The relationships our staff have with our pupils and their families is at the core of all the work we do, we recognise that the work we do is not solely based in the classroom or at school and it is a lifelong learning journey we are support our young people on. The school has a governing body which supports and challenges the Principal to guide the future direction of the school. West SILC is a regional centre of excellence for the MOVE programme, which supports our learners with physical disabilities to develop functional skills for everyday life – sitting, standing and for some, even walking. We provide outreach to other schools to develop these programmes.

We Love Sailing

we love sailing

Cleckheaton

I started lovesailing.net over 8 years ago while studying my RYA Day Skipper theory course and was struggling to find websites where I could test what I'd learnt. After several months of looking I decided to write the website myself, if I was wanting a site like this, then maybe other people as well. As far as I know, and please correct me if I'm wrong, We Love Sailing’s testing feature that allows users to answer random questions across different theory categories, and record their score, is one of a kind on the world wide web. And one that I hope is helping other sailors, new and old, improve their sailing knowledge. It certainly helped me to pass my course, and while I was the only person to use the site in the first year, I stuck with it and now it's used daily by sailors all over the world. This is only the beginning though, there are lots more plans for We Love Sailing, for a start I've added a "We" to the name of the site, I want the site to become a hub to bring people together from all walks of live who love sailing, a community where the can celebrate our sport / hobby, and where those curious about sailing can learn more. The dream is on. So onto my own personal sailing story, I best start by saying that I am in no way an experienced sailor, in fact I would quite easily class myself as a novice sailor. I've not actually sailed that much, at the time of writing this, 18th April 2018, I've only ever sailed on a yacht 3 times, and in a dinghy about 10 times. This is only the beginning though, there are lots more plans for love sailing and I'm starting to get excited about the possibilities, the dream is on.

HARROGATE

As a comprehensive academy our main aim is to ensure that our students achieve their potential – from Year 7 through to Sixth Form and beyond. We are very proud of our excellent reputation in the local community, as well as the wider areas of Leeds and the surrounding villages, and pride ourselves on the quality and breadth of education that we provide. We make principled decisions regarding examination entry, choosing to support the learning needs of the individual. Rossett School consistently achieves good examination results at both GCSE and in our Sixth Form. We are justly proud of our 'destinations data' that places Rossett School well above the North Yorkshire and national averages. In practice this means that all our Key Stage 4 students sustain their education, employment and training when they move to the next stage of their education. We expect all students to strive for continual improvement within a supportive culture that exhorts them to be Responsible, Resilient and Reflective learners. As an inclusive school, we expect our students to have the highest standards of behaviour, to respect diversity and to understand global citizenship and equality of opportunity. Our students are well-prepared to achieve future success once they move on from school, with the vast majority of our students going on to university study locally, nationally and to Oxbridge after Sixth Form. We are also delighted to be able to assist other schools in the region through the sharing of good practice and we are pleased to be one of the original partners within the Red Kite Teaching School Alliance, a cross-boundary affiliation of high achieving schools in North and West Yorkshire. The most important partnerships to us however, are the relationships built between school and home, where together we can most effectively prepare and support our students to achieve all that they can. Rossett School has high aspirations for every child and we endeavour to inspire ambition for all. We work hard to develop and innovate our learning and teaching experiences and put inspirational and inclusive learning at the heart of all we do. We continually advance our curriculum to be responsive to student need and skills for life. Budokai Karate

