The Diocese of Bristol is the Church of England across Bristol, South Gloucester, North Wiltshire and Swindon. There are 30,000 people worshipping regularly in more than 200 churches, led by hundreds of clergy serving within seven deaneries. Around 15,000 children and young people attend our 72 church schools, while chaplains serve in institutions across our region. Our bishops lead and oversee the Church in the Diocese of Bristol. Rt Revd Vivienne Faull is the 56th Bishop of Bristol and was consecrated Bishop at a service at St Pauls Cathedral in July 2018. She was installed as the 56th Bishop of Bristol at Bristol Cathedral on 20 October 2018 and introduced as a Lord Spiritual at the House of Lords on 23 October. Rt Revd Dr Lee Rayfield, the Bishop of Swindon, supports the role of the Diocesan Bishop. He works across the diocese alongside his community leadership role in Swindon. We are shaping a new vision and set of priorities for the coming years in a 12-month process called Transforming Church. Together. We want to understand what we do well, what we can change for the better and how to create a positive way forward together. Between February and April 2021 we will be talking and listening to lots of different people, from both inside and outside the church. As part of the Church of England, we are participating in the Renewal and Reform Programme in a variety of ways.

Prior to specialising in the finance sector, I coached employees within Coca Cola, the Royal Mail and taught within institutions such Bristol and Bath University – where I helped PhD students to articulate the value of their complex research to prospective buyers. And before that, I worked in marketing where I won awards for my work in public relations and ability to communicate stories. At times, I work with a range of associates to ensure that the material is robust and at the forefront of new thinking and research.

Hi everyone, I am Debbie and I created and run the Elsa Support website. My motto is ‘Together we can make a difference’. One of the things I noticed very quickly when I was working in school was that there was a real lack of ELSA resources. I am a bit of a Google queen but even so it was difficult, without spending a huge amount of money on things, to find anything really suitable. I ended up writing my own planning and coming up with ideas and thought why not share them, that was the start of Elsa Support…… It is all about the BEES I love my bees and you might wonder why? Bees are: Busy, they work incredibly hard Work as a team always Social creatures and do communicate with each other Co-operate with each other for the same aim All have very different roles and divide their ultimate job between them all Create honey that feeds them, and us, they even store it for lean times Adaptable and do so when environmental factors change Bees work together for a common goal or aim, we can learn so much from them. They are the reason my very first ‘nurturing’ group was called ‘Busy Bees’. Well that and the fact I managed to buy some fabulous ‘bee cushions’! My vision for that first group was a group of children who belonged. We all know belonging boosts self-esteem. Feeling part of a community can have such an impact on children. Creating a group where children worked together as a team, who supported each other and socialised with each other. In fact, after the very first group I ran I overheard one of the very quiet and shy children organising for them all to meet up at playtime the next day. A major part of my role was helping children with social and emotional issues. It became a huge interest to me to try and break down barriers to learning. I am a big fan of group work and have written many interventions over the years which you can find on the website. I try to keep the cost of resources as low as I can because to me it is important that you do use them, but it is important to me that you can have some free resources to work with children, I know how difficult it is with school budgets. Every Friday I create something for free and share with you all. The website has grown from strength to strength and I have had many emails and messages to tell me how useful it has been to people setting out on the ELSA journey but also helpful to teachers, teaching assistants, learning mentors, counsellors and many other professionals. Back to the Bees and community My vision of my very first ‘nurturing group’ was based on Bees and my vision includes that for ELSA’s and other professionals working with children on social and emotional issues. Mental health awareness, quite rightly, is becoming a huge thing due to so many factors. I really wanted to create community amongst all those people working for the same aims. This is to support you in your role supporting children. Some ELSA’s/adults do work alone in school and just need a bit of support, a listening ear, reassurance and some kind words. Our main group on Facebook has nearly 3000 members, who are all so supportive of each other. It is a wonderful community of like minded people. We have a mentoring section where you can be paired up with another person if you feel you need that extra bit of support. I listen to you, I get involved in discussion, I suggest resources, I suggest ideas and I create resources for you. You tell me what you want, and I try my best to create it for you. Do join us, together we can make a difference! What is ELSA? An ELSA in a school is an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. There is a recognised ELSA training course aimed specifically at Teaching Assistants in schools. Examples of things covered on the course are social skills, emotions, bereavement, social stories and therapeutic stories, anger management, self-esteem, counselling skills such as solution focus and friendship. To find out more about this course, contact the Educational Psychologists in your LEA and ask them if they are running one, if not ask them if it is possible for the future. Also check out neighbouring LEAs, they will sometimes take people out of their area to make up numbers. MARK DEVEREUX PROJECTS (MDP) IS AN INDEPENDENT CURATORIAL AND ARTIST DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION. WE SPECIALISE IN SUPPORTING EARLY TO MID-CAREER ARTISTS THROUGH CREATIVE COLLABORATION AND TAILORED MENTORING. MDP is a small but devoted team seeking to create safer, braver spaces for artists. Our meticulous approach is founded on listening, trust, honesty and caring. We build critical but nurturing relationships with artists across a variety of artforms. We collaborate with artists across the UK to develop and curate ambitious creative projects, ranging from touring solo exhibitions to participatory workshops. This challenges artists through creative risk-taking while introducing their practice to new audiences. Our work creates new paid opportunities for artists that aren’t freely available. Our professional development work focuses on the individual artist, offering a unique pathway outside of institutional programmes. Since 2013 we have provided hundreds of artists with invaluable advice, guidance and critique through one-to-one mentoring sessions, specialist workshops and national artist development programmes. We ensure that our professional development activities are affordable and seek to help artists when cost is a barrier. MDP is committed to dismantling the barriers that often prevent artists from advancing their careers, such as a lack of formal artistic training, childcare responsibilities, or being Disabled or neurodiverse. We work towards our ambition that artists will be valued and paid for their work, able to forge sustainable careers on their own terms.

