Well Minerva was the Goddess of Art & Trade and she seemed a very appropriate figurehead for a business based around sharing knowledge about art. What do we do? Our interests. We stock Annie Sloan & Polyvine Paints - available for Click & Collect. Founded by Artist Lottie Cole we host masterclasses taught by artists and artisans as well as regular weekly classes. All the classes are taught by professional full-time practitioners, who love to share their knowledge and skill. The classes are open to all levels, unless stated, and kept to a very limited number. This keeps the classes intimate and allows for everyone to have sufficient help and encouragement in a friendly atmosphere. As well as learning and expanding skills our goal is to send participants away refreshed and invigorated by sharing a creative experience. The School is accredited by the New York City and the New York State Board of Education. INCEPTION AND GROWTH On the orders of Ayatollah al-Khoei, Al-Iman School in New York opened its doors to four children in September 1990; with that it started an evolutionary process that, within four years, resulted in the first fully fledged Pre K-12 Islamic school in North America. The growth from Kindergarten to Grade School to Junior High to High School can only be described as phenomenal. Every year, between 1990-1994 several grades were added simultaneously as applications poured in, pregnant mothers registered their children and waiting lists grew by the day. In September 1994, Al-Iman School added the high school component and in 1998 the first class of seniors – a historic moment – graduated to go to various reputable universities and colleges such as Stony Brook, St John’s, Columbia, New York University, Baruch etc. in the country. Here we are again in December with all the pressure that comes with it. The temperature has changed, the light has changed, the music on the radio has changed and the lights and decorations up everywhere are telling us of the joy to come, but we have to grind our way there. Grind our way through it and remember that not everyone is going to have a plentiful Christmas. We move towards it with restrained excitement and know that our foodbank collections and distribution will probably mean as much as at any time in recent years. 8W got stuck into The Samaritans Shoe Box appeal and managed to fill and send 9 shoe boxes for girls and boys for all age ranges from the wonderful donations received. The class are tracking them and we look forward with them to see where they end up. We know it’s a huge thing to receive one of these boxes in the target countries. Year 11’s are currently in the thick of their paper 1 mock exams and doing well, giving it a real go. We had the Functional Skills Reading paper results for a group of them yesterday and were thrilled to discover 9 out of 13 passed and one pupil missed out on a pass by only one mark. The results of the Writing Paper taken last week will be a little slower in arriving but we hope for a similar level of success. The paper 2 mocks will be in January and will help to prepare the pupils for the GCSE exams proper in May and June in 2023. There are planned trips to the Christmas markets and around the County to see some cultural sites in the next two weeks, but we are still full gas as we approach the end of term. The Daily Yellow news sheet continues to provide interesting reading for our community. The tutor teams have done a great job in producing it these last 6 weeks especially.

I have the privilege of heading up two incredible organisations – Progress Schools and Progress Careers – who work in very different ways, but with the very same objective and under one umbrella – Progress Education. At Progress Schools, we currently have thirteen independent secondary schools, located throughout England, who support local authorities and mainstream schools to work with young people who require an alternative approach to their education. Many students have diagnosed/undiagnosed SEND/SEMH and have likely experienced the trauma of a permanent exclusion from at least one mainstream school. Through our incredible workforce of teachers, engagement mentors, welfare officers and alike, we ensure a truly rounded curriculum that is delivered in a nurturing and supportive way, enable us to identify the potential and ambitions of our young people and work with them to support them to access those opportunities when they leave us at the end of year 11. In 2019, The Timpson Review of School Exclusions identified that more than half of young people who access alternative provision (AP) or PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) type settings become NEET (not in education, employment or training) when they leave school. Every year since our inception in 2016, we have supported more than 80% of our students progress into a positive destination when they leave us after year 11. This has also supported us to achieve consecutive ‘good’ judgements in every one of our Ofsted inspections. At Progress Careers (formerly CareersInc), we currently work with more than 60 secondary schools and academies, including multi academy trusts, to provide an exception careers guidance service. Our team of Level 6 and Level 7 qualified independent careers advisers, work with the students across each of these schools to provide that personalised guidance that they require to enable them to make the choices that recognise their potential and raise their ambitions. We work with schools and academies to support the full integration of Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) throughout their curriculum, enabling a whole school approach to be implemented. Across both organisations, under the one umbrella of Progress Education, our mission remains the same – we raise the ambitions and aspirations of our young people supporting them to achieve their full potential.”
