The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTC Scotland) was set up in 1965. It
was created following calls from teachers for a body to ensure teacher standards
and was one of the first teaching councils in the world. In 2012, it became the
world’s first independent professional and regulatory body for teaching. GTC
Scotland’s Council governs GTC Scotland and sets strategic policy. Council
membership is set by law. The majority of Council are elected teachers or
college lecturers. GTC Scotland sets the standards of professionalism with and
for Scotland’s teachers and college lecturers. It is a legal requirement for all
teachers working in Scottish schools to be registered with GTC Scotland. In
2018, there was a national agreement to register all lecturers working in
Scotland’s colleges through GTC Scotland.
