Finance for project managers and engineers (In-House)

By The In House Training Company

What do engineers and project managers need to know of finance? 'Nothing - leave it to the accountants!' No, no, no! Engineers must be conversant with the terminology and statements that accountants use. Technical expertise in projects, service delivery, production or other areas can only really be harnessed if the managers understand the accounting and reporting that drives businesses. This course gives the necessary understanding to project, production and technical managers. It develops their skills in understanding financial and management accounting. Accountants may not always like it but a major part of their work is to be the 'servants of business' and to gather, compile and present your figures. So you must understand the figures - they belong to you, your processes or projects. There are many reasons for maintaining accurate accounts. This course focuses on the strategic issues (those over-used words) - what figures reveal about the drivers of business and what they reveal about the day-to-day issues that accountants bother you with. The course will enhance your understanding of finance and of the accounting issues which affect your projects, production and technical areas of business. This course will help you: Understand the business world in figures - make sense of what the accountants are telling you Appreciate what drives business - and how this affects your role in your part of the business Relate your activities to the success of the business - through figures Gain the skills to advance in management - financial awareness is a 'must have' if you are to progress in your career 1 What do accountants do? The finance function, types of accountant, financial v management accounting and the treasury function Understanding the role of the finance function and how the information you provide may be used 2 The basic financial statements Balance sheets and income statements (P&L accounts) What they are, what they contain and above all what they can reveal - how to read them The accounting process - from transactions to financial statements What underpins the statements - accounting systems and internal controls 3 Why be in business - from a financial perspective The driving forces behind financial information Performance measures - profitability, asset utilisation, sales and throughput, managing capital expenditure 4 Accounting rules - accounting standards Accounting concepts and the accounting rules: accruals, 'going concern' - substance over form and other 'desirable qualities' Accruals - why the timing of a transaction is so important to the finance function Depreciation and amortisation - the concepts and practice Accounting standards - the role of International Financial Reporting Standards 5 Cash The importance of cash flow - working capital management Cash flow statements - monitoring overall cash flows Raising cash - levels of borrowing, gearing Spending cash - an outline of capital expenditure appraisal 6 Budgeting Why budget? - good and bad practice Determining why budgets play a key role and should not be simply an annual ritual Justifying your budgets - the link between the strategic plan and day-to-day budgeting - alignment of company culture Budgets as motivators - the importance of the right culture Techniques to improve budgeting - whether day-to-day or capital budgeting 7 Costing The type and detail of costing very much depends on your business - eg, manufacturing piston rings is quite different from the construction of a power plant Issues with overhead allocation Accounting for R&D 8 Reading financial statements Annual financial statements - why they are produced, what's in them and what you should look for Learning what a set of accounts reveals about a company's current situation, profitability and future prospects 9 Performance measurement - analytical reviews and ratio analysis ROI/ROCE Profitability, margins and cost control Sales - asset turnover Efficiency (asset / stock turnover, debtor / creditor days) 'City' measures Investment (interest / dividend cover, earnings per share, dividend yield)

Existential Dialogue 2025: "Knots" with Prof. E. Spinelli

By Therapy Harley Street

A starting point to this series of dialogues on insanity, where we will be analyzing R. D. Laings brilliant book "Knots". With Bárbara Godoy We aim to explore the lived experiences on irregular perceptions of reality with an open mind. Each Saturday includes: a live dialogue between Prof. Ernesto Spinelli and an International Existential Therapist; a moment to share your thoughts and feelings with the teachers; and a final integration facilitated by Bárbara Godoy. This series of ten dialogues set out to explore the multifaceted dimentions and complexities associated with Existential Therapies. It attempts to engage with various interpretations of insanity through the lens of patients often painful, confounding, and deeply unsettling life experiences. Knots - between Prof. Ernesto Spinelli and Bárbara Godoy “As a starting point to this series of dialogues on insanity; I wanted to return to R. D. Laings brilliant book which was originally published in 1970. Knots consists of a series of dialogue-scenarios that can be read as poems or brief plays, each demonstrating the intricacies and insanities of human relationships. I would like to expand on Laings insights by exploring the professional relationship between therapist and client as yet another human relationship that, while constantly expanding (and expounding on) its intricacies, might do well to pay more attention to its accompanying insanities.” Prof. Ernesto Spinelli. Prof. Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy, supervision, psychology, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 2000, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels. Bárbara Godoy M.A., Adv. Dip. Exi. Psy, UKCP accredited Psychotherapist and Supervisor, MBACP and SEA – Director of Therapy Harley Street. Bárbara’s academic experience in London since 2008 includes lecturing and researching on the theory and practice of Phenomenological Existential Therapy on Doctorate, MA and professional courses at the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology, Regent’s University and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling directed by Emmy van Deurzen. Fundamentals of Gas Well Deliquification

By EnergyEdge - Training for a Sustainable Energy Future

About this training course Gas well performance is dictated by the combination of inflow and outflow performance. The outflow performance of any gas well is at risk as soon as the gas rate becomes insufficient to lift the associated liquid water and condensate to surface. This condition is referred to as liquid loading and invariably causes intermittent production and significant loss of well capacity and reserves. Liquid loading can be mitigated by different types of gas well deliquification such as compression, velocity string, plunger lift, foam-assisted lift, gas lift and downhole pump. This 5 full-day course will first show how to predict and recognize liquid loading. Next, it will describe how to select, design, install and operate the best sequence of deliquification measures. It will also consider deliquification in the presence of other production threats such as water production and halite blockage. These topics will be illustrated by an abundance of field examples and case studies. The participants will be completing a case study during the training. This case study is preferably based on their own relevant data set. If no such data is available, an external data set will be provided instead. Prerequisites skills: It is necessary for the participants to have a basic knowledge of petroleum engineering and gas well performance. This course can also be offered through Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) format. Training Objectives On completion of this course, the participants will be able to: Develop skills and tools to understand and model gas well liquid loading and deliquification Understand the principles and practicalities of different deliquification methods Learn how to compare, select and apply deliquification measures by taking own field case as example Target Audience This course is intended for production engineer, surveillance engineer, completion engineer, production/process chemist, reservoir engineer, production programmer, production operator as well as professionals responsible for selecting, installing, operating, monitoring and optimizing deliquification. Course Level Basic or Foundation Training Methods This course utilizes Excel worksheets first introduced in the Optimising Gas Well Performance course. To derive maximum learning value, the participants are requested to bring their own relevant set of field data to complete their own case study during the training. The list of data required will be shared beforehand so data can be timely collected and cleared for external use. The participants should be prepared to complete any unfinished exercises and assignments before next day's session starts. The instructor will be available to discuss any remaining queries after the completion of the course. Trainer Your expert course leader brings with him 35 years of oil and gas field experience within Shell of which 25 years as gas well production engineer. He has covered the full spectrum of activities moving from R&D to green field development to brown field surveillance and optimisation, to become a leading gas well performance and deliquification specialist. He likes to capture the complex reality of gas well inflow, outflow and reservoir performance by means of practical data-driven rules and tools that cover a wide range of conditions i.e. shallow-to-deep, prolific-to-tight, dry-to-wet, green-to-brown, 1-1/2'-to-9-5/8' tubing, and depletion-to-aquifer drive. Before his retirement in end 2020, he worked for various Shell affiliated oil and gas companies including Shell Malaysia, Petroleum Development Oman, NAM Netherlands and Shell R&D in Netherlands and USA. POST TRAINING COACHING SUPPORT (OPTIONAL) To further optimise your learning experience from our courses, we also offer individualized 'One to One' coaching support for 2 hours post training.
