We first opened our doors in June 1990 in a small 3,000 ft industrial unit in Espedair Street in Paisley. The fitness industry was very much in its infancy back in those days with no other stand-alone gyms or sports clubs in the Paisley area. Pro life was very much ahead of its time and one of a kind. Alex Whelan (7 times Scottish Body Building Champion) and family friend Brian Corkindale formed a partnership to create a state-of-the-art fitness centre in the heart of Paisley. Cybex fitness equipment and Startrac cardio machines were imported from America and over £10k was invested in fitness testing equipment. The dream very quickly became a reality and Pro-Life was born. The facility in Espedair Street quickly took off and was a major success. Alex saw the potential for expansion and in Feb 1993, Pro-Life embarked on a new chapter moving to a purpose built 12,000 sq ft unit and grew from 500 to 1200 members on its opening day. The same year Brian left the business to focus on the licensed trade leaving Alex as sole owner with the ambition to grow the business to new heights. Over the years, many further expansions and improvements have taken place to develop the centre to what we see now – an amazing 30,000 sq ft health & fitness centre with a separate stand alone five-a-side football complex incorporating 5 parks, function room, sports bar and cafe. In 2014 Pro Life entered an new exciting chapter when Alex made the decision to licence the main gym to Renfrewshire Sports Charity. The business is now run by a Board of Trustees as a registered charity. All profits made from trading go to our 2 charities – The Accord and St Vincent’s Hospices as well as supporting young up and coming talented sportspeople in the Renfrewshire Area. In November 2019 Pro Life entered the National Fitness Awards for the first time and won both categories we entered – Best Gym In Scotland and UK Strength Gym of the Year – in what was a night we will never forget. A fitting tribute to all our amazing members who have supported the gym for the last 30 years in Paisley and to Alex and all the staff that have made it what it is over the last 30 years.

I invite you to take part in community events whilst discovering and benefiting from Qi Gong, Meditation, and Sound Healing As well as being good for your posture and breathing! Qi Gong is recognised as a form of preventative medicine and studies have shown that those who practice it experience less anxiety and better moods. There’s no age limit, there’s no right or wrong, there’s just a desire to take part and nourish yourself in a shared environment. Qigong embraces nature and reminds us of the rhythm of the seasons. Movement meditations are designed for the physical benefits of improving posture and breathing as well as exploring internal resistance. The philosophy of Qigong is that nature is our teacher. Each session or workshop explores how to release tension, embrace change and harness the energy of the cycle of Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. After a career in Music and the hospitality industry, I re-trained in 2010 in therapeutic sound in the community and then qualified as an instructor in Tai Chi Qi Gong. I continue to study with the Deyin institute in the practice of Tai Chi and Taoist philosophy. Having learned transcendental meditation back in the 80s, self-healing had always been of interest. Having also qualified as a masseuse I have a background in dance and a strong interest in anatomy. I continued to explore using meditation as a means of relaxation whilst incorporating sound healing and movement. My joy is working in community groups with a variety of workshops and sessions I traveled abroad in 2005 to work for a charity in Sarajevo with PTSD sufferers and took some training in this area. I felt drawn to finding ways to help people with trauma to relax and to give themselves time to heal and explore their own physical and emotional journeys. Part of finding a life balance is something we all want to explore. I found the best way for me was a mix of progression in learning as well as in giving and helping charities and worthy organisations. Here’s a list of my contributions. It’s a privilege and not always financially possible but the philosophy is that in giving we receive so it doesn’t always have to be by paying out in money.