budokai karate

London

By Sensei Kevin Allmond 3rd Dan Hakuda Ryu Karate Senior Instructor & Technical Director - Budokai Karate Member of the BMABA (Pictured right) Every instructor at Budokai Karate realises that the martial arts is not simply about kicking and punching, but more about encouraging physical fitness, self confidence, self discipline and ultimately achieving a set of goals that we look to achieve together. We genuinley believe that in developing an individual both physically and mentally, they will reap the rewards in every aspect of their lives and it's because of this we are dedicated to not only producing excellent martial artists but outstanding members of the community. Budokai simply means "many styles" and as can be seen from the instructor profiles below, the main instructors all come from different backgrounds. Martial Arts are all essentially the same as there are only so many ways to perform a kick or a punch, however, there are subtle differences between styles which help people of varying abilities to perform each technique. With the wealth of experience that we are now gaining as an organisation there are very few techniques, if any, that can't be taught to people of any level. Whether they saw it on the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, on the Power Rangers, or on Yu Gi Oh, children today have been exposed to martial arts from an early age. From karate to kung fu, martial arts provide a powerful workout, but some parents worry that these sports are too violent for children. While it is true that martial arts originated as fighting systems in Asia, today's martial arts provide children with physical exercise, a chance to gain self confidence, an opportunity to interact with others, and worthwhile lessons in self defence. For children of all ages, martial arts are an exciting alternative to more traditional sports. We teach karate, or empty hand, which is perhaps the most well known martial art. Karate is a Japanese discipline used for self defence. In addition to throws and blocks, karate also incorporates punches and kicks as well as weapons. Karate competitions take place at all levels across the UK, and more information can be found from the British Karate Association. No matter in which martial arts your children become interested, all martial arts build confidence, encourage self control, motivate self esteem, and teach self defence. Martial arts are also incredibly safe when taught in an appropriate school, and all qualified instructors will be more than happy to share their qualifications and training philosophies. Finding the right school for your child could well be the first step to a long love affair with the martial arts.

The University of Huddersfield

Whatever you aim to do in life, it pays to get a good education. And with high standards of teaching and learning and excellent facilities that's exactly what our students can expect from the University of Huddersfield. Based right in the town centre and at the heart of the local community, we help thousands of people, from school leavers to those returning to education after a gap, achieve their goals each year. Why do nearly 20,000 students choose to study at Huddersfield? Excellence The University of Huddersfield is a growing centre of research and excellence and we always push the boundaries of knowledge. The University of Huddersfield achieved a Gold Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) award in June 2017. This award expired in June 2021 and the scheme is currently being revised. We look forward to being reassessed when the awards are re-opened in 2023. We won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award recognising the University’s commitment to world-class teaching and its success in developing students as independent learners and critical thinkers (Higher Education Academy, 2017). Triple proof of teaching excellence; our staff rank in the top three in England for the proportion who hold doctorates, who have higher degrees, and hold teaching qualifications (HESA 2022). So, you’ll learn from some of the best, helping you to be the best. We are joint first in the country for National Teaching Fellowships, which mark the UK’s best lecturers in Higher Education, winning a total of 20 since 2008 (2022 data). We've world-leading applied research groups in biomedical sciences, engineering and physical sciences, social sciences and arts and humanities. The University of Huddersfield became the Times Higher Education University of the Year in November 2013. Judges highlighted the University’s outstanding record for student satisfaction and employability with the University placed in the top ten in the country in both categories. We asked our staff and students why they thought the University of Huddersfield won the University of the Year award. Here's what they said. Employment We have an impressive record for graduate employment, with 96.5% of our undergraduate and 96.6% of postgraduate students in work or further study within fifteen months after graduating (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2019/20, UK domiciled, other activities excluded). The University places a great deal of importance on industry experience and therefore 100% of our undergraduate students have the opportunity to undertake professional work experience during their studies. Enjoyable Since 2008, £156 million has been spent on campus development making sure our students have access to some of the best facilities in the country. Our campus also has a vibrant social scene and we have a very active Students’ Union with more than 110 clubs and societies. Enterprising The University is growing its reputation as a leader in the field of enterprise. In 2012 the University was awarded the prestigious Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year and followed this up in 2013 and 2022 when it was awarded a Queen’s Awards for Enterprise: International Trade. Professor Liz Towns-Andrews, 3M Professor of Innovation, also received an individual Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion. Then in 2019 our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan, won the Examiner Business Person of the Year award. We have helped a number of graduates to set up their own successful businesses and have a fantastic Enterprise Team who are here to help students get their business ideas off the ground. The Enterprise Hub, housed in the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, is a great hub for students who wish to set up their own business and provides a great opportunity to network with other students and local businesses.

