Inspiring a deep, flexible understanding of mathematics through rich, diverse learning experiences. I See Maths deepens children's mathematical experiences. Resources and training make learning visual and deep, helping children to build understanding through a range of purposefully sequenced learning experiences. The I See Maths resources provide a range of opportunities for children to deepen their understanding, applying their skills flexibly in a range of contexts. I See Maths allows teachers to put problem-solving at the heart of the mathematics curriculum. Training shows how children can learn to understand the deep structure of different problem-solving tasks and how children can make connections between different problem-solving experiences. Using the I See Maths resources, teachers can immerse children in a wide range of exciting, thought-provoking challenges. NCETM-accredited training events, led by Gareth Metcalfe, give teachers the knowledge, skills and resources to deepen and personalise the mathematics curriculum. Training focuses on showing concepts visually, breaking learning down into small, purposefully sequenced steps and providing children with extended, challenging learning experiences. Gareth has been teaching since 2004 and is a former Assistant Headteacher. Currently he is working in a range of schools, teaching classes from Nursery-Y6, helping schools to put reasoning and problem-solving at the heart of learning. I wish you a very warm welcome to our website. I am a practising teacher who has over 20 years experience in the secondary education sector, my specialist subject being science. Currently, I hold the position of Deputy Headteacher in an 11-16 secondary school with responsibility for curriculum development. Since being a senior leader, I have gained significant experience in leading whole school professional development and the quality assurance of the quality of education. I have been awarded a distinction in a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and in doing so have carried out research relating to curriculum and social justice. I strongly believe in: Creating an engaging, challenging curriculum which allows all children to flourish and achieve their potential. Inclusion Expert’s founder, Daniel Sobel, is an internationally respected leader in inclusive education and has advised the DfE, the EU and governments abroad. Daniel is a well-known speaker, writes regularly for publications including Headteacher Update and The Guardian, and is the author of several books including Narrowing the Attainment Gap. Daniel left school with no A Levels and read his first book aged 18. Gradually he fell in love with study and managed to secure a place on a Master’s course in Education Psychology. He went on to take four graduate courses in Psychology and Education, eventually running out of money in the middle of doctoral training. Daniel moved to full time teaching and quickly became a SENCO. Dismayed by how much of the job was pointless meetings and paperwork, he started designing tools to better support his students. During a stint as Assistant Head he continued to develop simple systems to help teachers manage information and maximise the impact of their interventions. Realising that many teachers were struggling with inclusion, that his ideas really worked, and that there was an opportunity to make a difference to children across the country, Daniel left teaching, somewhat hesitantly, to form Inclusion Expert. Over the last few years the company has grown rapidly to encompass a team of experienced practitioners who share Daniel’s vision that every child deserves the opportunity to achieve their potential, regardless of needs, background or ability.

Jackie’s unexpected journey from teaching assistant to becoming Headteacher of a large secondary school has taught her what is possible for all of us. Throughout her career in primary and secondary schools, she has had a passion for empowering children and colleagues to find their innate resilience through managing their thinking. This is because she has experienced for herself what happens when we develop the habits of fearless thinking. For this work both nationally and internationally, she was awarded an OBE in 2002. Following headship, she started her own training and coaching company working with a wide range of school and business leaders and their teams. Jackie believes coaching is the most powerful way to help leaders thrive at work and at home. Her own experience has shown her that challenging our thinking habits can make us successful, healthy and happy – in mind and body. Jackie’s inspiring self-development book ‘GROW – Change your mindset change your life’ has recently been republished in the USA and she has written many other books for teachers and school leaders including ‘The Complete Learner’s Toolkit’ which offers lessons in mind management for young people. Jackie loves to deliver inspiring keynotes and workshops that share her own journey and the strategies that create lasting change. Her one to one coaching, delivered in person or online, is truly transformational and includes online support and follow up resources that embed thinking habits that make us stronger and wiser.

