The School offers classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, Drama, Musical Theatre, Jazz and Acro Tec, a form of gymnastic dance movement. All Classes are held at the Queensbury Methodist Church Hall, Beverley Drive, Edgware, Middlesex, HA8 5ND Currently, the syllabi of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) are studied in Ballet, Tap, Modern Theatre and Jazz. Students are coached for examinations from Pre-primary to Advanced level and are also given the opportunity for free expression and improvisation. The LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) syllabus is followed in the drama section. BSPA is a registered LAMDA examinations centre so we are now able to hold the exams at our school. During their time at the school, Students are given the opportunity to take part in School Shows, Boot Camps, Summer Schools, Theatre trips and events such as the London New Year’s Day Parade. The Beverley School of Dancing was founded in January 1961, offering classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Ballroom, to boys and girls from 3 years upwards. In 1999, the school changed its name to the Beverley School of Performing Arts, with Drama and Jazz classes being added to the curriculum. In 2009, due to popular demand, singing and street dance were added to compliment the full range of performing arts. In 2021, the school celebrated it’s 60th Anniversary. A memory book was presented to the founder Miss Pear, a Virtual Show was performed and a party with invited guests was held at the Queensbury Methodist Church Hall, where the School has held classes since 1961. 2022 promises to be yet another ground breaking year for the school, with student numbers increasing and exciting new classes being introduced.

OUR DANCING, OUR TEACHING The essence of our dancing is the communication between two people which is born in the embrace and lives and breathes through the music. In our teaching, we focus on the skills that will enable our students to create and enjoy their own dance: musicality, and a clear understanding of the concepts of leading and following. Our foundations are traditional but our methods embrace modern techniques and natural, organic movement. There are many different variations and theories in the history of tango, both the music and the dance, all of which tell the story of it's dramatic evolution over the past century and it's exportation from Argentina to the rest of the world. Today, as well as in Argentina, one can dance tango in some of the most diverse corners of the world, from Europe to Japan, Australia, USA, Turkey, Egypt and many other places thanks to it's current revival. There are various styles of tango but all share a common root in the tango embrace and the wonderful connection between two people and of course the captivating music. It is largely a social dance based on improvisation and enjoyed by people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Independent Dance (ID) supports the development of dance through radical enquiry, learning, community-building and audience engagement. Based at Siobhan Davies Studios in London, ID is a research engine and ‘home’ organisation for a growing community of practitioners in the UK and around the world. It has been artist and female-led since 1984. Our public programme supports a wide range of accessible and interdisciplinary approaches to dance, somatics, improvisation and choreography. Co-designed with UK/ international artists and partner organisations, this far-reaching programme includes classes, talks, workshops, research, digital initiatives and festivals. ID also bridges higher education and professional spheres, leading on MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional in partnership with Trinity Laban and Siobhan Davies Studios. Our aim is to generate a diverse and dynamic ‘community of practice’ which is not limited to one place or location and to agitate for positive change and justice within ID, the arts and society. House of Imagination provides a range of spaces for children and young people to collaborate with creative professionals -it is a home for improvisation, creativity and innovation and a place to make those things visible to an international audience through research. House of Imagination (HOI) is a research organisation with a focus on children’s and young people’s creative and critical thinking. In practice HOI uses action research to plan and deliver innovative programmes that enable children to shape their lives through creative activity and schools to change their practices through professional development and school-based activity. At its heart is co-enquiry between children, teachers and creative professionals. HOI is driven by a desire for change in both children’s lives and in schools, focusing on an exploration of the possibilities that creativity offers. Children need more opportunities to develop their creativity and to experiment and teachers need more support to integrate these skills. Through research and dissemination HOI provides evidence for change and helps to build a strong cultural ecology that in turn supports children, schools and creative professionals.

Juliana is one of the leading teachers and performers in the UK of Raqs Sharqi, the classical and folkloric dance styles of Egypt. She has a well-established teaching practice in London and holds regular workshops and residentials in the UK and abroad. Juliana originally trained with Suraya Hilal and co-managed the Hilal School of Raqs Sharqi until the mid-1990s. Alongside her studies of Raqs Sharqi Juliana took a 3 year degree course in Contemporary Dance, Performance Skills, Choreography and the Visual Arts at Middlesex University. She is now training to become a Feldenkrais practitioner. Since 1997 Juliana has been a key member of the Raqs Sharqi Society. Juliana Brustik’s unique and creative teaching style is informed by her knowledge of a wide range of body disciplines, including contemporary dance, Feldenkrais, Contact improvisation, Pilates and theatrical voice and bodywork. Sheffield Jazz runs a Saturday Morning Workshop providing an opportunity for people who play an instrument or sing to learn about and explore the theory and practice of jazz improvisation in a supportive group environment. The Workshop is now in its 40th year! There are currently five groups running each Saturday morning which are loosely graded from beginners to more experienced, each under the guidance of a tutor who is a jazz musician with wide experience of playing and teaching. Twice a year a concert will be arranged where each group will perform material that has been worked on during the preceding sessions. Who’s it for? Sheffield Jazz Workshop is intended for adults but is open to under-18s with parental consent, provided they are able to participate and behave appropriately in the group. Individual instrument tuition is not provided – some basic ability on your chosen instrument is required. Some familiarity with music theory would be helpful but is not a requirement. Anyone interested in exploring jazz improvisation is welcome to join in. The best way to find out if it’s right for you is to give it a try, including just listening and observing without an instrument at first if you so wish. The Workshop does not own or provide any equipment so you need to bring your own gear. Keyboard players need to bring an electric keyboard as the rooms we use don’t have pianos. Guitarists and bass players will need to bring an amp. Vocalists will need a mic and an amp unless you have a very strong voice! Bear in mind you’ll probably be in a room with 6 – 10 saxophones or brass instruments and need enough amplification to be heard in that context. Everyone else bring your instrument (and a music stand plus pencil and paper). Where, when and how much? Location: King Edward’s Upper School, Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2PW (near to the Hallamshire Hospital and King Edward’s Swimming Pool – car park access from Glossop Rd or Newbould Lane) Time: 10.00 am –12.30 pm on Saturdays, most Saturdays during school term time. If you are new to the workshop, please come along on a Saturday at 9.40 and someone will help you find a suitable group. We are a group of teachers, musicians and technologists who specialise in composition, improvisation and performance using iPads. Ben Sellers and Travis Snyder began running music workshops with iPads in a Hackney community centre in 2011, developing an approach that combined outstanding musical outcomes with implicit development of musicianship and theory. They transferred this approach to both formal mainstream and SEND/ALN contexts, codifying their methods into what became the 2014 textbook ‘Teaching Music with Garageband for iPad’, and a popular teacher training scheme. In 2016, Travis returned to California to become the head of Assistive Technology for the San Francisco District School Board. 2017 saw the publication of several new resources, including a second edition of the Garageband textbook and an increased focus on training partnerships with Music Education Hubs. Since 2018 we have gained an increasingly strong reputation as SEND/ALN specialists, working with MEHs up and down the country to improve provision through co-delivery and bespoke training and resources, including a complete ‘SEN/D Curriculum’ with Leicester-Shire Music Service, and a set of projects for the Charanga education platform. We were nominated twice in the 2019 ‘Music Teacher Awards for Excellence’. Though our reputation has grown, we remain a small and focussed team, working hard to develop in young people the skill, desire and drive to use music to enhance their lives.
