Baby Week is a registered charity and aims to bring sectors and services together to promote the best start in life. The initiative was inspired by Brazil’s ‘Semana do Bebe’ (UNICEF 2010), following a visit to the country by Churchill Fellow Lucy Potter. Leeds hosted the first English speaking Baby Week in 2016 and since has had interest from several other towns and cities wanting to host their own celebrations. Since Baby Week became a registered charity, Bradford, Hull, Wakefield, Cheshire and Merseyside have organised their very own take on Baby Week Leeds. In 2019, we were nominated and came in second place as charity of the year by The British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards (BJM). Over the past six years, hundreds of citywide events have been held with thousands of attendees including parents, expectant parents, practitioners and professionals , and of course babies! Each city hosting the week has the opportunity to celebrate and bring together the work of maternity and early years services, helping to raise awareness of the critical developmental growth stages and a real focus on the 1001 days in order to give every baby the best start in life. Baby Week is organised with Child Friendly Leeds with partnerships involving NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Dads, Public Health, Mumbler, and many more partners across all sectors. To mark the 5 years in 2020, Baby Week Leeds focussed on five of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a focus over the next few years: Good Health and Wellbeing, Reduced Inequality, Sustainable cities and communities, Climate action and No Poverty.

Who Are We & Where Have We Come From? We created Tagtiv8 in 2012. Why? As teachers and school leaders, we love to learn. However, we hate sitting down for long periods of time. Sadly, many schools focus only on English and Mathematics – with certain subjects put to one side. In some schools, subjects are taught in boxes – we believe that this is not how we learn best. Our mission is simple – to create educational resources and training that develop confidence in key areas of the curriculum through physical activity. How Did We Get Here? We taught in various UK schools for 25 years. However, we were becoming increasingly worried that certain agencies – driven by data – were putting undue pressure on teachers and learners through academic accountability and over-testing. Craven College – a Further Education College based in Skipton, North Yorkshire, “The Gateway to the Dales”. Our unique position – at the juncture of West Yorkshire and East Lancashire enables us to offer a variety of further and higher education courses, including apprenticeships, undergraduate degrees and part-time adult education. Craven College started life in 1825 as the Skipton Mechanics Institute on the High Street in Skipton. During the Second World War the Skipton Art School and Skipton Technical Institute were established. In 1954 the Skipton Art School and Technical Institution become the Craven Institute for Further Education. In 1974, the College was renamed the Craven College of Adult Education and the full-time courses flourished mainly leading to secretarial work, hospitality and catering, social work and small business management. The Aireville Campus was developed in 1989 adjoining Aireville School (now The Skipton Academy). The Auction Mart Campus was later developed to accommodate all land-based courses and The Aviation Academy was established in Yeadon at Leeds Bradford Airport. Tyro Training was established in 2003 offering flexible training, consultancy and support to business across the North of England. With its HQ at Craven Cattle Mart in Skipton, Tyro Training also has a training base in Scarborough. The Animal Management Centre was opened for students in 2018 with specialist rooms for aquatics, invertebrates, nocturnals, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals. From its premises in Ripon, Evolve supports young people from across North Yorkshire with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and offers full Study Programmes, with a focus on work experience and skills for employment.

In 2018, Gateway Education sold its US operations in order to focus on its core market, the UK. Upon completion of the transaction, all responsibilities for servicing students were transferred as of 11th December 2018. Gateway Education no longer has a presence in the US. English Language Centre CIC is a registered Community Interest Company - a social enterprise where any profits generated are reinvested back into providing more opportunities. We believe that too many valuable members of our communities throughout the UK (and abroad), find it difficult to integrate and/or find sustainable, rewarding employment. For each individual facing either protracted unemployment and/or marginalisation within our communities, this is a tragedy that can impact their entire lives. There are also the wider economic and social costs to consider. There are a great number of specific reasons why people can struggle to integrate and access the sort of job opportunities they would like, but being unable to communicate effectively is the most fundamental barrier of all. Much of our focus is therefore involved in improving communication and language skills. English Language Centre CIC benefits from over thirty years of experience in English language education, training and consultancy, both in the UK and abroad. This experience enables us to help people improve their language and communication skills, and so build the foundations for better lives and better communities.
