Southover Outreach services – Support in schools & Education Other Than At School (EOTAS) The Southover Partnership history The Southover Partnership was born in the summer of 1994 when Carol Frankl made the decision to start up her own company focusing on special educational needs. She launched the company from her home and named it The Southover Partnership: Southover being her place of residence; Partnership because Carol was adamant that her company would be a collaboration between all parties involved. Southover initially emerged from Carol’s disillusionment with the mechanisms for funding special needs and her passion that each child should have a positive educational experience. At the time there were many grant maintained schools that didn’t have access to local authority services due to the method of funding by central government. The Southover Partnership aimed to ensure special educational needs provision could be met. The service began by offering a select group of students support in school and some at-home tuition. It swiftly extended to providing full-time education to these students. Carol expanded Southover’s services and recruited the highest calibre staff to assist in schools as well as at home. Carol’s outstanding reputation in the education sector put her in demand to provide training and consultancy for SENCOs and schools. So great were the requests for Southover’s servicesprovisions that Carol formed her own school for children with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties and autism. The Southover Partnership school was officially recognised by the Department for Children, Schools and Families in August 2007, with the first inspection taking place in June 2008. This was a huge achievement for Carol, and a real adventure, as prior to this point much of the education for children out of school was provided by local authorities. We share the concerns raised by Arts Council England and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) about the risks faced by cultural professionals as well as the threats to cultural heritage because of this conflict and we send our support to all creative practitioners and cultural organisations and institutions affected. 5 June 2020: Stanley Picker Gallery and our partner venue Dorich House Museum recognise we must do more as cultural organisations to be actively anti-racist. We commit to taking immediate steps to implement a clear plan of action to address systemic racism at every level of our organisations, whilst actively seeking and welcoming critical engagement from diverse perspectives in this process. Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University is one of the leading university galleries and commissioning venues in the UK, working with artists, designers, students, academics and members of the local community to encourage creativity, learning, research and innovation. Established in 1997 with the ongoing support of the Stanley Picker Trust, the Gallery forms part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio and is a principal cultural interface between Kingston University and its civic communities in South-West London and beyond. She has worked on the labour wards at St Mary’s hospital, Paddington and Chelsea and Westminster hospital, as well as in paediatrics. She looks after many young families in the central London area and maintains a keen special interest in paediatrics and women’s health. She is the mother of two young children and lives in Notting Hill. Marina hosts the Eight Week Antenatal Course in South Kensington. She supports and gets to know the participants over eight weeks, supporting the professionals and providing the practical advice and skills honed as a mother. She has two children, Ludo and Iona, and in spite of tragedy, (her son Willem was stillborn in 2014) she has become motherhood’s biggest advocate. As well as teaching Bump Classes, she writes regularly for various publications including The Telegraph, The Times, Baby London and Nurture Magazine about pregnancy and motherhood. She lives with her husband, the TV presenter Ben Fogle in Notting Hill. I feel empowered by what I do and get so much joy from creating custom pleasure tools for clients that I decided to share the experience and give others the opportunity to create something fun, unique and really personal. My workshops are rewarding experience; they nurture playfulness, creativity and connection with ourselves and others. Yes, we’re putting enamel decals on porcelain sex toys but these workshops are so much more than the sum of their parts. They push people’s boundaries and challenge preconceptions in a gentle, fun, and creative way, encouraging a healthy attitude toward sexuality and ownership over our own pleasure. What to expect. A warm, welcoming atmosphere. Because we use a range of pre-printed enamel decals, no artistic ability is required. Spaces are limited but everyone is welcome regardless of artistic ability. I don't specify that all the workshops are women only but that tends to be the case. The workshop lasts around 3.5 hours and once decorated, the handmade dildo needs to dry for 24 - 48 hours before being enamel fired and shipped in the post. It’s amazing to see what people create with the same resources; there is always so much diversity and it's wonderful to see my dildos embellished with your creative designs. Prosecco, light refreshments and treats and return postage are included in the workshop fee. Studio vibes. During the workshops, conversations amble from the intimate, to playful, emotional, insightful, and uplifting; everyone who attends has a different story and fresh perspective. It’s humbling to share the afternoon with so many inspiring women (and sometimes men!) creating together. One of my past participants said that it was like therapy for her and I guess it is for all of us in some way. Every person leaves feeling like they've formed a connection with each other and some even stay in touch after the session - it’s such an awesome feeling to see the workshops creating a community. Flexible Booking Many people who sign up for our wine tasting courses on weekday evenings lead busy lives, working under pressure and travelling on business, often at short notice. We understand the problem. If you have to miss a course session, you may either send a substitute or pick up that session on a subsequent course. Just let us know and we will make the arrangements. We make no charge for this and set no time limit! Impartial Advice Many wine tastings and wine tasting courses are run by wine merchants. Nothing wrong with that. It’s a great way to get potential customers into their stores and promote sales of their wines. We are not wine merchants. We don’t sell wine. We are not paid by any wine merchant to promote their wines. So, at our wine tastings and on our wine courses, you will never come under any pressure to buy wine. The wines we select for you to taste are intended to illustrate the main points of the wine course session or the theme of the wine tasting. We hope you