Breathing techniques and mindfulness are really difficult for a lot of people on the spectrum. By working directly with the body, we avoid the stress of having to use the ‘top down’ approaches of more traditional therapies. Showing people how to work directly to calm the body can be much more efficient. When you learn how to be in a calm state and how your eyes, ears, face, voice and thinking can come back ‘on line’, you feel like yourself again. When you consistently teach your body to be in this state, you improve your vagal tone – your ability to deal with stress. Moving between the needs of person and process, we seek an equilibrium between action and spaces of rest and calm. We are not simply checking into a meditative state. We are continually watching, listening and moving the body into deeper states of active stillness, continually developing consciousness and mastery of this state. I guess I’m just a “singing nerd” at the end of the day! I love singing, I love listening to other people sing and I love it when people start to truly express themselves through their singing voices with power, presence and confidence. I’ve been singing all my life. I started out singing in a very good, local High Anglican church choir at the age of 7 that exposed me to harmony and counterpoint, Requiems and Latin - all whilst wearing robes and a frilly ruff! I managed to obtain my Bishops’ Chorister Award just before my voice broke, before moving to the Alto and then finally the Tenor sections of the choir. At this stage my ear was drifting away from classical choral singing and more towards Soul, RnB and Gospel (thanks Whoopi Goldberg and Sister Act!) As a Gospel Singer, I sang with the Liverpool Love & Joy Gospel Choir for many years, touring all over the country from small town halls to football stadia - I had truly fallen in love with this very expressive and emotive art form, and eventually set up Sanctified Gospel Choir who went on to win a Gospel Entertainment & Music (GEM) Award in 2005. I managed to gain a place to study music at the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) which was set up by former-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, and graduated with honours in 2003. During my time studying at LIPA, I had the opportunity to sing and perform with a vast array of talented artists and performers and fell into providing backing vocals for a number of different main-stream artists of the time. Having discovered over time that I really enjoyed singing backing vocals, was happier with my back to an audience directing as opposed to standing in the spotlight, it was no surprise to me that I ended up gravitating towards teaching singing as a side hustle. And that’s what it was, a side hustle, I had no clue what I was doing and that’s when I fortunately discovered the Speech Level Singing methodology or SLS. Upon completion of my initial SLS training, I was then also invited to Lecture in Vocals at LIPA and taught there for 12 years in total, teaching one-to-one and group singing classes to the students on the Music, Acting and Dance degree and foundation level courses. After achieving Level 3 status within the SLS organisation, I wanted to broaden out my knowledge of vocal pedagogy, vocal harmonics and acoustics, and along with a number of other teachers from around the world came together under the guidance of Dave Stroud to form what is now known as Vocology in Practice or ViP. Shortly after helping to found ViP, where I served as Education Director for a year, I obtained my MA in Music from the University of Salford, where I focussed my studies on the Psychology of Performance and the condition, "Adophobia" (literally the Fear of Singing), on which I wrote extensively for my thesis. I work hard to keep myself informed on the latest pedagogical research and developments within in the world of vocal health and how to teach to ensure that I can provide the very best for my clients. I’ve also recently started training in Laryngeal Massage so that I can bring this highly beneficial manual therapy to the my clients. Highlights of my career to date include being a Lecturer in Singing at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and helping to establish and teach on the singing program on the BA(hons) in Musical Theatre at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona. I have also been fortunate to train voices at Rare Studios in Liverpool. I arranged and directed the backing choir on the 2012 UK Christmas No.1 song "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" on behalf of the Justice Collective, for which I was awarded a Gold Disc. Aside from my teaching studio, I am the choral director for the Liverpool Community Choir, training the lead voices for the Birkenhead Operatic Society and have recently started training voices for the Pro Vocal Artist artist development program. Over the last ten years or so, my career has taken me down the path of teacher training and I am fortunate to train teachers for two organisations; BAST (Be A Singing Teacher), where I am one of only 5 teacher trainers in the world, and MVT (Modern Vocal Training), the latter of which I serve as an Educational Director. I absolutely love training new teachers; I find it to be really invigorating, plus it keeps me accountable and makes sure that I’m keeping abreast of the latest developments in my field.

The former Head of Games, Guy Fletcher, was the reason I applied to Bedford School. Bringing (as I did) the Tonbridge 1st XI for the annual two-day cricket match to Bedford, Guy was not only the first at the ground in the morning, ready to welcome us with a huge energy, beaming smile, full of laughter and cheer, coffee, all we needed, but also first in the nets to throw balls at his boys, attending to their needs, tough on them when he needed to be, listening, cajoling, hugely respected, greatly loved. He cared deeply, about them, about winning, yes, but more about doing things the right way, teaching boys how to grow up, to be good men, to ask a lot of themselves, but also to show respect to those around them and to stand tall if things were not going so well. He asked a lot of himself, too. He loved sport, but he valued academic work, music, art, drama and all other interests as equals, as coherent strands in purposeful lives, and he was first to support everything away from the pitch, encouraging his boys to take an interest, to stretch their minds, to give life a go in all its richness. He was finally great fun, wonderful company after the game, full of insight into life’s quirkiness and making the most of every minute given to him. If the rest of Bedford School is like Guy, I thought, then it must be a great place. I now know that it is.
