About this Training Course  This five-day course provides an intermediate level of understanding of the geomechanical factors that affect wellbore instability, sand production and hydraulic fracture design. The course is structured such that upon completion, participants will have understood the value that geomechanics can bring to drilling, completion and production operations and will be able to leverage this value wherever it applies. The course emphasis will be on integrating the topics presented through a combination of lectures, case-studies and hands-on exercises. A special focus will be on how geomechanics knowledge is extracted from routinely acquired well data and how it is applied in the prediction and prevention of formation instability. Trainer Your Expert Course Instructor is an operational geomechanics advisor with over 46 years of experience in exploration, development and production in the upstream oil and gas industry. After obtaining a BSc (Hons) Physics degree from Aberdeen University, he worked for a variety of oil service companies in wireline operations, management and formation evaluation, before joining Schlumberger in 1995. Since 2000 he has worked principally in real-time geomechanics operations and developing acousto-geomechical applications, taking on the role of geomechanics advisor and technical manager within the Europe-Africa area of operations. Before forming his own company in 2014, Your Expert Course Instructor was one of Schlumberger's principal instructors, delivering cross-discipline internal and external geomechanics training to petrophysicists, geologists, reservoir, petroleum, well construction and drilling engineers at operating company locations, training centers and operational centers worldwide. Through extensive operational and wellsite experience gained in the North Sea, Europe, Africa, South America and the Far East, he has gained a broad based knowledge of drilling, production, log data acquisition, analysis and interpretation that has allowed him to develop and deliver pragmatic solutions to the geomechanical challenges of drilling, sand production, fracturing and unconventional reservoirs, faced by operators. About this Training Course This 5 full-day course is aimed at engineers and supervisors who already have a basic understanding of well construction methods but who would benefit from a more detailed knowledge of completion design. The course will concentrate on the important aspects of completion design and what makes a safe and efficient well. A common thread of practical examples will be used throughout the course in the form of a case study or 'red-thread' exercise. The case study is based around data all taken from a single field where those attending will work through all the basic issues of a completion design. The exercises associated with the case study is performed in the student's own time after each of the formal sessions. However, at the start of the next day, the case study is reviewed and discussed. The whole case study will continue through all sessions, with each element being reviewed at the start of the next session. There is no 'right' answer to the exercise - producing interesting discussions! The purpose of the course is not to go over specific equipment in detail. Teaching methods include presentations, videos, and animations and the case study. The course will cover: Types and configurations of completions The completion design process Inflow performance, skin and formation damage Perforating; selection, deployment and interface with rest of completion Stimulation and impact on completion and flow performance with coverage of modern horizontal multifrac tools Open hole, non-sand control completions including open hole packers and horizontal well clean up Sand control; when do you need it, basic types and selection guidelines. You will spend the day using real forensic methods and techniques to perform a range of established crime scene investigations. All investigations that you perform are "hands-on", giving you the opportunity to learn how these procedures work in real life. Your day will include: DRUG TESTING: Perform a drugs test! The suspect was carrying a small plastic bag of a white substance when arrested. He was known to police as a cocaine dealer. Was he carrying cocaine? Carry out chemical tests to establish if the white powder was cocaine? FINGERPRINTING: Learn how to lift and record fingerprints using the conventional dusting process to detect and preserve fingerprints. MICROSCOPY: Use a light microscope to forensically examine crime scene samples. Discover how to use different magnifying powers to optimise the results. FABRIC SAMPLE ANALYSIS: Compare samples collected at the crime scene and on the suspect to identify human hairs. SOIL ANALYSIS: Analyse soil samples collected from the crime scene and compare against soil recovered from the suspect's shoes. Identify which soil sample is common between both crime scene and suspect. Use chemical tests to confirm your results. TOOL MARK IDENTIFICATION: You have a known tool impression from the crime scene. Use forensic casting techniques to create clay impressions and compare with a range of tools recovered from the suspect's tool shed. Which tool did he use? BLOOD DETECTION: Blood-like stains were found at the crime scene. Before sending samples to the forensic lab we need to establish if they are blood samples. Use established forensic tests and procedures to identify blood spots and stains that may not be visible to the naked eye. DNA EXTRACTION: Perform an extraction procedure to extract DNA from samples provided. You will be able to see (and feel) actual DNA once you have completed the process!
