St Bonaventure’s has a long and distinguished history. Our school has been providing the very best education for Roman Catholic boys in this area since before 1875. The school was founded on its current site in 1877 by the Franciscan Friars, making St Bonaventure’s one of the oldest Catholic boys’ schools in the country – only the London Oratory is older. 2017 saw us celebrating 140 years of education in Forest Gate and although the World has changed immensely in that time, one thing remains the same and that is the love and care each student receives every single day by dedicated staff and teachers. In July 2014 the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brentwood conducted their own Inspection of the school. They also found that we are Outstanding in all areas. I am very proud to be associated with a school that is a successful as St Bonaventure’s and I thank all students and staff, both current and previous for all their hard work, effort and commitment to their Church and their education. This is a school that every member of the school community feels privileged to be associated with. We support charities on a local, national and international level. Our boys give freely of their time and their money. Our CAFOD group raises over £2000 each year and we support Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society, Caritas Anchor House, Richard House Children’s Hospice and other charities.

The site of Mayflower High school has a rich history since long before the school itself opened. First inhabited in the Iron Age, burial mounds still exist in Norsey Woods, but the town that would eventually become Billericay became important when a Roman settlement was formed following the defeat of the local Trinovante tribe. During the Saxon period a now traditional form of local government came into being. The area was then owned by King Harold's father, who is buried locally, who named the fortified settlement Burghstede. The area then passed into the ownership of William the Conqueror's half brother. When he fell out of favour, William gave the lands to the Cistercian monks. In 1381, men from Billericay joined the Peasant’s Revolt against the poll tax. The rebels were pursued by the Kings armies and a battle ensued in Norsey Woods, adjacent to the modern Mayflower site. Why a ship? Whilst Billericay had become a flourishing commercial centre during the reign of Henry VIII, religious persecution during the reign of James I of England (James VI of Scotland) led some inhabitants to embark on the famous Mayflower voyage to America. The expedition was led by Christopher Martin, born in Great Burstead who is believed to have lived in what is now known as the Old Chantry in Billericay High Street and a meeting of the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ is said to have taken place in Billericay prior to the sailing In September 1620, the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, a port on the southern coast of England. Nearly 40 of the passengers were Protestant Separatists (they called themselves “Saints”) who hoped to establish a new church free from religious persecution, in the so-called New World. It is the Mayflower ship that is represented on the school’s badge.

We love Leamington Spa in the UK, and we love being part of a fantastic church community that is really seeking to make a difference. The church has a rich history upon which we are building for future generations. The church building, formerly known as St. Michael’s, was built around 1900 and was the chapel to a girl’s reformatory school. During the 1930s, many families in Leamington Spa were becoming Christians, and so a Pentecostal movement bought the building, using it for regular church services. The church, now called Life Community Church, became part of a network of Pentecostal churches called the AoG (Assemblies of God), which is made up of around 600 churches in Great Britain, and is the sixth largest denomination worldwide. In 2012, there was a leadership transition and David and Leanne Bolton felt the call of God to lead the church and start an exciting journey of repurposing it. Their dream today, like those in the past, is to see many more families in Leamington Spa and across the globe, coming to faith in Jesus. Today, we are a growing, life-giving church for all ages and backgrounds, and God is drawing people to us from all nationalities. LCC exists to help people grow in a relationship with Jesus Christ. LLA will help you find and exceed your limits, teaching you a martial art honed and made perfect through Europe’s many centuries of warfare. SIMPLE YET SOPHISTICATED Every technique shown is the simplest answer for the threat given, and the most effective way to attack and cover in one motion. What at first appears to be more complex, you will soon learn is the simplest way to deal with a more complex threat. POWERFUL BODY MECHANICS Applicable to most armed and unarmed martial arts. This art will teach you to fight using your entire body, maximising your power and honing your instinctive responses. LOGIC AND GEOMETRY At the LLA we use a simple four step training method. Each technique is based on logic and the demands of the situation, rather than clever or showy moves; it just happens that some techniques look damned good. The method breaks down each set of techniques into four steps, each student only progressing to the next part of the technique when they have mastered the first. This means that as a beginner you can train with more advanced practitioners straight away and never feel left behind, while allowing you to advance at your own pace. Variations in the four steps allow for overlaps and cross- referencing of responses and pressures, thus building your understanding and repertoire of combat simply and quickly. INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY One thing we are at pains to point out at the LLA is the multi-cultural nature of these arts. Manuals such as I.33 & Paulus Hector Mair’s Fechbuch (amongst many others), show women and men, white and black training together and it is also known that several masters of these arts were Jewish. This diversity is part