Born and raised in Birmingham, Tom has always been obsessed with making things. This obsession continued right through school and on to London where he studied furniture making. It was whilst in London his unusual style prompted his teacher to suggest he study sculpture. Taking his teachers advice after completing the year, he moved back to Birmingham and began his sculpture degree in Wolverhampton commuting daily before opting to move to West Wales School of Art - where they teach the fascinating process of bronze casting - to complete his degree. After completing his degree, Tom once again moved back to Birmingham where he continued his sculpture practise alongside working with family to further refine the carpentry and woodworking skills he learnt in London before setting up by himself a few years ago. The relatively recent decision to start offering courses came about almost by chance. The positive experience Tom had in West Wales ignited a desire to want to teach his skills to others – something that became even more apparent after taking on a couple of apprentices. However, with business being so busy it wasn’t until the apprentices highlighted the lack of woodworking courses available in the Birmingham area outside of full-time college or university courses. It was at this point Tom realised that this would be a great opportunity to give those interested in woodworking a way in without having to commit full time.

OUR BACKGROUND The story of Nova began in 2002. At that time, the founder of Nova, started his first humble furniture retail outlet of 3,000 square feet, Crawford Italia Pte Ltd, in Crawford Centre. A team of 4 staff worked for hand in hand to manage Crawford Italia which focuses on living room concept furniture retail. After a year of operations, the excellent sales performance of Crawford Italia motivated the team to consider taking on a bigger outlet to enable the business to grow. The success of the pioneer team with their accumulated experience in furniture retail & operations, in-depth understanding of the local furniture market and their entrepreneurial spirit to make things happen, propelled the team to take on a bold decision to take up a 20,000 square feet outlet in A-Z Building in Paya Lebar in 2003. That was the birth of Nova. Since then we never looked back; and by 2006, another 20,000 square feet outlet was taken up. This time round to cater to people in the West part of Singapore, in Tradehub 21 in Boon Lay Way. Following that, a 3rd outlet was opened in May 2008, in Sungei Kadut, north-west of Singapore. Our next new export outlet of 30,000 square feet in Ang Mo Kio, targeted for operations in Aug 08, will be serving residents in the North. Besides Singapore, plans are also in the pipeline to start our retail operations in Malaysia in end of 2008.

I am now Learning and Teaching Lead at the AMRC Training Centre, run by the University of Sheffield, which delivers Engineering Apprenticeships from Advanced to Degree Level. I joined WEST because I believe passionately that we need to actively change women’s perception of STEM careers – and men’s perception of women in engineering! Rooted by materials, training and history to The Black Country village of the same name for over thirty years, using clay and metal to make truly unique pieces of use. At Woodsetton two generations and an upcoming third, have made their livings as designer makers for over 50 years. David Bates, a furniture designer and manufacture, and Gill Bates an antique dealer, later came together to work with pewter. The Victorian house and workshops which housed their early business was built by the Parkes family of Iron founders who were descendants of Abraham Derby 1st, and so there has been a long line of metal working at this address. For the latter 30 years Lorraine Bates has run a pottery here using stoneware and metal to make pieces of use. The combination of these two materials has an illustrious history in the Black Country in the shape of The Ruskin Pottery who made stoneware in The Arts and Crafts tradition and ethos which is still a strong influence on our work. Lorraine Bates and the team at Woodsetton, now have a history of making for galleries, museums and exhibitions in the UK, America, Japan and Europe.

With a strong family history in the clothing industry, right back to my great great grandfather, Johannes, shown on the right (a tailor to Queen Victoria & Prince Albert, no less!) I am an internationally experienced merchant. I have worked in Retail and Wholesale for internationally recognised brands such as Levi Strauss, Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, Barbour and Ellesse. I started out at the age of 18 as a trainee buyer for a European Clothing Wholesaler, Campari International Plc, where I was mentored by the managing director and my father John, in all aspects of design, product development, sampling, sourcing, buying, brand franchises and major account selling. This led to the opportunity of travelling the world extensively around Europe, the Far East and the United States, providing me with a rich understanding of different cultures and the ways of doing business on the international stage. From there I went on to live and work in Germany, then back to the UK where I set up a designer fashion store business with a good friend in Clapham, South London. I then proceeded to work for Timberland EMEA out of their UK EHQ; I consulted for the Pentland Group (with the Ellesse brand); then to Levi Strauss Europe as Design & Merchandise Director for Dockers EMEA; next to Simonside, near Newcastle to consult on the J Barbour & Sons clothing brand; before moving overseas once again to work as Senior Merchandise Director Menswear for Tommy Hilfiger Europe, in Amsterdam. On returning home once more, I then began working on small consulting projects. That led me to become, a creative industry focussed business adviser initially, with LSBC, as part of a London based business advisory team. From my experience/background, I have developed strong business insights and an entrepreneurial approach to developing business strategies, as I work with both new and established businesses. These businesses include fashion creatives, artists, service industry professionals and a multitude of on-line and off-line line enterprises in the food & beverage, tech, furniture, beauty, travel, sports and well-being sectors. In assisting in the process of setting up a business by developing business plans; financial projections; product management strategies and gaining access to business funding, I have developed a broad skill set that is well appreciated by those who work/have worked with me (please check out my client testimonials). I now also work as a proud Partner of the British Library where I deliver quality and popular business planning and business development workshops. I have also worked on the Reset Restart programme started as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. I also work as a mentor on programmes such as the UK government’s HELP TO GROW Programme, operating as a consultant engaged by Brunel University London.
