Thistle Aikikai is a member of the Scottish and Borders Birankai under the technical direction of T.K Chiba Shihan. The Chief Instructor, Michael Flynn Shihan began his study of Aikido in 1982 at San Diego Aikikai under the direction of Shihan TK Chiba. He was named Shihan in June of 2005 and was awarded 7th Dan by Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru on 14 January 2018 during the Kagami Baraki celebration at Hombu Dojo. He was formally awarded his Shihan Certificate in a ceremony at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in November 2006 by the second Doshu, Ueshiba Moriteru. He has also received Iaido Shihan title from Mitsuzuka Sensei. Since arriving in Scotland, Flynn Sensei has established the Thistle Aikikai. He serves as the Chairman and Technical Director of Scottish and Borders Birankai. Thisle Aikikai offers beginner through to advanced classes in Aikido and weapons. All are welcome. Instruction in Iaido , the art of drawing the sword and striking a killing blow, is also offered at Thistle Aikikai. In Iaido, students learn to use the sword not merely as a tool for cutting down one’s enemy, but as a method of allowing the mind and body to become more harmonious with nature. During training, students will learn the forms of the Muso Shinden Ryu Iai as developed by Nakayama Hakudo Sensei, with a goal toward synchronizing their breathing and body motions within the techniques in order to understand and practice the efficient use of the body. Many of the drawings that I produce are constructed via two very different drawing techniques. The initial drawing, or skeleton, is drawn completely blind until I can sense that the main details have been put onto the paper. This is followed by the details being added in a much more careful way looking at the paper and the subject/source. The combination of the wild abandon of the blind drawing and the careful, meticulous details is a process that I find very satisfying. I believe that it fulfills my various impulses as an artist to draw in this way. The tension between freedom and control, instinct and deliberateness and imperfections and corrections are all contained in a single drawing. The action of 'fixing', or almost trying to justify the initial blind drawing is the main driving force behind the process. In terms of subject matter, I am drawn to found images which stir something in me emotionally, and I try to be instinctive in this. The contemplative times when alone and the intensity of love are something that I try to capture in my images. The action of embracing imperfections is something that feels poignant considering the numerous ideals in modern society.

Our basic model works in two ways: Community classes for adults age 18 and up are run out of our Shawlands Language Nest, offered on a semester basis, in-person and online for a period of 10 weeks each time. These classes are bookable by individuals through our website here. The surplus revenue from these community classes cross-subsidise our work with older adults, including those living with dementia in care homes, community groups and day centres across Scotland. These care classes are only bookable in partnership with an organisation. The Language Nest A picture of students from our 2022 Summer Semester in the cosy Shawlands Language Nest! We run classes for adults of all ages in our very own Lingo Flamingo Language Nest, located in Shawlands, Glasgow, an area known for its vibrancy, diversity and strong sense of community. We still use the same sensory, stimulating techniques to make classes fun and accessible, but these classes are designed for those living without a dementia diagnosis from age 18 upwards. We also continue to emphasise the health benefits and show that language learning can be for everyone. All the money that is raised through the Language Nest gets put towards our work with older adults including those living with dementia. That’s to say, each and every penny of surplus revenue is used to cross-subsidise classes for older adults and those living with dementia across Scotland. As such, the Nest not only acts as a way to change perceptions of language learning, but as means to expand our social impact. It also means that any student joining our flock will not only gain from the benefits of language learning, but can feel good about having created a positive effect on society. Everyone’s a winner.