of our art and history; we feel it should be a proud part of its future. WiseUp Team Building prides itself on delivering team building activities that engage participants. We encourage young people to develop new skills in a fun environment. It is our belief that outdoor education should be accessible to everybody. As a consequence, we are continually developing new methods of delivery to guarantee that all participants’ needs are met. Who We Are Founded in 2011 by Richard and Alexandra Wise, WiseUp Team Building is a mobile company. We provide fun and educational activities all over the country by bringing the equipment to participants. The company started with just one van going out and delivering activity days. Now on our busiest days, we have up to nine teams out all over the country. Richard and Alexandra have over 35 years combined experience working in the outdoor education sector. Working both abroad and in the UK gave this dynamic duo a vast amount of experience working with young people. Additional years at both privately owned and government run establishments meant running activity days for students of all different backgrounds. Whilst working at a large multi activity centre, Richard and Alexandra realised the demand for an outreach service. Chatting to teachers highlighted that bringing young people off site was becoming difficult and certainly more expensive. As a result, Richard and Alexandra founded WiseUp Team Building. A fully mobile service offering the same activities run at outdoor centres to schools across the UK. Running fun and challenging activity days on school grounds significantly reduces the cost. Consequently, this means students from lower income families who can’t usually afford traditional outdoor centre visits can participate. By coming to you, WiseUp removes the complicated planning involved taking pupils off site, which is always a good thing for everyone. Most importantly, students in both Primary and Secondary schools are able to access quality outdoor education. The Team A core operational team support Richard and Alexandra with the logistics of managing WiseUp. Our fantastic activities team uses their years of experience in the outdoor industry to develop new and exciting products. WiseUp is all about innovation, not imitation. Each year, we hire and train additional instructors to deliver our activity days to the highest standard. Many of our Lead Instructors return each season. As a result, it’s not surprising to see some familiar faces returning to your school year after year. WiseUp just would not be complete without our hardworking maintenance team. They spend hours during every season making sure every piece of equipment is completely safe and beautifully painted. This results in our kit coming to schools looking great. National Awards WiseUp Team Building is often recognised for its achievements. Over the years, we have won a number of awards. For example, in 2015 Richard and Alexandra won The Kent Business Award. Previously Alexandra was listed as one of the top 30 under 30 entrepreneurs in Kent. The History A significant feature of a WiseUp Team Building activity day is our distinctive vans. I’m Xuan (pronounced Sawn). I was born in Vietnam from Chinese Vietnamese parents and I am proud to be one of the original Vietnamese boat people now living here in the UK. In the late 1970s, the aftermath of the Vietnam war and the growing oppression of the ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam forced my family to flee their home. We left Vietnam on a small overcrowded and ramshackle boat that wasn’t fit for the open water and sailed the perilous South China Sea to Hong Kong. At age 2 my first and only memory of Hong Kong is a hazy image of the orange skies. After 6 months we left the tropical heat of Hong Kong and immigrated to the cold, or you could say dreich (Scots for dreary) climate of the Scottish winter. We lived in the quiet outskirts of Glasgow for four years before moving and settling in London, which was a hubbub of culture and activity. By the age of 14 I had lived in four vastly different countries and each of these places have influenced the person that I am and the food I love to cook and eat. My own cooking adventure started at an early age – washing the rice grains for steamed rice and undertaking the long and meticulous task of cleaning and snapping the tails off bean sprouts for my parents spring rolls. This you can say was my training for the future food lover in me – or feeder. As a child of refugees, love was often shown through food rather than words. From these duties and by always keeping my belly full, my parents quietly passed on their own rich food heritage and family history to me through the years. In my 20’s I became a sushi chef at a vibrant restaurant in Central London, and spent 4 years learning the meticulous art of preparing, filleting and slicing fish for sushi, maki, nigiris and sashimi. I have since run a number of supper clubs in London and Dundee, including a charity Chinese hotpot that raised over £2,000 for the charity – Sarcoma UK. This year, I’ve taken the next leap in my food adventure and launched my online cookalong classes, which have been great fun and allow me to reach new like minded food enthusiasts far and wide. Casual Rice is all about sharing my love for food and my own culinary heritage through authentic but informal Vietnamese and Chinese meals I devoured when growing up, with Japanese influences from my sushi training days. The name Casual Rice comes from The Mandarin Way, a book by the inspirational Cecilia Sun Yun Chiang. A pioneering woman who in the 1960’s opened one of the first authentic Chinese restaurant in North America. In her book she writes “when we sat down to meals as a family, we adopted a much simpler mode of eating … such meals were known as “pien- fan”, “casual rice” or what might be termed home cooking”. As the saying goes, food is a universal language that brings people together. I am hoping through this website and cookalong classes I am able to share personal recipes from my own home, that you can make and share in your homes with your loved ones. Thanks for visiting.
