As Headteacher I seek to lead the school with this at the heart and ask students to respect themselves, others and the environment. Our students gain excellent examination results in both GCSE and across the Sixth Form. In our most recent inspection Ofsted again rated the school as “good”. Equally, the school is very proud of the way it has achieved these outcomes and the rounded education it offers to its students. We recognise our place in the community and are a key part of the partnership, Kingsbury Schools Together with our local primary schools and the Village (special) School. A great school is a combination of different things. We are equally proud of the many opportunities we provide for our students beyond the curriculum and how we develop students as individuals ready for adult life. Our aim is to develop in all of our students the love of learning, intellectual curiosity, skills and qualities of character needed to become successful, happy and engaged members of society. I’m Monique Shaw, a career coach, writer, podcaster and brand expert who helps people to rewrite their old stories to create careers, businesses and lives that work. Our stories shape our lives - but we can rewrite them. I started my career in the arts and public sector before pivoting into the corporate world where I spent over a decade shaping marketing, brand, sales and communication strategies. I spent 8 of those years with a Big 4 firm working on rebrand projects, running global campaigns, coaching pitch teams and leading a global sector brand & marketing team. After becoming a parent, I craved a deeper sense of purpose in my work and a different lifestyle. When I turned 40, I took the plunge and rewrote my career story, launching Re/Write and bringing together my love of people, words and self-development with the rigour of my global corporate experience and training. My approach to career change is to work from the inside-out. I don’t focus on job titles, industries or company names, instead I help people to connect with who they are, what they need and how they want to live. We build out from that foundation, right through to creating new habits and shaping the story they tell the world. I’m a qualified Transformational Coach with an accreditation in Group Coaching & Facilitation. I’m a lifelong learner with a Fine Arts undergrad degree, a post-grad in Creative Writing and professional Chartered Institute of Marketing qualifications in Marketing and Digital Marketing. All of these qualifications - along with my professional and personal experience - informs the work I do helping my clients to rewrite their stories. I also work with a not-for-profit organisation, icanyoucantoo running presentation skills and personal brand workshops for smart and ambitious kids form disadvantaged backgrounds because they - like all of us - deserve to write their own stories too. Originally from Australia, I live in London with my husband, young son and 2 rescue pooches. Welcome to Prendergast School. It is an honour and a privilege to be Prendergast School’s eleventh Headteacher and to work with staff, students and families. Staff here are passionate about ensuring the very best opportunities and education for all students. Our motto and ethos is ‘Truth, Honour, Freedom and Courtesy.’ We are all on the same side, working to support all students to excel. We take pride in building strong relationships with students and their families. We have a long history of providing exceptional education to young people. We were founded in 1880 as Prendergast Grammar School for Girls on a site in Catford provided by the Leathersellers’ Company, which then funded the school’s move to its current site in 1995. We are now part of the Leathersellers’ Federation of schools, a group of three secondary and two primary schools as well as Prendergast 6th Form. We are very fortunate to be part of the Federation and receive a lot of support from the Leathersellers’ Company, that helps our students succeed. We are very proud of our last Ofsted judgement of Outstanding in all areas, our third Outstanding judgement in a row. We are described in the most recent report as ‘exceptional’ and having ‘exemplary attitudes to learning’ across the school. We do achieve great academic results at Prendergast School (more information is on the website). However, as a parent or carer you also want to know that your child is happy and safe. This is very important to us and we pride ourselves that students feel confident in school and thrive under our care. It is important that when students leave after their time with us that they do so as well-rounded individuals who have had many different experiences, able to overcome challenges and most importantly to learn from their mistakes. It is important that students get involved in school life as much as possible. We have a wide range of extra-curricular activities and we do encourage all students to get involved. Founded in 2006, Real Chinese Academy has been working towards all-around “student development, teacher development and school development”, upholding the principle of “quality-first”, and implementing the philosophy of integrating cultural awareness into language learning. In the past decade or so, we have enabled many students to acquire a broad knowledge of Chinese culture, and practical skills of using the Chinese language. At the same time, our team of dedicated teachers have raised their professionalism to a new level. Real Chinese Academy is going from strength to strength. To ensure high-quality teaching results, we group students based on their age, level of Chinese language and family background (native/non-native Chinese speaker). All teachers utilise multimedia method and self-designed entertaining materials to facilitate teaching and enhance students’ achievements. Wechat and WhatsApp chat groups for parents are created to strengthen parent-teacher communications. At the same time, we hold regular parents meetings to discuss students’ progress at school while listening to parents’ feedbacks. Homework and assignments will be published on our website to make it easier for parents to supervise their children. Besides Chinese language teaching, we are honoured to have a world-class renowned artist, Mr. Sheng Qi, to lead our Visual arts course. In addition, English actress Helen Hobson teaches our Public Speaking course, and dozens of students have achieved excellent results in LAMDA exams which lay the foundation for all-round development of students. Headmistress Ms. Zoe Xu, originally from Beijing, is a mother of two. She is well versed in the comparative research of Chinese and British education as well as family education. In the last two decades, she has written books related to education such as Please Don’t Do This to Your Children, Chinese Orphans and Their Foreign Parents, Alternative Route to Development, Ten Skills That Affect Your Child’s Fortune. All the titles are published in mainland China. Real Chinese is growing! From only six pupils at the very beginning for Mandarin only, we’ve grown to be two hundred strong. Every year some of our students take GCSE Chinese and each of them achieved A* grade. Real Chinese have developed from simple teaching to a broader field of education. The school has found a successful way of managing the Chinese language education as the core while valuing all-around education. The road ahead will be long and rugged, yet we shall search high and low, for the benefit of the community and the promotion of the Chinese language and culture.
