Our approach to behaviour and policy change focuses on working within government and community structures to build the capacity of professionals on a long-term, sustainable basis. We train professionals like teachers, health workers and the police at early stages of their careers, and equip them with the skills to be agents of change in the lives of vulnerable women and girls. Our experience has shown that if we can train one teacher, we can positively impact on the lives of all the children they teach in the course of their teaching career. If we can train one lecturer at a Teacher Training College, we can change the way teachers are trained. If we can change a curriculum, we can change an entire teaching system. OUR METHODOLOGY

anaesthetics for juniors

We developed this Webinar Series because we feel there is a paucity of anaesthetic & ICU teaching in the foundation curriculum. Junior doctors often have to assess and refer critically unwell patients to ICU and/or emergency surgery out of hours with little senior support. In addition, many junior doctors are unaware of their patients’ journey after they are taken to the ICU. This series of webinars will enable junior doctors and medical students to develop this understanding and build their skills and confidence surrounding anaesthesia & intensive care. These webinars will also be an excellent introduction to the specialty for those considering a career in Anaesthetics / Critical Care. The webinars are free to attend, and each attendee will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of feedback for the lecturer.

Prof Venu Kavarthapu is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist interest in lower limb orthopaedics. He was appointed as a Consultant at King’s in 2006. He qualified at the AP University of Health Sciences in India, before completing his basic surgical and specialist registrar rotation training in the South East Thames Region. His sub-speciality training included a Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery Fellowship in Los Angeles and a Foot and Ankle Fellowship in London. Prof Kavarthapu was the orthopaedic member of the King's Diabetic Foot Team, which in 2007 won a prestigious Hospital Doctor Award. Prof Kavarthapu lectures at national and international conferences on diabetic foot surgery, trauma, hip arthroscopy, and primary and revision hip arthroplasty. He is also actively involved in research and has published several scientific articles on Trauma and Orthopaedics. Prof Kavarthapu’s other roles include Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, lead clinician for the Orthopaedic department, and Orthopaedic Training Programme Director for SE London. He has been appointed Associate Professor at Odense University Hospital and University of Southern Denmark. He is also chairs the British Indian Clinical and Academic Partnership.

The Defence College is a UK-based organisation specialising on providing technical short courses to engineers and applied science professionals working in defence sector. It also offers engineering R&D consultancy services. The organisation is served by a number of highly experienced academics specialising in the defence technical educations. One such example is Dr Bidur Khanal. He is a senior academic with a long and established track record of teaching engineering courses in UK Higher Education sector. In particular, he has developed a niche in teaching/training defence engineering courses. He was working at Cranfield University’s Centre for Defence Engineering (CDE) as a lecturer in Complex Weapons, where he spent a number of years teaching defence engineering topics in military land vehicle propulsion, transmission system design, weapons design, and fighting vehicle design. Dr Khanal has delivered short courses to defence organizations (currently to US & UK Army and Canadian defence personnels) as an external consultant, and the teaching are focused on weapons engineering courses e.g. Military Engine Technologies, Military Tracked Vehicle Transmission Systems and Designs, Gun System Designs, Fighting Vehicle Design etc. Dr Khanal is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a member of Royal Aeronautical Society, UK. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK. He is also an active researcher in computational fluid dynamics, and has published numerous research articles in journals and conference proceedings. Some of his most recent research projects include CFD studies on large calibre gun muzzle brake flowfield, thrust reverser design, High-Pressure turbine blade design and transient missile release from a military aircraft. We are also supported by Major Santa Pun MBE, Major Pun is a senior advisor to Defence College. His experience in UK Military and continuing service in UK MOD means we are strategically supported by a defence professional with life long experience in defence.

Chef Monisha Bharadwaj is an award winning author, food historian and a food writer based in London, UK. Monisha is a qualified chef from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai. She started Cooking With Monisha, situated in West London, in 2004. Today it is a successful school that attracts not only the home cook but also chefs who wish to learn Chef Monisha’s brand of simple authentic Indian cooking. Monisha has also created and taught her popular courses at the Ashburton Cookery School in Devon, The Bertinet Kitchen in Bath, Seasoned Cookery School, south Derbyshire and at Divertimenti in Knightsbridge. She is often invited to judge food events and has been a judge at the Guild of Fine Food’s ‘Great Taste Awards’ for the past several years. Monisha also holds a BA in Indian History and in 2013, she was invited to be Guest Lecturer at SOAS, University of London, to give a series of talks on ‘The History of India through its Food’. In 2017, she worked with Kew Gardens giving talks on healing Indian ingredients, and with the British Council on ‘How The British Fell in Love With Curry – a historical perspective from 1200-2017’. In 2018, Monisha was invited by the Wellcome Collection, London, to talk about Ayurvedic nutrition as part of their exhibition, ‘Ayurveda Man’ and opened the South Asian Spice Box residency at Borough Market, London, with a cookery demonstration of south Indian food. In 2019, she was invited to be a Guest Speaker on Indian food on a Cookery Legends cruise around the British Isles. She was awarded ‘Cookery Writer of the Year’ in 2003 by the Guild of Food Writers and her many books have been shortlisted for and won several prestigious international awards. In 2020, her book ‘Indian in 7- recipes using 7 ingredients or fewer’ won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award 2020 for the Best Indian Cookbook in the World. Growing up in India, Monisha was brought up on an Ayurvedic inspired diet, where food brought happiness and physical well being. Today, she brings her experience of and passion for ancient Ayurvedic wisdom to all the classes she teaches.
