WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? Our approach is light touch with minimal intervention in the environment and prioritising nature. We are currently developing our site facilities and creating spaces for small groups and low impact events. These include bushcraft, forest school, wellbeing sessions, forest bathing, yoga, pilates, artist retreats etc. We’re already working with schools, charities, youth and arts groups. If you've got a small scale event, workshop or idea you'd like to make happen, we would love to hear from you. Just drop us a message on our contact page. NATURE Our ethos is very much one of balance, so for us plants and animals are as important as people. We are currently working with fantastic environmental advisors to establish what plants and animals are currently residing on our site. Our aim is to protect the habitats that already exist, create a comprehensive management plan and increase biodiversity where possible. It's all about the science! In common with most of the British Isles the land here has been managed by humans for hundreds of years - a mixture of farming, park land and old tree plantations. It’s not wild in the true sense of an untouched natural ecosystem but it’s a special place that has been left pretty much to itself for several decades. We’re just starting our long term project to create more detailed surveys of the flora and fauna, and are excited to meet and work with new people. We bring people together to re-imagine our relationships with technology through dialogue and arts. We live in a world where machines increasingly collect information about us, reducing our bodies and the things around us to streams of data. In turn the digital realm can feel abstract, and out of our control. The stuff of computers and digital infrastructure is often hidden out of sight and huge power imbalances exist around who is making technology and who benefits from it. Yet the impact of our interactions with machines and technologies are very much rooted in the body, materials, and emotions. Through workshops, discussions, installations and screenings Control Shift brings creative and critical approaches to technology. Control Shift 2020 was curated by Becca Rose, Martha King and Rod Dickinson, and you can visit the archive to find out more about the programme. In 2019 we produced ‘You Make the Rules’ which was part of Processing Community Day (a global celebration of ‘art, code and diversity’ initiated by the Processing Foundation). Hello! I am Samantha Dholakia, the founder of SPD Tuition and Coaching and creator of The Behaviour Balance System© (TBBS) and The Behaviour Bank© (TBB). I am an Executive Coach and mentor, Neurolinguistic Programmer and Consultant Trainer. Our school is named after the famous explorer, John Cabot (c. 1450 to c. 1500). He was born Giovanni Caboto and came from Italy. While he’s known as Giovanni in Italy today, he called himself ‘Zuan’. That is the Venetian form of John, which, despite the spelling, is pronounced a bit like a cross between Jean and Juan (the French and Spanish forms of ‘John’). Hence he became known as John Cabot as an anglicised version of his name. He moved to England to find new opportunities and was given a grant by Henry VII to search and find new lands to claim for both the king himself and for England. John Cabot is most famous for setting sail from Bristol on board his ship, The Matthew (which our Academy logo represents). There is a reconstruction of the ship in the harbour in Bristol’s city centre. It is most likely that he came to Bristol to find financial backing for his voyage where he hoped to find a quicker route to Asia. He sailed to Canada and proclaimed the land he found there as the ‘Newfoundland’ which it is still called to this day. However, he mistakenly believed he was in Asia! As a result of his discoveries, he was the first early modern European to discover North America. He did not come across native Americans during this voyage, but it did impact later voyages of discovery. Other explorers used John Cabot as an example and felt that they could also travel to new countries and take the land and resources they found there. His actions became a blueprint for further colonisation of other countries and it is known that in 1502, another expedition (not Cabot’s) arrived back in England with three native Americans who could have been taken against their will. These people later became servants in Henry VII’s household. However, by this time John Cabot was dead, so he could not have been involved in this.

