The spirit of the Centre’s aims has remained unchanged for over 100 years: Swarthmore seeks to inspire lives through friendly learning within a commitment to equality of opportunity Swarthmore is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning sessions as well as the courses and activities. Our main aim is to encourage people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions. We work on a friendly, human scale. Many volunteers currently support the Centre’s work, and we welcome their contributions of time and energy. The Centre was founded by members of the Quaker movement in 1909 with the aim of including and involving people in learning activities and making sure that people were treated with equality and respect. Two members of the Society of Friends remain on our democratically elected ‘Council’ of Trustees, made up of Centre members and representatives of community organisations with shared aims. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our Grade II Listed Building has a fascinating history and is made up of six four-story terraced houses with additional dance and art studios to the rear. We have specialist facilities for pottery, jewellery, stained glass and sculpture, and the atmosphere is intentionally homely and informal. We also work within the local community on negotiated projects, including arts and ‘Skills for Life’ programmes. Many groups and individuals make use of the Centre as a community resource, providing facilities for a wide variety of local groups. Swarthmore attracts a social mix of people who come to the Centre because of their shared interests in learning rather than their background. We offer room hire at competitive rates, and welcome the public to use our café facilities. The Family of Learning Trust is a small Trust serving Calderdale and the adjoining areas. The Trust is committed to a local approach, unlike some other large academy chains. WLC Ltd spun out of the University of Dundee in 2004, originally to commercialise the results of a major EPSRC funded programme “A Generic Approach to Whole Life Costing”. Its activities have subsequently expanded to encompass the commercialisation of all the intellectual property and expertise developed by the Construction Management Research Unit (CMRU). The CMRU was part of the Department of Civil Engineering which was consistently placed top in Scotland and in the top half dozen in the UK in successive national Research Assessment Exercises. Supported by the research carried out by the CMRU, the company is ideally positioned to realise the synergies between academic research and practising professionals. The company’s multi-disciplinary staff, all of whom hold or are working towards a PhD, include Civil, Mechanical and Environmental Engineers, Architects and Computer Scientists. Drawing on this cutting edge research, the company has specialist expertise in the fields of construction productivity improvement, labour forecasting, project cost and time modelling, whole life costing, value management, risk based asset management and sustainability assessment. Its four technical directors continue to hold part-time or honorary appointments in world class academic institutions. Basis Yorkshire was set up (as Genesis Leeds) in 1989 by a few volunteers, supporting sexworkers in Leeds. In 1997, a young person’s service was established to accommodate the specific needs of girls and young women who were being sexually exploited. In 2018, Basis Boys was established to accommodate boys and young men that are being exploited, sexually or otherwise. The charity also provides high quality training and awareness raising sessions locally and nationally on social justice issues and practice development. POSITION STATEMENT – WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO Basis supports indoor and street sex workers who identify as women, and young people who are sexually exploited. Our purpose is to empower people to make safer and healthier choices by offering information, support and options. Our work is driven by a sound evidence base, as well as working closely with women and young people to ensure our services are designed and delivered with them, putting their voices and experience at the centre of our work. We challenge stigma and inequality of access to services for everyone we work with. We are proud to be one of a small number of specialist organisations that explicitly recognise and advocate for women’s right to work more safely when selling sex, while also supporting young people who are sexually exploited to be safer and free from harm. We understand that for some women and young people, their ‘choices’ are severely constrained by a range of factors including physical and mental health, substance use, family circumstances and abusive relationships, as we support them in managing the risks and vulnerabilities they face. We recognise people’s dignity and agency in their decision-making.

Lighthouse Futures Trust is an innovative and forward-looking organisation with a mission of changing the lives of young adults. We do this by designing and delivering engaging employability programmes that include opportunities to work with a range of local employers via a supported internship. Our curriculum focuses on two areas – Liveability and Employability – and is aimed at students aged 18+ with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). We start by getting to know each of our interns so that we can understand their skills, experiences and aspirations for the future. We then devise a bespoke programme for them which combines a range of different elements including: working on-site at a range of local employers; 1 to 1 coaching & mentoring; group work; support in gaining qualifications in Maths and English; participating in an enterprise project where they learn to create and launch a new product and service. Our talented students have a range of support needs. Some have mild to moderate learning disabilities, others are on the autistic spectrum or have social, emotional or mental health support needs. They join the programme because they want to move into paid employment and showcase their many skills and talents and just need some extra support in order for them to fulfil their potential. Our role – and our passion – is to help unlock their talents and shine a light on their abilities. From the beginning of their journey with us, we support or students to develop skills so that they can forge their own pathways in work, accessing specialist support as and when they need it, but taking ownership of their future, from the start. We believe that this helps them to find and keep paid employment more easily, and thus create a more sustainable future.
