Join me at the Big Penny Social for a special evening of hand stitching. Make a mini quilt with me, using my fabric, threads, tools and techniques. Everyone will come away with a cool hand made piece of quilting that may just be the start of your quilting journey! Modern quilting is absolutely nothing like the beige and fussy textile we often associate with the word. Using monochrome or brightly coloured fabric, interesting patterns, oversized shapes, negative space, modern quilting is fun and funky and joyous. The class is two hours long and everything you need is included.

In this private workshop, you'll learn the basics of knitting using a vintage knitting machine to create wearable textiles.  🧶What is machine knitting & who invented it?  The knitting machine was invented by Englishman William Lee in 1589 to make stockings. it's a very small manual machine that enables the maker to create fine, fast knitting. Machine knitting was one of the first major stages in the textile industry that led to the Industrial Revolution. It’s still in use today but unfortunately, it’s become a forgotten craft! So we’re here to bring it back! During this creative and therapeutic class your teacher Valeria will guide you through designing and making your own knitted artwork. You'll learn how to use the vintage knitting ‘machine’ and listen to the wonderful sound it produces as the needles move. The process of machine knitting enables you to have full control over your design. Many people find machine knitting therapeutic and relaxing as you can watch and listen to your artwork come to life. Not only that the results look like those of an expert (even for absolute beginners). 🧶What can you make? It’s smooth, quick performance is perfect for making a range of knits – from home accessories to stylish garments - knit long trendy scarves, and quirky tote bags in under 3 hours… Smaller items only take minutes to do. Valeria will work with you to design and make what you want. All materials and tools are included and your artwork is yours to take home and wear with pride. 🧶Why use a knitting Machine over hand-held? Unlike hand knitting, the beauty of using a domestic knitting machine is that you can knit fast and use much finer yarns to create wearable textiles with a professional artistic finish. There will be far fewer mistakes making it less stressful & it’s super fast.  Your teacher Valeria is an experienced designer/maker with a passion for knitwear. She has worked in a high-end knitwear design studio and as a fashion buyer and now she makes kids and adult knitwear @maluk_knitwear (maluk meaning little one in Ukrainian). It focuses on the drawing and repeating pattern capabilities of illustrator. It would also be useful for tile designers or for anyone interested in learning how to create incredible drawings and repeating patterns with Illustrator.

This is a work-based learning qualification for those involved in laying floorcoverings in a Construction related working environment. Although many of the skills and knowledge across floorcovering occupations are generic, not all those employed to fit floorcoverings will be fitting the same product. The group of optional units will allow specialisms of timber based, textile and resilient floorcoverings. What is required from candidates? To achieve this pathway unit the survey work must be carried out in ways that will minimise the risk of damage to the work and surrounding area and using and maintaining equipment effectively. This qualification is made up of 9 mandatory units and a group of optional units. The minimum credit value of this qualification is 127 credits. Qualifications are now required to indicate the total qualification time (TQT), this is to show the typical time it will take someone to attain the required skills and knowledge to meet the qualification criteria, this qualification has a TQT of 1,270 hours. Qualifications are also required to indicate the number of hours of teaching someone would normally need to gain the skills and knowledge to achieve the qualification. These are referred to as Guided Learning Hours (GLH). The Knit Club is a workshop by Craft Forward structured like a relaxed and welcoming knitting and crochet group, open to beginners and experienced makers to come together, connect, and assemble our blankets for the “Blankets for London” project. “Blankets for London” is Craft Forward’s seasonal project where we assemble blankets to donate to homeless individuals in London through our partner charities. The Knit Club is open to anyone interested in approaching crafting and textile art for the first time and to any creative who would like an opportunity to make together and connect with other makers. What to bring: all materials are provided! I want to participate in "Blankets for London": our mailbox is now CLOSED for Blankets for London 2023. Thank you so much for having participating!
