THE BLACKTHORPE BARN WAS BUILT ROUND 1550, PROBABLY BY JOHN DRURY WHO HAD JUST ACQUIRED THE MANOR OF ROUGHAM THROUGH THE DISSOLUTION OF THE GREAT BENEDICTINE ABBEY AT BURY ST. EDMUNDS IN 1539. It is timber framed with a vast, striking thatched roof measuring over 30 metres long. The barn’s purpose was to be used for the threshing and storage of grain and it continued as a grain store until 1985. You can read more about the barn’s history here. These days the threshing barn and the surrounding buildings are used for events including the festive craft market at Christmas and other art exhibitions during the year, as well as for weddings in the summer months. Trained at the Royal College of Art, Chloé Rochefort is a french Mixed-Media Artist, who specialises in installation and sculpture. Inspired by our relationship to daily-use objects, she creates curious and colorful setting out of found materials, oftened displayed in public spaces, where she likes to engage dialogue with the viewers. “Community and individuals engagement are what make Art fascinating. The interaction between a public and an artist, is the real achievement” Alongside her artistic practice, she created Artists in pyjamas, a podcast with her collaborator and friend Livia Papiernik. Lately she also teamed up with four artist and designer to launch an online gallery on instagram @creating.in.crisis.

Bootle

At The Library is a programme of artist-led workshops, projects, commissions and happenings in community libraries in Bootle and Crosby. We believe that everyone has “gifts of the heart, the head and the hand” to offer to their community. Through artist-led activity, At The Library creates ways for people to share these gifts. We aim to make a new civic and cultural role for Sefton’s libraries, offering new experiences, new meeting points, new reasons to gather and ways to spend time together. Everyone is welcome and everything is free. Over the past three years, artists and library-users have co-created projects – a collaborative press archive, a Bootle tapestry, a new wallpaper, community-wide skill shares, podcasts, feasts and library-cooked lunches, and a green oasis in Bootle Library. To take part in the At The Library you can speak to one of the librarians in any of our Libraries, see the current programme on this website, or click through to find us on facebook, twitter or Instagram. Volunteers are always welcome. We have worked with artists including Ciara Phillips, Harun Morrison, Jenny Steele, Jayne Lawless, Sumuyya Khader, Sean Roy Parker, Fairland Collective, Frances Disley and Bella Milroy, alongside local historians, gardeners, community organisations and educators. At The Library is curated and produced by Rule of Threes Arts in partnership with Sefton Libraries with funding from Arts Council England and the National Lottery Community Fund.

There is a school of thought that the art of calligraphy has unique healing power. This gentle practice not only calms the mind but can also prove an escape from physical pain. It was, in fact, an accident and a period of recuperation that changed my life and set me on the path to my calligraphy career, culminating in the founding of Laura Prudence Calligraphy. As a former schoolteacher, I appreciate that being a good educator also means being an excellent learner. That’s why I chose to study under some of the U.K.’s leading calligraphers. I have worked with the world-renowned Modern Calligraphy Company known for their alliances with leading luxury brands. Additionally, I have trained under the watchful eye of Gaynor Goffe and Mary Noble, both leading tutors in calligraphic arts. I specialise in Modern Dip Pen and Modern Brush Calligraphy and the harder to master Classic Copperplate and Flourished Copperplate Calligraphy. he most common objections I hear from people who don’t have a proactive social media presence are typically either… “Our clients aren’t on social media” or “We don’t have the time, budget and/or expertise to deal with it”. So I came up with a plan to overcome all the objections and it’s a cunning plan of course… First off, unless your clients are hiding under a rock in 1977 the chances are they will be on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter. It’s a fact*.
