Sheffield's strong game heritage is also celebrated in the Museum, hosting games from the city and surrounding Yorkshire areas. Alongside weekly openings throughout the year, the Museum is open every day during the school holidays, where visitors can enjoy additional drop-in workshops developed by the NVM’s award winning Learning Team. From designing a videogame character to programming a mini-robot, the activities are both fun and varied! Natural dyes can be made using a variety of plant materials including leaves, flowers, roots, tree barks and kitchen waste. The use of alum and iron as mordants can also extend the variety of the dye colours. Throughout history, people have dyed their textiles using common, locally available materials, this can still be a very satisfying way of adding colour to fabric and yarn to use in your own craft project. Natural Dyes Workshop In this workshop we will make natural dyes from a variety of sources and use alum and iron mordants. We will dye yarn and fabric in the heated dye pots, using tried and tested recipes. We will use the dyed yarn and fabric from our dye pots to produce a colourful sample swatch, for you to keep as a record and use for future reference. This workshop aims to teach you the basics of natural dyeing for you to gain enough knowledge and confidence to continue natural dyeing independently. All materials and equipment are provided. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy, or bring an apron. You may also like to bring a small garment, like a t-shirt, a similar size piece of fabric, or some yarn to put in one of the dye pots.

These are listed in the right-hand column. My professional development is continuing as I work towards Chartered Coaching Psychologist status. My professional career includes 9 years as a commissioned officer in the British Army, reaching the rank of major by 30 years old and fulfilling roles as an HR Director/Company Secretary of an infantry battalion (1st Battalion The Green Howards) on operations in Northern Ireland and Bosnia-Herzegovina. I led the first-ever British Army expedition to Lake Baikal, the World’s largest freshwater lake, in Siberia, Russia in 1995, lasting 3 months. After leaving the Forces, I held operations management roles in Ernst & Young, Cap Gemini and Accenture, before working for a number of boutique psychology consultancies, including Chimp Management, a company closely involved with various Team GB Olympic sports including cycling, swimming, taekwondo and canoeing. I am supervised by an EMCC and ICF-accredited supervisor. I am also a qualified Mental Health First Aider, which compliments my skills workshops on managing stress and building resilience. For my own wellbeing, I enjoy running, hill walking and real ale, occasionally combining all three by taking part in mountain marathons followed by a well-earned break in a local pub to refuel and recover. I enjoy reading history and biographies (as well as psychology, it goes without saying!), and I try to keep my German and Russian above the level of embarrassed British tourist asking for directions to the beach.
