Falls Women’s Centre was established in 1982 in West Belfast by local women in order to improve the quality of life for women and their families living in areas of extreme deprivation and most affected by the conflict. It is based in West Belfast, a community recognised as one of the poorest in Western Europe. The Falls Women’s Centre was the first of its kind in the area and has continually worked to raise awareness within the community and with statutory agencies on issues that affect women’s lives. The Falls Women's Centre is a community development organisation which, through long term experience and expertise, responds quickly and appropriately to community needs. “These needs are not static but change and evolve as communities themselves change and evolve over time”. The Falls Women’s Centre is a women-only centre. It is staffed and managed entirely by women and is seen as an important support for the community locally, nationally and internationally. It is used as a referral point by community, voluntary and statutory agencies. The Falls Women’s Centre/Ionad Mhná na bhFál is involved in the economic development of the community and continues to support women’s development within the area through the provision of training, education, childcare, advice, advocacy, counselling, health and well-being.

The workshops are an excellent opportunity for adults/children to interact and socialise with their peers, through fun activities. Some of the activities that can be undertaken with the clay are designed so that individuals can have a go, on an individual basis, at creating with the clay. But it can also be used as a group craft experience too, where everyone contributes to a masterpiece. The latter approach is great for building up social interaction within individuals and for them to learn about team work, sharing and cooperation. It’s also such a sense of achievement for them to be involved in a group project and to feel very pleased with their contribution, however small or large. Thus, increasing self-esteem, and self-worth as a result. Taking part in these workshops can have significant benefits. For example, holding the craft tools, wire or scissors in their hands can help with fine-tuning motor skills. It also helps improve coordination and strength which will have long-lasting benefits, such as helping ability to write and use a pen. Working with the clay can also reinforce colour recognition, colour mixing, proportions, sequencing, listening skills and team work, communication and social skills. Workshops are fun and enjoyable for all participants and will help to boost an individual’s confidence in their own abilities.

OUR STORY The Raphael Studios opened in the summer of 2020, with online Yoga classes hosted from our main Studio by teacher, Bridget. Designed to be a welcoming, calm and versatile space the studios are now open and offer a range of holistic activities including yoga, meditation, sound therapy, pottery and psychological therapy. Owner Bridget is a trained Hatha and Yin Yoga instructor and meditation coach. She has experience in tailoring classes to suit individual needs – and offers a range of classes for the individual and group, both on-line and in person. She passionately believes that yoga is for everyone and is equally comfortable designing a class to suit the age and level of fitness. Bridget is also a Psychiatrist, EMDR consultant and training facilitator. Our studios are located on our family farm in Ballinderry Upper, just 20 miles from Belfast. The Irish Baptist College was established in Dublin in 1892 by Hugh D. Brown who had close connections with Charles H. Spurgeon, the renowned Baptist preacher in London at that time. In 1964 the College moved to Belfast before relocating to Moira in 2003. Courses provided by the College have been accredited since the 1970s. Graduates of the College are currently located across the globe in a variety of ministry scenarios. In addition to its history, students will also benefit from its location. The College is located in Moira which offers a semi-rural, secluded, quiet and peaceful setting in which to study. It is however just a couple of minutes away from the motorway and is therefore easily accessible from all parts of the island. We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Director Paul Smyth, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for ground breaking youth work. I am thrilled to have taken up the post of Executive Director with Politics in Action – and I want to start by congratulating my predecessor Patricia O’Lynn on her election to the Northern Ireland Assembly. We live in a turbulent time for politics around the world, nationally and locally – and this makes the work of supporting young people’s role as active citizens more challenging and even more important. We are emerging from a global pandemic which has put unprecedented restrictions on the lives and freedoms of young people, and which has impacted their learning, their social lives, their relationships and for some their mental health. Politics in Action responded proactively to these challenges by moving workshops online and ensuring continuity. I am optimisticwe can return to largely face-to-face delivery of our programmes with young people in schools and other settings, and can find new ways of engaging with more young people and in particular those who are not normally invited into conversations about politics and citizenship. Much of what we already do is in collaboration with schools and with other youth organisations. I see so much potential for additional collaborations that allow our little charity to punch above its weight. One of the many attractions of the role is the excellent Board of Trustees who provide strong governance, leadership and vision for Politics in Action. They bring significant social and political capital to the charity and use it in the interests of young people and our shared future. I would love to hear your ideas about how Politics in Action should direct our energies over the coming months and years. I spent the first half of my career in a thick fog, and of course I got lost and ended up somewhere I didn’t want to be. I felt lost, miserable, and what little confidence I had was waning by the minute. I also became a total bore. I was consumed by how unhappy I was. I couldn’t even apply for another job because I didn’t know what I’d do. So I felt stuck. I had, by many measures, a great job, a great salary, in a great company. But I was in the wrong place. I was ambitious with nowhere to direct it, so it evolved into frustration! It took a fair bit of effort to turn it around, which started with working out what I wanted and developing some much needed confidence to get there. Thankfully I had a good basis with my Psychology degree, throw in a mountain of self-help books, a coaching and NLP qualification, a mountain of training on presenting and the like…and a real desire to build my brand, visbility, and expertise, meant I built a reputation for business and leadership transformation. That experience of having a big impact, being recognised, and having real influence made me feel like I could achieve anything. My values, purpose, and strengths were all aligned and I felt amazing! It came as quite a shock then to be confronted by my inner feminist one day. I’d had my first daughter (I now have 2), and was having a cheeky nap. You know how it is, I love my sleep! So for the first time ever, I sat her down in front of Nickelodeon so I could get some zzz’s. I was happily snoozing away when the advertising started to filter through to me. The ‘boys toys’ were all exciting and adventurous. The ‘girls toys’ made me want to vomit. All about being pretty and vacuous. I jumped off the sofa with an ‘oh hell no’! Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been driven by fairness. I think it may be because I’m the youngest of 4 and nothing ever seemed fair from my standpoint. My sister tells me of times I used to fight for gay rights at the dinner table and I was always arguing for what I felt was right (because it is). The one thing I’d never have called myself back then, or until that day, was a feminist. No, I’d been well trained by society to see feminists as embarrassing, hairy, dungaree-wearing angry women who made a show of themselves. This moment set a chain of events into action that lead me to start a political party where I live, and gave me the direction for the business I would later start.
