It was, in fact, an accident and a period of recuperation that changed my life and set me on the path to my calligraphy career, culminating in the founding of Laura Prudence Calligraphy. As a former schoolteacher, I appreciate that being a good educator also means being an excellent learner. That’s why I chose to study under some of the U.K.’s leading calligraphers. I have worked with the world-renowned Modern Calligraphy Company known for their alliances with leading luxury brands. Additionally, I have trained under the watchful eye of Gaynor Goffe and Mary Noble, both leading tutors in calligraphic arts. I specialise in Modern Dip Pen and Modern Brush Calligraphy and the harder to master Classic Copperplate and Flourished Copperplate Calligraphy. Getting to study in the only Island city of England was a great experience. Being an Interior Design student with a love for History and Architecture, I was overwhelmed with curiosity to explore the place with so much of histories, its ancient art and architecture around the city. The beaches there, is another thing to be mentioned that was just at walking distance from the city. Getting to study and explore at the same time actually brightened up my stay in the city. I met Hetal at the beginning of my academy, she was a great support and actually the person who inspired me to get to explore the place around. I know I did not make wrong choice on selecting my University. It was worth it!

Learning languages has been my passion for many years now and after studying German and Chinese at university and Portuguese and Spanish on my own, I've found ways to get to that advanced level more quickly! I always found I learnt much better on my own, but importantly, with the right resources. As a teenager, I took French, German and Latin at school and fell in love with the feeling of thinking and communicating with others in a foreign language. But only whilst studying German and Chinese at university did the effective ways of learning a language click. I’ve learnt in formal education as well as with my own methods from home. I've used this knowledge to pass the advanced C1 and C2 exams and now I want to share those methods and resources with you! The 3 components During my year living in Beijing and staying with a Chinese family, I discovered that the learning curve to the intermediate level was fairly steep, but it quickly flattens out. To get over that hump, you have to work smarter. Speaking a lot is crucial, but I found I felt more confident the more I exposed myself to these three things: different accents, different speeds and a variety of topics.

The idea for this site came as my sister and I were practically passed out after an amazing massage at Rituels d’Orient in Barcelona in 2010, and it was the first step down a path of exploring my passions and sharing them with others. I just thought, wouldn’t it be great if you could offer this holiday to everyone; a safe, easy, affordable spa and hotel break – the kind that you could take your mum on and know that she would enjoy it. I hope that this website can do for travel what Gok Wan has done for fashion • Help you to find a good quality, affordable break somewhere new and exciting, that will replace the same old panic buys • Give you a designer spa holiday experience for a budget holiday price As much as I love looking through holiday sites on the internet, sometimes the amount of choice just gets too much – and then I find myself on Tripadvisor trying to figure out which of the rave reviews are made up and which of the nasty ones are just people who were having a bad day. I aim to only recommend one affordable hotel, spa, sight, top restaurant, everyday restaurant, and shopping tip in each location, so you can easily create your break with no need to search through all the travel websites or experience Jellyfish. London is the exception, but even here, in my home town, I will only recommend the exceptional (and that includes exceptional value.) In October 2009 I had 2 weeks holiday from work. I would have loved to have booked something but I was so burnt out and confused by all the choice that I gave up. I had a nice time – I spent time with my family, went to IMBS for a massage, took up yoga again, did lots of DIY, visited the Cotswolds and even surfed at East Wittering, but I also decided to never let myself get that run down again. So amongst the great spa and hotel breaks that I’ll be sharing here are also ideas for escapes that take a few minutes, hours or just a day, everyday escapes that you can indulge in, if you just can’t face the idea of packing a bag or getting on a plane. We all love to get away, but as the person who gets asked to sort out the travel details, by boyfriends, family and even my work colleagues (who are desperate for me to organise a trip to my favourite Moroccan spa) I also know how great it would be sometimes to just find a value for money holiday at the click of a button – and I hope you’ll find it here! And I hope you will tell me if there are things you want that aren’t here yet, and what you think of these escapes.

I am a mixed media textile artist based in Southsea. I have an interest in exploring narrative through textiles, using mixed media collage to create fabric books, art quilts and collections of themed illustrations. I am also interested in journaling and telling personal stories through collections of memories, data and photographs. My background is a combination of art and design practices - I studied Illustration at Kingston University before becoming a secondary school textiles teacher. I combine the two disciplines to create fabric artwork with an illustrative quality and narrative. For example I often use song lyrics and quotations as starting points, and text features in most of my artwork. Whilst studying illustration I specialised in creating whimsical collages from sketches and paper ephemera and I bring the same techniques to textiles, layering fabrics, stitch and embellishments to create mixed-media mini-quilts and fabric books. I love to work to a specific theme and take on long projects focusing on one topic. This might turn into a series of Illustrations (The World of Jane Austen), a fabric book (Into The Woods) or a single large piece built up over time (Lockdown Quilt). A lover of bright colours and bold prints, I draw inspiration from 1960s and 70s children’s books, psychedelic music posters and vintage textiles. I am very lucky to have a studio on the seafront in Old Portsmouth which is open to the public.