With over 25 years of experience in the fields of training and leadership development in both the retail and education sectors I know my stuff. My leadership career began when I worked for a bookshop chain in central London, working my way up to the role of store manager at branches in Baker Street, Earls Court and Holborn at the age of 20. This was followed by a period working as a training manager for Tesco at their first central London store on Oxford Street. My success in this role led to me being seconded to support the opening of Tesco’s flagship store in Kensington, where I helped to lead the recruitment and training of all new staff in preparation for the store’s launch. In 1999 I entered the education sector. I started as a volunteer in a pre-school, then secured a job as a Learning Support Assistant and eventually retrained as a class teacher. In my second year of teaching I took on a curriculum leadership role, which at the time was an unusual move for a new teacher. I’ve spent the last 19 years developing my career and I’m currently the headteacher of a primary school in south London. In 2014 I set up my own publishing company 9:10 Publishing. This was born out of an observation that there were very few books for young black people which were written from a black British perspective. Rather than rely on traditional publishing houses to take up my ideas, I looked into what was required to do it myself. As a result Letters to a Young Generation was born. The first book was aimed at boys and in 2016 I published another edition for girls. Visit the 9:10 Publishing website to find out more. With Grammar schools in nearby St Albans, that meant that it was in reality a secondary modern school although as its pupils reached school leaving age (15 in those days) it soon became apparent that many wanted to stay on into the fifth year and take ‘O’ levels so that facility was provided. The school opened with three teaching blocks – still recognizable as ‘B’ block, ‘C’ block and the hall, gym etc. where the staff room and offices were. There were three forms, one in each of the second, third and fourth years and three first year forms, making a total of 179 pupils. There were ten teachers including the first head teacher – Mr Arthur Foxwell. The school was organised into four houses – Braille, Campbell, Grenfell and Nightingale – thus providing a competitive element for the popular Sports Day and, from 1961 when the town’s pool was opened, the Swimming Gala. After three years, the school had reached its planned maximum size but often exceeded that over subsequent years due to its increasing popularity with local residents as well as those in Wheathampstead and Redbourn. Now we receive many pupils from the other villages – Markyate, Flamstead and Kimpton. This is partly due to the closure of smaller secondary schools in Redbourn and Wheathampstead so that the ‘economies of scale’ can be taken advantage of, full comprehensive provision within Hertfordshire and also due to parental preference. Mr Foxwell retired in 1976 after 20 years as Headteacher and Mr Turnbull took over for 2 years, being followed by Mr Haydon Luke who stayed for 17 years. Andy Cunningham stayed for 6 years and was replaced by Mr Nick Daymond who also stayed for 6 years until he was succeeded by the current Headteacher, Mr Alan Henshall. At various times in between, the Deputy Heads have held the fort – Mr Lucas, Mr Surtees and Ms Linda Graham – all contributing to the continuity and stability that have been part of the Roundwood ethos. Roundwood21There have been many changes over the past 60 years resulting in upheaval and disruption – increasingly frequent times when the site appeared more like a building site as a new Sixth Form/Modern Foreign Languages block was constructed, soon to be followed by a new Maths/Music building and a Sports Centre. The school is also now an Academy. The changes have not affected the ethos of the school and Roundwood Park remains the same, continuing to educate local children in a caring and supportive way that encourages them to develop their best talents through a broad and balanced curriculum. UPDATE On 13 September 2018 Roundwood Park was proud to officially open a state of the art 3G artificial pitch on the school site. A joint venture with Harpenden Colts FC, and with a £500,000 grant from the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund, it allowed us to replace the existing grass pitch, which was unsuitable for football during the winter months. The new pitch is used by all students and players from the school as well as Harpenden Colts FC, who operate around 60 teams across eight different training venues. Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust also use the pitch to deliver sessions for female and disabled football, as well as its use for regular summer holiday camps and coach education workshops.

You have created a clear vision of teaching and learning that is based on two pillars: firstly, that teachers must ensure the tasks they set accurately meet the needs of their pupils. Secondly, that pupils understand what they need to do to improve their work”. Despite the extremely challenging times we have faced in education over the last year, the relentless commitment to ensuring that our young people thrive and achieve their best has not changed. We have a great reputation for the many opportunities for personal development our students enjoy: superb Performing Arts productions, a huge programme of clubs, sport, overseas expeditions, exchange programmes and residential “challenge” weeks. In all of these, the development of confidence, enjoyment and leadership are as important to us as high levels of performance and achievement. As a Headteacher, I am aware that the years our young people spend in secondary school are extremely precious. We are not a start or an end point, we are one part of the journey that a young person takes to become the best they can be. I believe secondary schools are in the business of opening doors.
