Cambridge Open College has been providing distance learning, home study, open learning and correspondence courses since 2006. The College’s founders have more than 25 years combined expertise in education generally, and distance learning (also known as home study) in particular. Few distance-learning establishments have more experience at a “hands on” level; we’ve all been tutors and assessors in the sector for many years. Heavy investment in state-of-the-art technology has typified the College’s development, particularly in its more recent history. Our systems are second to none, and make your learning experience as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible. The College provides more than 120 courses across 5 faculties, successful completion of which result in nationally recognised qualifications listed on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF), or certification for specialist bespoke (unregulated) qualifications. Most are endorsed or accredited by some of the UK’s most prolific Awarding Organisations. The college’s students come from all walks of life, and undertake the courses for a wide range of reasons, including career enhancement, continuous professional development (CPD), and studying purely for fun to expand their existing knowledge of a hobby or stimulating subject. The managing partner, Steven Chambers, has over 30 years strategic and operational experience as a manager and Business Consultant. He was one of the first managers in Northern Ireland to receive the daunting accreditation of Chartered Manager in 2005. This was achieved through a demanding process of independent feedback on his performance. In 2000, he was awarded the BT National Investors in People Key Champion Award for the quality of his advisory services and, in 2001, he then steered a public body of 4000+ people to Cabinet Office Beacon status, one of only twenty such bodies across the UK. Amongst his professional qualifications, he is a Fellow of both the Chartered Management Institute and Institute of Leadership & Management, Member of the Institute of Consultants and Institute of Learning, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and a trained, PRINCE2, project manager. He is approved to deliver adult training at a Further Education level across his specialist services and act as an Assessor (A1). Steven has over 25 years operational history in security risk management and has attended the highly acclaimed Security Risk Management course at Cranfield University. These professional qualifications are backed by lengthy experience in delivering operational and resource management, corporate and emergency planning, employment practice, performance management, learning/development and security risk management. He has a track record of designing and implementing multi-million pound efficiency programmes in the public sector and providing innovative business development solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Leeds Library is the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the UK and was founded in 1768. Annual membership from £66. Founded in 1768, The Leeds Library is a gem of a heritage library and the oldest surviving subscription library of its kind in the British Isles. We have a fascinating history. We’re Leeds’s oldest cultural institution—a thriving hub of creativity, ideas and inspiration and a book lover’s paradise! Amongst our founding members were eminent doctors, surgeons, clergymen, leading industrialists and businessmen, alongside members of The Royal Society. Revd Dr Joseph Priestley, our first secretary and most likely the primary driving force behind the Library’s creation, was perhaps the most famous of these men. A leading enlightenment thinker, radical preacher, and Fellow of The Royal Society, Priestley was celebrated for his experiments concerning electricity and oxygen—and the invention of carbonated water! In the beginning, the Library occupied a back room at Joseph Ogle’s bookshop on Kirkgate and he became the first librarian. When he died in 1774, his daughter, Mary, was appointed Librarian and remained so for another 37 years until her death in 1813. Over this period, the Library proved to be so successful that it outgrew this modest first home and moved further along Kirkgate to the Rotation Office. A few years later and a move to new premises was required once again to house the ever-growing collection of books. In 1808, the Library moved to a new purpose-built home on Commercial Street where we remain to this day. Built by Thomas Johnson, the town’s leading architect, the grade II* listed building is a rare surviving example of a Georgian public library.

The Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) is a network for people and organisations involved in small business and entrepreneurship research, policy, practice, education, support and advice. ISBE’s members are its most valuable resource, offering vast reserves of knowledge and research. Through events and activities, ISBE aims to disseminate this research to business owners, policy makers and business support organisations where it can have genuine impact and inform change, and to share these resources with academics, researchers and educators. Through ISBE’s network and activities, academics, business owners, policy makers and those who work in business support are able to connect and form beneficial working relationships. Our Purpose To enable excellence in small business and entrepreneurship across our research, policy, practice and learning communities Our Values are CLEAR Community Looking forward Ethical Authoritative Relevant Our Vision To connect our membership and their communities to pursue excellence in small business and entrepreneurship Our History How it all Began: ISBE’s meetings started in the mid 70s shortly after the publication of the Bolton Report in 1971 which led to the emergence of entrepreneurship as a legitimate public policy target and focus for academic research. By 1977 these ad hoc, informal meetings of the early small business and entrepreneurship researchers had become a full annual and international conference which is still running over 40 years later. The Institute is formed: Originally an annual conference hosted by a different university each year, it was not until 1989 that the researchers formally organised as the UK Enterprise Management and Research Association (UKEMRA). Three years later, in 1992, the name was changed to Institute for Small Business Affairs (ISBA). In 2004, recognising the increased focus on entrepreneurship in policy and research, the organisation became the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE). Our past activities and achievements: Through the years as well as the ISBE conference, ISBE has held many regional events in the form of doctoral work shops, work shops on all aspects of entrepreneurial education and research, policy think-tanks and debates in response to government iniatives and other contemporary issues, and practical, skill building work shops for small business practitioners. ISBE has produced many publications such as books, reports, research papers and conference outcomes. In addition to this ISBE provided a network for those in the field of small business and entrepreneurship allowing collaboration, debate and sharing of valuable insight, knowledge and best practice. In this way ISBE sought to contribute to the world of enterprise by disseminating knowledge and skills, platforming the latest research, supporting entrepreneurial education and encouraging debate.
