CoCo has a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to building confidence, self-esteem and support positive lifestyle changes in young people via the conduits of education, sport and culture. Our staff have a background in mentoring and life coaching, project management, social inclusion, vocational training, and sports coaching. Our community based values are manifested in our training activities in the classroom, and our team activities which take place in positive open spaces and parks around Brighton and Hove. CoCo works with a variety of local organisations and stakeholders to achieve its goals and deliver its activities. For example, we work directly with youth clubs, Job Centre Plus, and youth/employment networks (Brighton’s Women’s Centre, the Chamber of Commerce, Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, and The Platform) to engage directly with young people that are interested in career planning, job search, our vocational courses, or sport team building activities. We also have close ties with sports clubs such as Hassocks Tennis Club, Preston Park Tennis Club, Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club, Preston Panthers FC, Withdean FC and Patcham FC. With these clubs we organise team building events, joint sports days and in house training to develop soft and employability skills via sport. Our team has worked with hundreds of young people across Sussex to provide vocational training, mentoring and employability training. Our reach is growing and in 2017 hope to reach even more young people. Specifically, our qualified staff provide VET courses such as City and Guilds Level 1 Principles of Coaching Sport, Level 1-2 Employability Skills and Level 2 Travel and Tourism Destinations. We also provide Coaching and Mentoring Sessions with a qualified life coach, cultural activities and overseas team sports tours in Europe. Our aim is to support young people not in employment, education or training, aged 18-24, early school leavers now long term unemployed, general unemployed young people, and we place special emphasis on the participation of young women and the more socially excluded members of society. We use our links with local colleges, the local authority, community groups and youth networks to support young people into vocational training, improve their confidence and support them into further vocational training, work experience or employment. Where we started Need often finds a way to drive an idea, sometimes further than we all expect, and Bounce Back was just such an idea. In 2011 we started a small painting and decorating social enterprise, with the sole purpose of employing people who were coming out of prison. Recruitment was done through interviews in the prison and the first team of 5 people were commissioned to start off by re-building and decorating our offices. They did a very creative job despite the rather erratic grouting and a few hitches with the quality of electrical fitting and we were all delighted. When other people asked if they could use the decorators we would point out that the team had just left prison and clients would say ‘if its ok with you its ok with us’ and that was when we realised we could change perception by endorsing people, giving people trust and putting our belief in them. As the work grew, clients wanted decorating but also wanted to make a difference and we quickly realised that there was an opportunity to do more including training people to be ready for work. Anyone who starts a charity tends to believe in serendipity and the passion for what we choose to do enables us to circumnavigate barriers and overlook obstacles. ‘Outcomes’ were not something we’d ever heard of and simply delivering success for the guys leaving prison was all we wanted to achieve. Fate and amazing people along the way stepped in. HMP Wandsworth supported our recruitment, The London Probation Trust helped us, we were given guidance to set up training and then we were lucky enough to be given a building for a year in which to flourish. Finally, through the support of our decorating clients we were working all the time and thanks to some amazing organisations, the first of which was Axis, we started to grow. We always knew that through the power of skills training and a job, we could make a difference and see change in our participants. However, we also realised early on that change could only come with support for the individuals, which led to our case management team working with individuals for as long as they need it when they leave prison and are go into work.

The Limehouse Project was founded in 1984 as a housing association by three social pioneers: Suzy Powlesland, former Head Teacher of Sir William Borough School, Dennis Twomey, former councillor for Tower Hamlets, and Myra Garrett, a social worker who continues to work on behalf of minority communities today. Although initially launched to house local homeless families, our workers and founders soon recognised a dire need within local minority communities for access to basic advice services. Following a disbanding of the original Limehouse Project to make way for the Labo Housing Association, we were once again re-established for the specific purpose of helping local communities receive the help and advice they need. Since then, the Limehouse Project has become a beacon of advice and guidance for a wide variety of peoples stemming from all walks of life. From elderly people facing isolation and ill health to young people in need of a mentor, our Advice and Training & Development Teams work hard to enhance the daily lived experiences of communities throughout Tower Hamlets.

We offer the Certificate in Finance Business Analysis (FinBA) program, and financial designation. In addition, we run the Coding (Python, SQL) in Finance Certificate program. We are fully accredited by The CPD Certification Service (same accreditation as the world-renowned Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) program). We are a community hub, though we do, of course, provide a full library service with a whole world of books, we also offer activities for people of all ages each week. We have big ideas for the future and our staff and volunteers have a big heart to see our space used in a way that impacts Blackfen for good. Rooted Coffee House, our café, is a central part of the library, providing an amazing space in which we run various activities and events that bring our community together. You can also hire this bright and unique space for your events and celebrations or just come and enjoy a catch-up with family, friends or chat with one of our volunteers!
