KIRAN (also known as KIRAN Cymru) is committed to improving mental wellbeing of Black Asian Ethnic Minority people living in Wales. We particularly focus on people over 50 and young people. However, all of our activities are ‘open to all’, and we welcome everyone to participate. We currently have several projects to promote mental wellbeing. Please see below to learn about the projects and visit their respective websites. KIRAN Legal - Free Legal Help This is a pilot project by KIRAN Cymru. We help financially disadvantaged BAME members in Wales by offering free legal support (Benefits, Housing and employment) and interpretation/translation services in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Sylheti, Punjabi and Gujrati. Please visit, kiranlegal.co.uk for more information. Friends in Need - Befriending Service This is a pilot project by KIRAN Cymru. Since March 2020, we have been helping BAME people in Cardiff with their day-to-day needs, i.e., grocery shopping. We also ring elderly community members regularly to keep in touch and overcome loneliness through our befriending service. Our ‘Friends in Need’ service helps BAME people in Wales to connect with other people and fight social isolation. Our Communities Our Strength - Wellbeing for BAME People This is a project by KIRAN Cymru. This project started in March 2021. We aim to combat the adverse effects of COVID 19 pandemic by creating regular and structured opportunities for BAME community members to connect with each other through virtual meet-ups, games, and cultural activities. We offer various opportunities for all BAME people in Wales to connect with other people in virtual social meet-ups, e.g., book clubs, bridge clubs, learning musical instruments, e.g., Piano and Tabla. There is also a community musical group for you to join. As a part of this project, we have started an English Online Magazine called Story Cloud. All community members are encouraged to take part in creative writing. KIRAN Cymru offers free guidance and training on ‘Creative Writing’. It is a beautiful skill and can improve the confidence and self-esteem of the writer. Please get in touch with us if you want to take part in creative writing. Story Cloud will publish the selected short stories, poetry and feature written by community members. Apart from the above, we offer other befriending services for local communities. Dr Anita Shaw Dr Anita Shaw has over 23 years experience of supporting teachers in interactive science teaching, starting at the Science Museum in London, and more recently at Techniquest Science Discovery Centre in Cardiff where she was responsible for the centre’s education strategy. She started her career as a research scientist, initially in neurosciences and latterly in medical genetics. Anita is passionate about engaging young people, particularly girls, in STEM. She currently sits on the Welsh Government’s Women in STEM Board and chairs it Education subgroup. She runs the Welsh Valleys Engineering Project for the Royal Academy of Engineering, is a coach for the Institute of Physics Improving Gender Balance project and a trustee at Chwarae Teg. She is excited about the career opportunities in STEM for young people and believes that, alongside parents, primary school teachers have a central role in nurturing children’s natural curiosity.

Bespoke Consultancy & Education Limited was founded in 2013 by Alison, who has worked in Domiciliary Care, Learning Disabilities, set up and ran a Young Carers Project, been an Assessor, Internal Quality Assurer, Social Care course leader in a local College, Alison is also the Chair of Trustees for a charity that supports Individuals with mental health and learning difficulties. She is passionate about raising the standards in social care and helping others. Alison is a Dignity Champion and wants to raise the awareness of dignity through her work. Whilst the company has grown considerably it remains a family run business. Tony, Alison’s husband, joined the business in August 2015. His background is management in the motor trade. He runs the office and administration team. He has learnt a lot about social care in the past few years and has the same drive and passion as Alison to make changes to the way people work in social care. He has been an invaluable member of the team as he has seen the social care sector with ‘fresh eyes’ and has questioned the way we work in the social care sector.

Grange Pavilion Youth Forum

Grange Pavilion is a partnership project between residents’ group Grange Pavilion Project, Grangetown Community Action, Cardiff University and Cardiff Council to redevelop a previously-vacant bowls pavilion into a top quality community facility. This space will provide affordable space-for-hire, a community-focused café offering employment and training opportunities to local young people, outdoor gardening, growing opportunities and much-needed public amenities in a popular inner-city park.Between June 2016 and November 2018, residents tested projects in the old building. In that time, Grange Pavilion brought together more than 3,000 residents, was used by over 100 stakeholders, and launched 150 community-led initiatives in response to community-generated ideas resulting in over 1,000 sessions/activities on site. Projects included the Grange Pavilion Youth Forum, a Girls’ Hub, reading sessions, Friends and Neighbours meetings, NHS Mental Health Peer Support Group, a Creative Tech Café, a community Iftar, a gardening club with a local primary school, ESOL classes, a homework club, adult learners’ week activities and careers and role models’ week.

We expose students to what science is really like and encourage them to continue studying STEAM subjects in school and beyond. Our stunning 3D shows are captivating and informative. The visual impact of the high-tech delivery mechanism will ensure that it captures the attention of students of all ages and abilities. AstroCymru is passionate to raise pupil attainment levels by promoting the many different careers in the space industry from astronauts to various space scientists and engineers through various hands on workshops. Funded by the Welsh Government in 2013 AstroCymru started as project set up by Dr Paul Roche and Emma Wride as part of an outreach arm of the Astronomy Dept. at the University of S. Wales, delivering astronomy related workshops to schools across Wales. Further funding in 2015 allowed the project to expand and become part of the Physics and Astronomy Dept. at Cardiff University. Since 2018 AstroCymru has been a commercial company, continuing to deliver exciting and inspirational STEAM educational programmes to primary and secondary schools, festivals and public events.

Teacher-led, our project is an active reaction against the growing commercialisation of language training and the impersonalisation that engenders. UK-based, but with a firm European focus, Monfreid & Fry is a training organisation with a strong sense of social responsibility.

This training programme has been operating in Wales since 2009. Every year around 300 places are taken up at our training courses or events, a figure that was doubled during the pandemic as we transferred our courses online to support media workers across Wales. We provide skill-building courses, redundancy support, wellbeing sessions and conferences that examine the future of journalism and communications. The project is funded by the Welsh Government's Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) and is delivered by a team of experienced freelance journalists and trainers, providing essential skills and refreshers to journalists and communications professionals from Wales and beyond
