Communication Access UK is an initiative developed in partnership by charities and organisations that share a vision to improve the lives of people with communication difficulties. Led by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, the partnership includes: Communication Matters (the UK chapter of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication that inspired this work for the UK) The Stroke Association Headway – the brain injury association The Motor Neurone Disease Association The National Network of Parent Carer Forums The Business Disability Forum Disability Rights UK; and The Makaton Charity Together, we’ve developed the Communication Access Symbol, a new disability access symbol underpinned by a completely free training package and standards. We hope that these will help you, or your businesses / organisation to better support people with communication difficulties.

Outside of our regular class schedule, we offer a range of bespoke classes and workshop formats for individuals, groups, and companies for all ages and abilities. To ensure accessibility, we can also work within a set budget to suit your organisation's or individual needs.Our youth programme is aimed at 11-18 year olds and up to 24 years for disabled young people and young people with special educational needs and associated learning difficulties. Since 2005 we have been running a successful schools, colleges & youth programme. Our experience and unique layering system of instruction allows us to work with people of all abilities within a professional and positive environment. We work with children from 6 years with no upper age limit. People we work with include: people with Downs Syndrome, Autism, have visual impairments, or use wheelchairs. Sanjuro Instructors are deaf aware and Anthony, one of Sanjuro's instructors uses BSL and Makaton in class and so deaf or hard of hearing young people looking for this communication are welcome to his classes. We offer female only self defence workshops, padwork sessions for teenagers, DanceCombat classes in the school holidays, the list is endless.

We are a community interest company called Choose Nature CIC with our site being located adjacent to the Wheal Martyn Clay Works, Carthew, mid-Cornwall. We aim to broaden the accessibility and inclusivity of outdoor learning opportunities and therapeutic support in nature. Mission statement: ‘Choose Nature CIC works to increase the wellbeing of individuals, communities and the environment by inspiring life long learning and care. Our calm enriching outdoor spaces are emotionally grounding and cultivate a strong relationship with nature’. We are continuing to restore and develop the site. It has so many exciting areas including gardening spaces, wooded areas, wildlife ponds, orchard, classroom, and poly tunnels. We currently have our weekly ‘Mamas in Nature’ group (supporting new mums and babies as transition into parenthood), ‘Making Tracks’ group (supporting young people with additional needs) and different volunteering opportunities as we establish a volunteer programme. We also host a variety of family events and workshops throughout the year. More recently we have been welcoming St Austell College students onto site to gain work experience on their construction course, as well as striving to become a Makaton Friendly Organisation. About this training According to The Makaton Charity, over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or a way to support speech. This includes young children and people with learning disabilities. The Makaton Charity explain that, “Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.” During this virtual introduction session, The Makaton Charity trainer will: provide general information about Makaton and how it may be used in different settings to support language development and communication, enable attendees to learn approximately 30 useful everyday signs and symbols, alongside 12 more words which have been tailored for museum settings. This virtual training session will be delivered over two hours by The Makaton Charity. Who should attend? This training is aimed at staff at museums, galleries and heritage sites who are interested in making their organisations more welcoming to Makaton users. Please note this session is now sold out.