I have been a science teacher for over 20 years and a senior leader for more than 15 years, working in multicultural and diverse schools across both Leeds and Bradford. As headteacher I have an absolute passion and commitment to inclusive education as a way of improving the life chances of young people and their families. I believe that this is done through delivering the highest quality teaching and learning, whilst developing the whole young person in terms of their character, skills and ability to show resilience to the ever changing and challenging world around them. We are an amazing special school and 6th Form with up to 150 students aged between 11 to 19 years old. Students are taught in classes of up to 12 individuals, supported by a teacher and normally at least 1 teaching assistant. Most new students join us in September in either Year 7 or Year 12 but we do admit young people into other year groups throughout the year where vacancies exist. Our students all have complex learning & additional needs (LAN) and all are supported by an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) which is reviewed annually. The majority of students join us are operating at least 3 to 4 years below chronological expectations. Our students’ additional needs include global developmental delay, autism, ADHD / ODD/ADD, anxiety, OCD, sleep apnoea, cerebral palsy, visual or hearing impairment, dyspraxia/coordination difficulties, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, chromosomal abnormalities including Down syndrome, speech, language & communication difficulties. It is our explicit aim to facilitate every opportunity to help address our students wider ‘therapeutic’ needs. Whilst some of our students have some mobility difficulties, due to the split-level nature of our site we are unable to cater for young people in wheelchairs. We describe our young people as not disabled but differently abled. We have a highly dedicated, experienced and specially trained staff team committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for every young person. We believe in building a real and lasting sense of community and belonging – we are proud of being an especially welcoming school. Feeling safe and developing positive and trusting relationships are key to our students’ success. Securing our students’ wellbeing and positive mental health is central to our provision. The Championship Course has hostedAIG Women’s Open 2021 – Carnoustie Golf Links Between 19th and 22nd August 2021 Carnoustie proudly played host to The AIG Women’s Open for the second time in 10 years, with the previous Championship being played over the famous Links in 2011. Not only has this Championship quickly grown to become the most international Major in women’s golf, it is also one of the most sought-after prizes in the industry. The 45th edition of the Championship saw Carnoustie invite the very best women golfers in the world to battle it out over Golf’s Greatest Test in an exciting week days of wonderful golf. Those who took on the challenge included Georgia Hall, Hinako Shibuno, and Danielle Kang who are true ambassadors of the game and continue to drive women’s golf forward together. Included in this list was defending AIG Women’s Open champion, Sophia Popov, who after her memorable win in 2020 continues to inspire women and girls across the world as she looked to defend her title at Carnoustie, where she made her Women’s British Open debut. It was with great delight that after a stunning 65 on the Saturday, Anna Nordqvist held her nerve in a thrilling final round to shoot 69 and triumph by one shot over Georgia Hall. Speaking during her prize giving, Anna said “Carnoustie is such a great venue and it’s been one of my favourites since I played here in 2011, and for us to be able to come back here I think is amazing and hopefully it’s not the last time the British Open comes back here.” Carnoustie has real ambitions to grow and elevate the game of golf, demonstrated by the almost 300 children taking part in The Carnoustie Craws golf development programme every week. Throughout his 30 year IT career, John has been privileged to visit many different industrial, commercial, government and military sites including steel works, car manufacturers, factories, offices, power stations, petro-chemical, and electrical, gas and water utility installations. He has completed projects throughout Europe (The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg and Switzerland) India, and the Asia Pacific Region (Cambodia, and Australia). His career started as a British Telecom apprentice in the 1980’s in the City of London and he has worked in many city financial institutions. In 1989 he left to join J.O. Grant & Taylor as a junior project manager, in 1990 he joined Electrical Installations Ltd as a project and bid manager in the structured data and voice cabling sector and worked on projects such as British Steel Scunthorpe and Redcar, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, and Cranfield Institute of Technology. Working for himself in 1996, he installed servers, switches and desktops into UK Job Centres nationwide. 1997, saw him join Computacenter as a Systems Engineer and he worked at some notable clients including Lloyds TSB, HFC Bank, Mecca Bingo, HSBC, British Energy, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Severn Trent Water to name a few. 'I set up Carbon³ IT in 2009, my own sustainable IT consultancy, providing information, products and services to clients looking to reduce energy costs and to reduce their IT impact on the environment. I wanted to take all my years of experience in other roles and incorporate it into something I was passionate about. Alongside this I did a BSc (Honours) in Technology with Environment and Development with the Open University, graduating in 2010. I am on the BCS Green IT and Data Centre specialist group committees and have taken the Foundation Certificate in Green IT, the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres, PRINCE 2 Practitioner and ITIL Foundation qualifications. I am currently part way through my Chartered IT Professional qualification. I regularly speak at events on the topic of Green IT & Data Centres and I am well known throughout the Data Centre Industry as a Sustainability Expert. Since December 2011, I have been the lead Assessor on the BCS CEEDA (Certified Data Centre Energy Efficiency Award) programme and since September 2012, I have been the reviewer of applications to become participants on the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres.'

Here’s a little bit more about them! They have 7 children ranging from 1year old to 18 years old and 3 dogs! We are very busy but have lots of family fun which is filled with laughter and love. After training as an Early Years teacher at Cambridge University, Melissa became a teacher for a couple of years and then opened Rainbow Day Nursery over ten years ago. Darren used to be involved in the building industry and changed his career in 2014 to work alongside Melissa at Rainbow Day Nursery to develop and enhance their outdoor provision as they both realised and understood the importance of this for children. They have also successfully run a Forest School programme at the nursery in their local nature reserve for almost two years. The two of them have always felt strongly about the benefits of Forest School learning. Our Team: Ond Finneran - Ond is our Nature Nursery manager. She has lots of experience with early years and forest school. Ond has her level 3 childcare qualification and has almost completed her level 3 forest school training. Her passion is the outdoors and she loves nothing more than being in the forest. Sam Hayward - Sam is our deputy at Wildawood. She has level 3 in both childcare and her level 3 forest school award. Sam loves facepainting with the mud!