Governance operates at two different levels at Abbeywood Community School as it is an academy and part of The Olympus Academy Trust. Abbeywood Community School Improvement Committee The Trust Governors at Abbeywood Community School work closely with the school’s Senior Leadership Team and Staff to develop the vision and aims of the school community. They seek to raise standards and achievement through the appropriate use of all available resources. The Governors’ responsibilities are to: Provide strategic direction for the work and improvement of the school. Support, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the school. Ensure accountability for standards and quality of education in the school. Governance is assessed by OFSTED in its Leadership and Management judgement about the school and so is an integral part of the running of the school. The School Improvement Committee consists of people from a variety of backgrounds who represent different areas of the school and local community. Having experience across multiple property investment strategies and related businesses such as lettings management, sourcing and property consultancy. A landlord and business owner for 20 years, trainer, mentor and coach to the property industry for 12 years, member of the Property Educators Accreditation scheme, Arden has not only extensive experience in the industry, but also a track record of using that experience to train others to achieve their property goals. Buy To Let & Social Housing  With previous buy-to-let experience in Australia, Arden was immediately drawn to this as a primary strategy. Today, Arden has an extensive buy to let portfolio in the UK that he has built in Northampton, Nottingham and Hull. He has a range of houses for family lets, rented to both working tenants and within the social housing sector, and flats serving the young professional market. Arden says, “I think buy to let is the foundation of any successful property portfolio and this part of my portfolio was what allowed me to first achieve financial freedom. I think every investor needs to learn the fundamentals of buy to let, even if they ultimately choose to focus on other strategies within their portfolio because there are so many simple but important lessons to learn around being a good landlord and managing tenants effectively that you get from understanding this core strategy.”  HMO & Rent To Rent                         HMO was a natural progression from initial Buy to Let purchases to “increase my cash flow and take advantage of market conditions in my target area at that time being Nottingham.” With an extensive HMO portfolio, his preference are a larger number of smaller HMOs i.e. 4-6 tenants rather than a smaller number of large HMOs, although he has experience of both. How can an investor make this strategy work for them? “I believe HMO provides an excellent income stream and if done correctly can be a very stable income stream as well. I think the key to a successful HMO is setting it up correctly from the outset to make it as attractive and user friendly for tenants, and identify potential cost centres or savings before tenants go in and empowering my lettings agents to put together the right tenant mix to create a harmonious environment.”  Distressed Property & Adding Value  Every property that Arden has purchased has been distressed to some degree, as he says “I believe this is the one true route to make money out of property.” He has applied the lessons he has learnt on smaller projects as he has moved on to larger more complex investment properties. It’s also given him the opportunity to work with distressed sellers which he regards as a core skill in a property investor’s arsenal. As Arden says, “With a distressed seller, you are a solution provider trying to create a win/win situation where you can offer a route for the seller to sell the property that removes their financial burden, while at the same time offering an opportunity for you as an investor to make a fair profit.”  Commercial to Residential & Development                         As his confidence has grown, so has Arden’s willingness to commit to more complicated projects and he has successfully adopted commercial to residential conversions as a strategy since 2013 primarily working with either disused retail or office space which is in abundance in the UK. It’s not hard to see the appeal, as Arden says, “I find that there is a huge opportunity for value uplift in this strategy as the closer you get to effectively a shell, the more opportunities you have to make money.’                     Portfolios                    There are a number of options for approaching the acquisition of a portfolio, whether it’s title splitting a block of flats, via a freehold/leasehold strategy, organising a share buyout of a property company, or structuring a staggered sale to maximise buyer and seller value and tax savings. Arden has experience dealing with the simple acquisition of a portfolio to the complex and sometimes challenging world of dealing with portfolios in trouble, direct to owners, via agents, liquidators or administrators.                     Complimentary businesses and deal structuring  Having an interest in a lettings agency, experience running a sourcing business/property consultancy for 7 years and working with multiple business partners has taught Arden the value of building business clusters to support each other and working with business partners and private investors to make business happen. ‘Property deals can come together from your own resources, time and effort, but as your ambitions grow and the opportunities get bigger, it’s important to think about how private finance and joint ventures can create profit for you and your partners. I’d rather have a cut of something than the whole of nothing.’  