to spread the word! In 2020 amid the Covid strife, we celebrated our 75 year anniversary. A year of challenging trading and working conditions with the worldwide pandemic. Despite that we saw the Company all pull together to ensure not only survival, but indeed many improvements, growth and investment and several product launches with the introduction of MULTIflow, ELSOflow, WHEELIflow and COPPERtouch. A redesign and relaunch of our website was undertaken, with improved customer usability and a dedicated spares and online cylinder section.