Business, marketing and international expertise is on offer to ensure that the client is able to develop a practical action plan – and a set of key performance indicators that will allow it to be assessed and scrutinised – as the organisation heads towards achieving its objectives. Our business professionals are collaborative team-workers, but they also have the strength and experience to draw our clients’ attention to areas of weakness and aims that are unachievable. We know that facing up to realities makes for a healthier business in the long term and ensures that funds and resources are focused on attainable goals. Over the past three decades, MTM has worked with big and small names in independent and state education, early years providers, higher education providers and education suppliers and investors. Communication with our clients is on-going and we constantly ask which aspects of our service they have most appreciated, and which could be developed. Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS)

By EnergyEdge - Training for a Sustainable Energy Future

About this Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) This 5 half-day Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) course covers carbon capture and geological storage of carbon dioxide. Burning fossil fuels for energy is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Most anthropogenic (man-made) carbon dioxide is emitted by coal-fired or gas-fired power plants, and significant quantities of carbon dioxide are emitted through the production and separation of carbon dioxide-rich natural gas and industries such as cement, iron and steel. Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage, or CCUS, involves the long-term storage of captured carbon dioxide emissions in subsurface geologic formations. This VILT course covers all aspects of CCUS including transport, storage and monitoring, economics and community engagement. It explores in detail the challenges of the current technology of geological storage, monitoring and verification including examples from working projects around the world. Many of these technologies are commonly employed by the petroleum industry. Successful deployment of CCUS will also require economic incentives, appropriate regulation, clarity on liability issues and acceptance by the community. These aspects of CCUS, and the corresponding opportunities for appropriately skilled organisations and individuals also will be discussed. Course Content at a Glance Context for CCS/CCUS as An Emissions-reduction Measure Principles of Geological Storage Finding Geological Storage Sites Stationary Sources of Carbon Dioxide for Capture Carbon Dioxide Capture Technologies Compression and Transport of Carbon Dioxide Economics of CCS/CCUS Community, Safety, Legal & Regulatory Issues Risk Assessment Training Objectives Upon completion of this VILT course, participants will be able to: Identify the need for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Outline the key steps in the Carbon Capture and Storage process Distinguish between reservoir rocks and sealing rocks Describe the importance of permeability and porosity to storing carbon dioxide Contrast the geological structures and trapping mechanisms for storing carbon dioxide Describe the changes in geologically stored carbon dioxide over time Outline the monitoring techniques employed to ensure the carbon dioxide is safely stored Appreciate the industrial applications of carbon dioxide capture Recognize the scale of industry required for transporting and storing carbon dioxide Describe economic considerations for CCS/CCUS Outline the economic and environmental opportunities and challenges with using carbon dioxide injection in a range of applications Explain the challenges of regulatory frameworks and public acceptance in a CCS/CCUS project Identify potential risks of a CCS/CCUS project Outline the risk assessment and management process Target Audience This VILT course is ideally suited for a technical audience - geoscientists, petroleum and chemical engineers - as well as for economists, regulators, legal staff and managers wishing to learn more about the details of both the technical, regulatory and socio-economic aspects of carbon capture and storage. Participants should have: Experience with oil and gas, coal or other energy projects Basic understanding of the energy industry Course Level Intermediate Trainer Your first expert course leader spent 18 years in the Petroleum Industry before joining academia, in both technical and managerial roles with Shell, Arco and Vico. He has received numerous awards, including Distinguished Service, Honorary member and Special Commendation awards from the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) and was AAPG's International Vice-President and recently chairman of AAPG's House of Delegates (the Associations Parliamentary body). He is an SPE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and has served as DL for several other professional organisations, including, AAPG, IPA and PESA. He is currently a Professor of Petroleum Geology and Engineering at the Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide. He holds the South Australia State Chair in Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and is also presently Distinguished Scientist of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC), having served earlier as the Storage Program Manager and Chief Scientist. Your second expert course leader has a wide and deep knowledge of major capture technologies: solvent, membrane and adsorption based technologies and has developed pathways for retrofitting CO2 capture and storage (CCS) to fossil fuel-based power plants.
