I am a therapeutic consultant, trainer, play therapist and supervisor who has worked across a variety of settings for over thirty years. I am able to offer a range of services and strategies to support children, families and the staff who work with them to make positive changes in their lives. I have worked as a therapeutic consultant across seven schools in Manchester, Derbyshire and Tameside since September 2010 providing play therapy, group work, staff training staff and head teacher consultation, parent consultations and parent child sessions. Along side this work I have published several articles and also written three books Understanding and Managing Children’s Behaviour Ages 3-5: A child-centred group work programme published by routledge on 5th April 2016 Understanding and Managing Children’s Behaviour Ages 7-11: A child-centred group work programme published by routledge on 7th May 2013 and Understanding and Managing Children’s Behaviour Ages 5-7: A child-centred group work programme published by routledge on 16th November 2014 I also provide individual supervision for qualified play therapists, art therapists and drama therapists. I qualified as a Play Therapist in 2004 and worked for the Calm Spaces Project in Manchester for seven years until March 2011. I worked as a Project Supervisor for the last two and half years of this which involved working as a therapist with children and families, offering regular staff consultations, delivering training to schools and provided individual and group supervision to a team of 9 therapists including Play Therapists, a Drama Therapist and Massage Therapists. In addition to the list of services I provide, I am also able to design and deliver tailor made support and training on all aspects of therapeutic work , emotional health and wellbeing and behaviors for learning, to meet the needs of individual children, families, staff and schools. I have provided consultation and contributed to the Therapeutic Standards for Schools in Manchester document which was published in November 2010. Therapy Services – Symbol has one of the largest teams of Speech and Language Therapists in the UK offering specialist assessment, intervention, training and consultancy for children and adults with special needs. In addition, Symbol also employs Social Workers, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Behavioural Therapists and Nurses in its Family Assessment Services. Symbol is increasingly deploying expertise from these valuable in-house therapeutic resources across all its activities giving Symbol a unique offer to the people who use and buy its services. Family Assessment Centre & Community Support – Symbol operates up to 10 places for parents with learning disabilities undertaking a parenting assessment and intervention service (Commissioned by the Family Law Courts and Local Authority Children’s Services) and provides 9 families with longer-term specialist parenting support in the community post-assessment. Day Opportunities (The Hopyard Services) – Symbol supports 54 people with learning disabilities in a range of meaningful activities to promote skills in work, learning and leisure operating out of 2 separate sites in Kent. Supported Living – Symbol currently supports 50 people with learning disabilities living in 15 different ordinary houses where they live as tenants. This service is growing rapidly in response to local demand. Short Breaks/Respite Care – Symbol is working with 35 young people and adults providing regular short breaks. The demand for this service is also growing. We have the facility to support up to 13 people at any one time. Community Support – Symbol supports 8 people living in their own homes on a peripatetic basis.

The Children's Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) services aim to help your child to communicate to the best of their ability. The East Cheshire Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service supports children and young people 0–16 years old, who have speech, language and communication difficulties and/ or feeding and swallowing difficulties. In order to access the service, clients must have a GP within the geographical area covered by East Cheshire NHS Trust. Speech, language and communication needs might include problems with making speech sounds, understanding and using language, stammering, voice (persistent hoarseness), social interaction skills, feeding and swallowing difficulties. The Speech and Language Therapist will assess the child/ young person's strengths and needs. The therapist will sometimes use a formal standardised assessment but may also use informal assessments i.e. observation to inform the decision making on the best way to support and develop the child/ young person’s communications skills. They will then provide advice, intervention and training if this is seen to be appropriate. The Speech and Language Therapist will work closely with parents/ carers’; discussing the child’s needs and provide coaching on ways in which to practise activities at home with their child. The Speech and Language Therapist will work collaboratively with other professions; teachers, support assistants, nursery staff or others who the child has regular contact or support from. The Speech and Language Therapist will discuss the child/ young person’s needs to help others understand the nature of the difficulties and provide them with ideas and strategies to help promote and maximise his/ her communication skills.