will enjoy most of the wines we give you to taste but don’t necessarily expect you to enjoy them all. Your course tutor will help you to understand what makes a wine enjoyable. We are a leading London maternity hospital and care for more than 8,000 pregnant women and birthing people and their babies each year. We provide all aspects of obstetric and midwifery care, from before conception and before birth (antenatal) to birth and after delivery (postnatal). The majority of pregnant women and people will be cared for by our expert team of midwives who are experienced in supporting those with uncomplicated pregnancies and births. When your circumstances are more complex, our specialist obstetric doctors and allied health professionals will work alongside your midwife to give you the care and support your need to have a safe and satisfying birth. You will have your own ideas about how you would like your baby to be born – whether at home or in hospital – and we do our best to help you to achieve this. We have obstetric-led birthing rooms, midwife-led birth suites with birth pools, obstetric theatres for both planned and emergency caesareans, and a homebirth service. Are you pregnant and want to have your baby with King's? You do not have to see your GP before contacting us. Please complete the King's College Hospital antenatal self-referral form to refer yourself and send to kch-tr.antenatalreferral@nhs.net. We will then email you with a reference number to confirm we have received your referral. Your first appointments with the midwife and scanning team will be sent to you either via post or email. You will be offered routine health checks such as blood tests and other screenings, you can read more about the different scans, tests and antenatal care you can expect on the NHS website. Your screening choices are explained in this screening information leaflet, which is produced by Public Health England and available in several languages. We also provide care if screening finds you have an infectious disease, including Hepatitis B, HIV or syphilis. Badger Notes You can access your pregnancy notes and leaflets via the Badger Notes website or app. Your account will be activated after your first midwife appointment. You can use the digital maternity notes platform to communicate with your care team and we recommend you use the ‘Conversations’ option to share your birth preferences with us before your birth. Your midwife can help you with this. Clinic and scan locations Read your appointment letter carefully to see where to go for your appointments, because these are held at a variety of locations. This includes children’s centres, GP and health centres, and a number of buildings on the King's site, including Stork on the Hill, Midwives House and the Community Midwives Centre. Parent education classes We offer a range of online workshops to help prepare you for birth and baby. Join the 'Welcome to King’s Maternity' workshop in your first trimester to learn more about how to stay healthy in pregnancy, the services we offer, and other workshops that may be suitable for you. Urgent advice If you need urgent advice and are: pregnant and currently receiving care at King's; have just given birth at King's; or have had a home birth with King's: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: Telephone Assessment Line +44 (0)20 3299 8389 Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm: contact the midwifery team leading your care Out of hours: contact the Nightingale Birth Centre. Where to give birth You can choose to give birth: in the Nightingale Birth Centre at King’s at home with the help of our community-based midwives, if you live in King’s catchment area. Our Maternity Department is on the third and fourth floors of the Golden Jubilee Wing and includes the Nightingale Birth Centre. Our facilities include 10 labour rooms, operating theatres, recovery rooms and a high dependency unit (HDU). Midwife-led birthing suite You have the choice of two midwife-led birthing rooms, each with a birthing pool and their own shower and toilet, where we have created a ‘home from home’ feel for your birth environment. Homebirth Our home birth midwife team (called Phoenix) provide a home birth service within the King’s catchment area. If you are interested in this option, indicate this on your antenatal self-referral form, or contact your community midwife. We will support women and birthing people to make informed choices about where they would like to birth their babies. There may be instances when a home birth might not be recommended, and your midwife or doctor can discuss these with you. Neonatal Unit Babies who need special care are looked after in the Neonatal Unit by our specialist team, it is located opposite Nightingale Birth Centre on the fourth floor of Golden Jubilee Wing. Anthony Nolan umbilical cord blood donation If you give birth at King’s College Hospital, you can help save the life of someone with blood cancer by donating your umbilical cord blood to the Anthony Nolan Cord Blood Programme after you give birth. We are one of five hospitals in the UK where women can donate their umbilical cords. Please watch this short animation about donating your cord blood. If you would like to register to donate cord blood, please speak with your midwife or one of the dedicated cord blood collectors at King’s College Hospital. If you have any questions about cord blood donation, please get in touch with the team at Anthony Nolan: Cord.Collection@anthonynolan.org After the birth (postnatal) If everything with your birth has been uncomplicated we encourage you to go home within a few hours. You can contact the maternity unit at any time day or night if you have any concerns. If you or your baby needs to stay in hospital for additional care you will be transferred to William Gilliatt postnatal ward for the remainder of your stay. This ward contains four-bedded bays and shared bathrooms. You and your baby room in together and birth partners are able to visit 24 hours a day. Going home Our care does not stop once you are at home. When you leave King’s you should have a visit from your community midwife within 24 hours. They will plan visits with you over the next 10 days. If you live outside King’s area your details will be passed to your local community midwives who will take over your care. If you would like support with breastfeeding, we have specialist infant feeding midwives who offer virtual workshops and in-person support via referral from your community midwife. Feedback Friends and Family You can tell us what you did and didn’t like about your care by completing the Friends and Family feedback form, it only takes a couple of minutes and you can comment on your antenatal, birth and postnatal ward or postnatal community care. PALS The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is a service that offers support, information and assistance to patients, relatives and visitors. They can also provide help and advice if you have a concern or complaint that staff have not been able to resolve for you.
