The Grange runs outstanding residential cookery courses which can act as a spring board at any stage in life. The Essential Cookery Course is a fun, creative, practical and useful way to spend four weeks, especially following the rigours of the final years of school, university or an intense career… or any other phase of life! It is a really valuable experience which can give the skills, friendships and practicality to last a lifetime, as well as being invaluable in making very employable assets out of able students. "The Essential Cookery Course is aimed at people wanting to venture into ski seasons or seasonal boat work but it's also perfect for anyone who wants to learn new skills. This four-week course will build your confidence in all areas of cookery, as well as menu planning, presentation and kitchen management...." Jamie Magazine Many of our past students have had amazing careers cooking around the world working in great chalets in the Alps and America, on glamorous yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, in beautiful villas, on tropical islands, on safaris in the wilds of Africa and on its rugged coast, on horseback safaris in Mongolia… the list goes on! Our students have worked in many stately homes around this country and in Scottish lodges. Other students use the course as the first step to a career in the food industry – as journalists in top magazines, running restaurants, cooking agencies, cookery schools, party planning organisations, event management and catering companies. They also love to cook for their family and friends. Amongst our famous alumni are Pippa Middleton, Santa Montefiore and Danny Goffey (who came third in Celebrity Masterchef). "SO much more than a cookery course..." Ellie Howes We use the best local ingredients from our gardens, nearby family farms and artisans to make dishes from around the world with fantastic flavours, that are easy to cook. Jane Averill, who leads the Grange, is as passionate about produce as she is about her students. Her global travels enable her to understand and educate about food and cooking through dishes from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. If you would like to visit the Grange please do get in touch to see it all first hand and get a real feel of what we do. The Grange also has a restaurant on site, where students can gain an insight into the commercial world of food and wine. We'd love to welcome you to the Grange.

One was through doing management consulting in the public and private sectors, and coming to understand just how much stress, inefficiency and sadness arises from communication and conflict difficulties in the workplace. The other route was through being a patient, a parent of children with disabilities and a family carer, and witnessing how difficult it can be to make plans for the future when the present involves difficult discussions and many people. So I specialise in making sure that people feel comfortable with the process they undertake with me, and that it leads them towards feeling comfortable and confident about their future. I aim to be thoroughly supportive, reassuring and encouraging at all times. My professional work and personal experience in health and social care mean that I am particularly experienced in supporting people who are living with any form of illness, disability, mental health condition or life-limiting condition. I have particular personal experience of working with people who are deaf or hearing impaired, on the autism spectrum, experiencing mental illness and living with dementia or stroke. Why I love being a mediator I came to mediation through a confluence of circumstances which made me think, ‘There must be a better way for people to deal with their difficulties than to threaten legal action, or refuse to engage in communication at all!’ I realised that a great deal of my management consultancy work was really… conflict resolution. It gave me such pleasure and relief when long-held rifts within and between teams melted away after some good, authentic communication. This piqued my interest to find out more about the art of conflict resolution, and I did my first certificated training, and started practising as a community mediator. Later I qualified as a civil and employment mediator, and have been mediating ever since. It’s astonishing to witness people’s lives turn from a turmoil of distressing, intractable ‘stuckness’, to a new phase in which, for example, neighbours can conceive of greeting each other again; or work colleagues re-establish trust between each other after maybe years of mistrust, stress and non-communication. Mediation takes empathy, patience and persistence, and it is a skill I will develop and hone endlessly over years to come, but its core aspect is a belief that people really can find peace again, given the right support and a safe space to explore options for settling differences. Facilitating such processes is a real honour. Nothing beats the sight of former disputants smiling, shaking hands, or even (more often than you would think) hugging, at the end of a mediation.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? Our approach is light touch with minimal intervention in the environment and prioritising nature. We are currently developing our site facilities and creating spaces for small groups and low impact events. These include bushcraft, forest school, wellbeing sessions, forest bathing, yoga, pilates, artist retreats etc. We’re already working with schools, charities, youth and arts groups. If you've got a small scale event, workshop or idea you'd like to make happen, we would love to hear from you. Just drop us a message on our contact page. NATURE Our ethos is very much one of balance, so for us plants and animals are as important as people. We are currently working with fantastic environmental advisors to establish what plants and animals are currently residing on our site. Our aim is to protect the habitats that already exist, create a comprehensive management plan and increase biodiversity where possible. It's all about the science! In common with most of the British Isles the land here has been managed by humans for hundreds of years - a mixture of farming, park land and old tree plantations. It’s not wild in the true sense of an untouched natural ecosystem but it’s a special place that has been left pretty much to itself for several decades. Check out our Instagram to see photos of some of the animals who make their home here. We’re just starting our long term project to create more detailed surveys of the flora and fauna, and are excited to meet and work with new people. If this is your area of expertise, and are able to help, please do get in touch.

Share and Repair

Library of Things and Repair Cafes. We are currently (as of Spring 2021) introducing HOW TO Reduce your Carbon Footprint workshops within the Share and Repair Shop and as a pilot project within primary schools. Another strand of ‘sharing’ is our Library of Things. We started this at the Weston Hub in November 2018 and changed our official name to Share & Repair in line with our expanded vision. We become a charity: In April 2020, Share and Repair gained charitable status as a CIO (charitable incorporated organisation) no 1189015. This is a major milestone for us and means we are accountable and can now raise funds through grant making trusts and from Gift Aid. We opened our first pop-up shop: In June 2020 we hit another major milestone when we opened the doors to the Share and Repair Shop in the centre of Bath. Our first location on Broad Street had an incredible response, raising awareness of sharing and repairing in Bath. In August 2021 we moved to another location at 3 York Buildings, George Street (BA1 2EB), which is now the new home for the Bath Library of Things and a place where we run even more repair sessions. HomeKIT launches: In Spring 2021 we officially launch HomeKIT. This is a new project that will see us taking donations of good-quality but unwanted kettles, irons and toasters and sharing these ‘home kits’ with partner charities who will distribute them to low-income households. If items need repairing, we certainly have the skills and means to do so. We’re really excited about expanding our work in this way and working with other organisations.
