Hi there! I’m Karen Holmes, manager and owner of Play Academy. In the Summer of 2019, my life took a huge, exciting turn when I took on this wonderful club. Up until then, I had spent 20 years as a very happy & successful Primary School teacher. During my time as a teacher, I had the pleasure of working with many, many children across the primary age range. I also trained as a student mentor and worked alongside trainee teachers supporting & developing practice. In addition to this I was also responsible for the PSHE curriculum across the whole school, an area I am still massively passionate about. Whilst building my career as an educator, I was also bringing up my two gorgeous sons Toby & Zach. Because I was juggling being a mum with being a teacher, I fully understand the desire parents have for quality wrap around care for children; it’s something my husband and I accessed for our two lovely boys during their primary years. As my career progressed and opportunities were being put in front of me, I paused for a bit and realised that teaching was no longer for me. I was spending less and less time doing the things that had steered me into teaching in the first place; planning, creating & facilitating new and fun quality experiences for children. I wanted to get back to just having ‘fun’ with little people, blowing bubbles, building dens, playing boards games, enjoying the outdoors and most of all…….laughing! To allow children a comfortable, home from home space to practise being good citizens, develop key life skills and master the art of a two way conversation.

We collect waste wood from a variety of companies and businesses from firms that have pallets and wood packaging waste, local engineers, theatres, production companies through to private house renovations. We also work with large national building sites: the construction process continually generates so much waste wood, much of which is reusable so keeps our shop stock varied and sustainable. The wood is then brought back to our warehouse, processed and repurposed to sell to the public in our shop. Doing this is very labour-intensive so creates lots of jobs, training and volunteering opportunities, providing local people with new skills and confidence to find work and improve their lives. We aim to be part of the regeneration of our local area and provide a positive impact. The spirit of the Centre’s aims has remained unchanged for over 100 years: Swarthmore seeks to inspire lives through friendly learning within a commitment to equality of opportunity Swarthmore is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning sessions as well as the courses and activities. Our main aim is to encourage people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions. We work on a friendly, human scale. Many volunteers currently support the Centre’s work, and we welcome their contributions of time and energy. The Centre was founded by members of the Quaker movement in 1909 with the aim of including and involving people in learning activities and making sure that people were treated with equality and respect. Two members of the Society of Friends remain on our democratically elected ‘Council’ of Trustees, made up of Centre members and representatives of community organisations with shared aims. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our Grade II Listed Building has a fascinating history and is made up of six four-story terraced houses with additional dance and art studios to the rear. We have specialist facilities for pottery, jewellery, stained glass and sculpture, and the atmosphere is intentionally homely and informal. We also work within the local community on negotiated projects, including arts and ‘Skills for Life’ programmes. Many groups and individuals make use of the Centre as a community resource, providing facilities for a wide variety of local groups. Swarthmore attracts a social mix of people who come to the Centre because of their shared interests in learning rather than their background. We offer room hire at competitive rates, and welcome the public to use our café facilities. We deliver teacher training programmes . We twin the schools with UK schools for ongoing educational and cultural exchange. We assist with basic healthcare at all schools: Provide first aid kits to all schools and sanitary towels to secondary schools, Provide basic healthcare assessments on pupils, Provide assistance if parents can't afford or access essential treatment. Leeds Sanctuary is a network of communities in Leeds City Centre, that each begin with encounter and embody sanctuary and justice, through which individuals and the city flourish in the ways of God’s Kingdom. You can read more about those core values here. We create spaces and resources on and offline for people to connect more deeply with themselves, one another and important issues of social justice. We are exploring craftivism, meditation, mindfulness, climate change, wellbeing, Christian spirituality and much more. We create free mindfulness, meditation and craftivist resources, which are available on our blog. We also run in person events on these themes as well as wellbeing sessions for different groups. We are a Christian project for people of all faiths and none run by the Yorkshire West Methodist District. We are building on a strong history of Methodism in Leeds City Centre.
