The Miller Foundation is committed to investing our resources to give children living within these high-need neighborhoods the opportunity to flourish, develop, and reach their full potential. Foundation funding will be primarily directed to programs that address issues within our three focused program areas that impact children in these identified vulnerable neighborhoods of greater Long Beach. Long Beach, the 7th largest city in California, is on one hand a city of great resources: culturally rich, boasting beautiful ecological features, and home to esteemed higher educational institutions. On the other hand, it is a city of great needs: facing high levels of poverty and its multiple effects, environmental pollution, and rising housing costs. Over the years, Long Beach has become “a tale of two cities,” where certain neighborhoods are characterized by the benefits and resources of affluence and other neighborhoods are bearing the brunt of low incomes, decreased resources, and the challenges of communities of poverty. *Slides & facts courtesy of the Long Beach Community Action Partnership, LBCAP.org Long Beach’s areas of affluence—concentrated primarily on the east side of Long Beach– are characterized by high annual median family incomes, longer life expectancy, higher employment levels, and overall community safety. Children have access to a vast array of resources that promote their development including high-quality schools and after-school enrichment programs of diverse types, excellent access to health care, and safe spaces to grow up and recreate. Areas of critical need are concentrated primarily within North, West Central, and Southwest Long Beach. These neighborhoods experience high levels of poverty, exposure to environmental pollutants, and low levels of educational attainment. Families and children in these areas face great barriers in accessing health care resources, support in early education and educational attainment, and affordable arts programming. These neighborhoods also contain the largest concentration of children in the city.

The Society of Saint Pius X is an international society of priests dedicated to the maintenance and celebration of the Traditional Catholic Mass. Its main purpose is the formation and support of priests who conduct apostolic work in schools and parishes all over the world. The worthy celebration of Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is a central tenet of Catholic spirituality. Our apostolic activity is centred around the Holy Sacrifice and all that pertains to it and our dedication to the formation of priests comes of devotion to the Mass. In 1991, in answer to families seeking a good Catholic education for their children, a small boarding school was opened in Hampshire. Staff and children were, and continue to be, able to experience the unique privilege of a Catholic environment centred around Holy Mass. With the passage of time, families and faithful have moved to the area, desirous of regular access to the sacraments. With the permanent presence of priests and religious, the school community has grown and developed into a thriving Catholic parish centred around the Tridentine Mass - the largest of its kind in the U.K. The small school chapel has long become insufficient to cater for the needs of the ever-growing number of souls in need of pastoral care. It has become urgent to relieve the school from the demands of parish ministry and to provide a dedicated space for parish growth. With over 40 baptisms in the past 3 years, it is time to rise to the challenge. We wish to build a church worthy of the Divine Guest Who seeks to give Himself to souls, a church where everyone can come to visit Him Who resides within. St. Michael’s forms the largest traditional Catholic community in the country and yet it has no church. The project is underway to give God a new house and home.

I work as a wellbeing coach and specialist autism support worker guiding, supporting and empowering the people I work with to live the best lives they can. I aim to be a a catalyst in individuals transformation, ushering souls towards their fullest potential and most authentic and integrated versions of self. I believe that every person has the potential to actualise a life with wellbeing, purpose and deep meaning at the forefront; with the right resources, support and self-belief anything is possible. My Integrative Wellbeing Coaching approach comes from a belief that a holistic approach to wellbeing through combining physical, emotional and spiritual well-being is vital to improved long-term wellbeing. I am a 500hr qualified yoga and meditation instructor, with a passion for spirituality and related practices. I have worked in various settings that inform how I work. My work with the charity S.A.N.E on a mental health helpline and W.I.S.H (women in secure hospitals) gave me a deep understanding of lived experiences of mental health. My time in various community settings both in youth and adult services offering support and wellbeing services, has developed my awareness of the factors from our childhood and youth as well as socio-economic and environmental factors that inform the adults we become. In recent year my interest has been in working with individuals and groups to get deeper into the work of creating transformation in their hearts and lives. My practice is informed by my own journey through mental health challenges and addiction recovery. Its my lived experience that gives me a genuine compassion, directness and approachability. Alongside my wellbeing work I work as a Specialist Autism Support Worker with the National Autistic Society. I am passionate about working with the unique strengths and challenges of neuro-diversity, having pursued a late diagnosis of ASD myself in 2017.

"When I was 13 I relocated from Leeds to London to take up a full time scholarship place at the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School, I received some of the best training and opportunities a young girl could wish for. After finishing school I was fortunate enough to be chosen for another full time scholarship place at Millennium Dance 2000 College for 3 years performing arts training. Even with all this incredible training I still look back fondly at the small performing arts school I attended one night a week in Leeds : Scala Kids. I owe a lot of my skills to the training I received there and would look forward to going to my classes every week without the pressure of taking exams or doing competitions. I was made to feel like part of the "Scala" family and felt free to be creative and express my talents. This is how I want the Theatre Skills Academy to be- a place where kids can come to be creative, build confidence, feel equal, learn new skills, improve their talents, and have FUN. Amplify is a training and development consultancy led by Tom Burke. Founded in 2003, amplify provides services primarily to the voluntary sector with a focus on children and youth issues both in the UK and in the Global South. Tom has an extensive history of personal, professional and voluntary work with children and young people and the wider voluntary sector. From a child involved in youth work and global child rights advocacy, he developed skills and experience as a practitioner and advocate. He can bring this mix of experiences into work as a trainer, writer and consultant. Most recently, Tom was Deputy Chief Executive at Y Care International, the international development agency of the YMCA movement. He led their International Citizen Service youth volunteering programme, safeguarding & security, global youth work, policy & advocacy and financial management. Working part-time this was balanced with a range of freelance projects. Previously, Tom grew up in the youth and child rights movement. As a young activist, he was a member of the steering group of the Child Rights Caucus at the UN Special Session on Children and director of social enterprise ‘Young People Change the World’. He was engaged in local youth participation initiatives creating platforms for young people to be heard or to access services, including in sexual health and children in care. Tom was Chair of Trustees of youth-focussed international development charity Peace Child International. He was previously Senior Policy and Change Officer at the Children’s Rights Alliance for England, where he specialised in children’s participation rights, undertaking policy analysis, Parliamentary lobbying and campaigning for change. Over the past 15 years, he has undertaken consultancy for a range of clients on projects ranging from safeguarding, inclusion, evaluation and research projects, training and direct delivery.

Touch Typing is an essential life skill and we find that children who learn accurately to literally type without looking at their fingers, will save time in producing homework and in exams etc. As experienced Specialist Teachers, we are able to effectively differentiate and individualise touch typing challenges so that all students achieve their potential. Multi-sensory learning, through games and incentives, create a brilliantly fun atmosphere in which children aged 7 upwards, thrive! We have children who want to learn good basic typing skills and those who need this skill in order to type for GCSEs, and A Level exams. Note taking, punctuation skills and real time typing under pressure are also explored with the advanced students. An encouraging, motivating and uplifting environment is created in which children of all learning abilities thrive. We specialise in helping children with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and hypermobility as well as for those just want to learn it as a life skill, or for application towards the skill section of the DofE levels. Our testimonies tell of children literally loving the courses to such an extent, that they often come back time and time again, bringing their siblings and friends for follow up courses!