Mentorship & Training               For Arden, it’s an honour to be invited to mentor to share his knowledge with others which provides enormous, personal satisfaction. Even though he’s not naturally outgoing, Arden admits that “As a self-confessed property geek, if you ask me questions about property, I’m happy to talk for days.” He encourages his mentees to “Soak up as much as you can from people who have done it before and been successful. Soak up the knowledge for sure, but also the motivation and mindset.” He concludes, “I don't think there is any better way to start in property than to work side by side with someone who has been where you are starting from and has proved how to make it work.”  CHRIS CORMACK Chris Cormack is a property investor and business owner with a vast experience working with people to develop their property investments and business growth. Helping people to succeed has been a large part of his business focus over the last 16 years as a mentor, trainer and coach. His understanding of the industry through building his own portfolio across a range of strategies enables him to work with clients around their goals so they achieve whichever outcome they are looking for. Chris is recognised within the property industry and is member of the Property Educators Accreditation scheme. From a standing start in November 2004 Chris built his property business across various strategies within the property industry. Property had a great appeal for 5 reasons: 1. Being his own boss  2. Recurring monthly income  3. Large lump sums of income 4. Long term capital growth 5. Opportunity to help others benefit from the same reasons 1-4. BUY TO LET & SOCIAL HOUSING  Chris believes "Buy To Lets are the foundation to any successful property portfolio because it's the quickest way to generate income while you learn the initial fundamentals of the business. Demand is high across the country for BTL which other strategies don't necessarily have. Within our portfolio we have a wide mix of tenants including families, couples, singles as well as fixed term guaranteed social housing contracts." Understanding the industry and our responsibilities is paramount and gives us the necessary grounding to progress income across other strategies. A number of his properties have been used as serviced accommodation through a commercial contract. These have resulted in guaranteed income, ensuring a hands off pain free outcome. HMO  Chris continues "For larger income, having HMOs brings considerable changes to your monthly bank account which was our natural progression. A major learning moving into HMOs was all the necessary fire requirements and additional management needs. These of course add costs which are not present with your BTL's. Having this knowledge prior to committing to this strategy is important along with a deep understanding of who will be your tenant market. Generally this is less flexibility so more targeted research initially is imperative to achieve your successful outcome. ADDING VALUE & FLIPS Lump sums of income is an area Chris has targeted when buying properties, modernising them and selling them. A key component to achieve these returns is looking to see where true value can be added, increasing value is paramount here. His view on this is that while it generates substantial income it also gives the opportunity to allow faster growth within his portfolio. Having addition capital to invest gives a wider deal choice and opportunities to structure deals. "Having greater tools while in front of a motivated seller allows you the facility to be more creative especially if you can offer a solution to their current situation." STRUCTURING SOLUTIONS  Over the years he has been able to structure deals which has helped the seller which in turn helped him dramatically reduce initial capital to acquire the property. "The key is to focusing on them, the seller and come to a win, win scenario." Achieving this has added numerous properties to the portfolio.  With a deal seeing what is really there gives Chris an edge. Where most people see a single outcome in a deal Chris likes to look for multiple outcomes across strategies. As his experience has developed the confidence has taken him into larger projects which can deliver multiple opportunities. Understanding the finance and tax implication can give additional advantages. Having bought a portfolio with land created multiple flip opportunities which resulted in the land cost him nothing, free land. Having free land gave him further choices around planning. Sell with planning or build out and sell with a decision based on whichever gives the greater return for time/money invested. MENTORSHIP, COACHING AND TRAINING Chris has been mentoring property investors since 2007. He himself had the benefit of a mentor and fully understands how it accelerates your portfolio growth, "money well spent" and that's from a Scotsman....! "It was a privilege to be asked and was something I had wanted to do, so I enthusiastically jumped at the chance." Being able to pass on market experience, as well as working with people to develop the best strategy for them is extremely rewarding. Sometimes it's the smallest thing that creates the biggest impact and it does not matter if you are new or have some experience in property, accessing another person's experience is a springboard to a new set of outcomes, for the better.

The Impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs) on the Grid

About this Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)  Electrification of the transportation sector will impact the power system in several ways. Besides the additional load, local impact on the grid needs to be managed by the grid operators. Simultaneously charging of many electric vehicles (EVs) might exceed the limits in specific locations. On the other hand, EVs can provide flexibility and other ancillary services that will help grid operators. This 3 half-day VILT course will provide a complete overview of integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the power grid. It will cover the whole value chain from grid operations to the car battery. This includes the control room, possible grid reinforcement, demand side management and power electronics. This course will demonstrate the impact on the grid and solutions for a safe & cost-effective grid plan and operation, with examples of successful integration of EVs. The course will also provide vital knowledge about technology used for EVs such as power electronics, demand side management, communication and batteries. In this context, the focus will be on power electronics as it has the highest impact on the grid. The grid planning tool, pandapower, is introduced as an open source tool for power system modelling. The set-up of the training course allows for discussion and questions. Questions can be formulated by the participants upfront or during the training. This course is delivered in partnership with Fraunhofer IEE. Training Objectives At the end of this course, the participants will: Understand the charging options for EVs and its impact on the grid and batteries Identify system services for EVs with regards to voltage quality at the point of common coupling Discover what are the 'grid friendly' and grid supporting functions in EVs Uncover the different applications, standards and data researched on EVs Examine the application of a grid planning tool (pandapower) for power system modelling Be able to develop code snippets with pandapower Apply and execute a code example for power system modelling with pandapower Target Audience EV and grid project developers and administrators Power grid operators and planners EPC organisations involved in grid development EV/ battery manufacturers and designers EV transport planners and designers Government regulators and policy makers Training Methods The VILT will be delivered online in 3 half-day sessions comprising 4 hours per day, with 2 x 10 minutes breaks per day, including time for lectures, discussion, quizzes and short interactive exercises. Additionally, some self-study will be requested. Participants are invited but not obliged to bring a short presentation (10 mins max) on a practical problem they encountered in their work. This will then be explained and discussed during the VILT. A short test or quiz will be held at the end of every session/day. Trainer Our first course expert is Head of Department Converters and Electrical Drive Systems at Fraunhofer IEE and Professor for Electromobility and Electrical Infrastructure at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. He received his engineering degree in automation in 2008 by the THM Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (FH Giessen-Friedberg). Afterwards he studied power engineering at University of Kassel and received his diploma certificate in 2010. In 2016 he received the Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) from the University of Hannover. The title of his dissertation is Optimized multifunctional bi-directional charger for electric vehicles. He has been a researcher at the Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel since 2010 and deals with power converters for electric vehicles, photovoltaics and wind energy. His current research interests include the bidirectional inductive power transfer, battery charger and inverter as well as new power electronic components such as SiC MOSFETs and chokes. Additionally, our key expert is Chairman of the IEEE Joint IAS/PELS/IES German Chapter and a member of the International Scientific Committee of the EPE Association. Our second course expert is deputy head of energy storage department at Fraunhofer IEE. Prior to this he was the Director of Grid Integration department at SMA Solar Technology AG, one of the world's largest manufacturers of PV power converters. Before joining SMA, our course expert was manager of the Front Office System Planning at Amprion GmbH (formerly RWE TSO), one of the four German transmission system operators. He holds a degree of electrical engineering of the University of Kassel, Germany. In 2003 he finished his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) on the topic of wind power forecasting at the 'Institute of Solar Energy Supply Technology' (now Fraunhofer IEE) in Kassel. In 2004 he started his career at RWE TSO with main focus on wind power integration and congestion management. Our course expert is chairman of the IEC SC 8A 'Grid Integration of Large-capacity Renewable Energy (RE) Generation' and has published several papers about grid integration of renewable energy source and forecasting systems on books, magazines, international conferences and workshops. Our third course expert is Research Associate at Fraunhofer IEE. He is actively working on different projects related to the integration of electric vehicle charging into the electric distribution grid. The focus of this work concerns time series based simulations for grid planning and operation in order to investigate the effect of a future rollout of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure on economics e.g. costs for grid reinforcement. He completed his master degree (MSc.) in Business Administration and Engineering: Electrical Power Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. Our trainers are experts from Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (Fraunhofer, IEE), Germany. The Fraunhofer IEE researches for the national and international transformation of energy supply systems POST TRAINING COACHING SUPPORT (OPTIONAL) To further optimise your learning experience from our courses, we also offer individualized 'One to One' coaching support for 2 hours post training.
